Pineapple Express
JOIN NOW

Strong drug use and violence, sexual references and coarse language

Directors: David Gordon Green, Judd Apatow (Producer)
Actors: Seth Rogen, James Franco, Danny Mcbride, Gary Cole, Rosie Perez, Bill Hader, Craig Robinson, Joe Lo Truglio

Lazy stoner Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) has only one reason to visit his equally lazy dealer Saul Silver (James Franco): to purchase weed, specifically, a rare new strain called Pineapple Express. But when Dale becomes the only witness to a murder by a crooked cop (Rosie Perez) and the city's most dangerous drug lord (Gary Cole), he panics and dumps his roach of Pineapple Express at the scene. Dale now has another reason to visit Saul: to find out if the weed is so rare that it can be traced back to him. And it is. As Dale and Saul run for their lives, they quickly discover that they're not suffering from weed-fueled paranoia; incredibly, the bad guys really are hot on their trail and trying to figure out the fastest way to kill them both. All aboard the Pineapple Express.

by Simon Miraudo,

Last week I was complaining about the lack of bloody action films, and having to settle on the high-NRG music video that was Wanted. Who knew that one week later, I would've seen a gory action movie that was also a great film in its own right? Who knew that one of the best action films of the year would star Seth Rogen? And who knew that there was still some gas in the Cheech and Chong-style pot-infused comedy canon? I guess that's why Pineapple Express was so brilliant. It was full of surprises. Pineapple Express is written by star Rogen and his Superbad co-scribe Evan Goldberg. Rogen plays Dale Denton, a pot-smoking process server who passes the time between hits by serving people with subpoenas. When his stash runs out, he meets up with Saul Silver (Franco), his very sweet, very lonely...

When his stash runs out, he meets up with Saul Silver (Franco), his very sweet, very lonely, and very dim drug dealer. Saul likes Dale, and shows him his latest import - Pineapple Express, a herb so rare he's the only guy in town who's got it. Of course, that's not always a good thing, especially when it comes to identifying pot-heads.

Dale decides to light-up outside the house of his latest subpoena victim, Ted Jones (Cole), the very man who sells Saul his product. Suddenly, Dale sees Ted shoot a man in the head, and then escapes (very loudly) from the crime scene. Unfortunately, he leaves behind a very big clue in the form of the Pineapple Express, sending Dale and Saul on a trip they'll never forget. Along the way they face off against some very strange hitman, an Asian drug syndicate, a low-level drug dealer (McBride), and worst of all, the parents of Dale's 18-year-old girlfriend.

Now, as I'm sure you're probably aware, Pineapple Express features some drug use. Well, a lot of drug use. Look, it's all drug use. However, Rogen, Goldberg and indie auteur David Gordon Green have made a film that is completely enjoyable for non-tokers. In fact, people even afraid of wheatgrass will still have fun with Pineapple Express. Rogen has honed his loveable loser to a tee. Amazingly, he has the entire film stolen from him by the supporting cast. That used to be his job! James Franco, who was once the worst part of the entire Spiderman franchise, completely redeems himself as the sweet-natured Saul, receiving the biggest laughs from the audience. Also brilliant was Gary Cole as the hammy villain, and Danny McBride, as Saul's backstabbing friend Red. Keep an eye out for McBride's sure-to-be-a-cult-hit The Foot Fist Way, which is still awaiting an Australian release.

Pineapple Express is a weed movie - that's for sure. But it's less Harold and Kumar and more Midnight Run in its execution. The two leads play perfectly off one another, and the action scenes should make most full-blown action films ashamed of themselves. There is a great car chase, a brilliant house fight, and a final shootout that was completely riveting. You actually feel as if the characters lives are in danger. While Wanted also had its key action scenes, I wanted to cut out everything in between. With Pineapple Express, the in-betweens are what make the film brilliant. The scene where Dale and Saul fight Red with ordinary household items is fantastic, but the tense/hilarious dialogue that precedes it makes the scene a classic. I won't go into details, but in the course of 3 minutes, they talk about a dead cat's birthday, compare suits to kimonos, and finally discuss the aerodynamic advantages of not having underarm hair.

Whether you like this film or not will depend greatly on your affection for the leads, and the signature Judd Apatow-dialogue (This is 3rd film he's produced this year, not including the upcoming Step Brothers). In fact, this entire movie pretty much felt like a grown-up Superbad with explosions. I for one am nowhere near being sick of this brand of humour. In fact, four Apatow movies a year is barely enough to satisfy my needs. Pineapple Express brings something new to the game, a daringness that is rarely seen in comedy and tear-inducing laughter that is rarely seen in action movies.

This felt like a classic, along the lines of legendary 80's buddy flicks Lethal Weapon and 48 Hrs (complete with a brand new Huey Lewis song)! After a decade of having to look towards the Rush Hour series for action and comedy, it’s nice to remember how great these films could be. What more can I say. High-ly recommended.

4.5/5

Was pretty funny. James Franco was pretty good in this. Shows he can act in different roles. Seth Rogen is pretty much the same he is in every movie he is in. I think he just plays himself. I enjoyed it. Some great funny stuff in it.

Jesus, do people really think Seth Rogan is funny? He might be a good stand up but he's hopeless as an actor. He just reads the lines. A truly lame ass movie. High point was James Franco sticking his leg through the windscreen of his car while driving. Laughed my ass off!

James Franco absolutely pulls off the ultimate weed dealer here..to anyone that has dealt with these people (obviously not Gavin B) you will know he hits the nail on the head here. Seth Rogen is funny as always. This is the ultimate stoner movie to watch when stoned...Its made for it.

Even if some of the dialogues and scenes are heaps funny, the whole story of Dale Denton being the witness of a murder and what happen next is quite boring and absurd. I wanted Dale to have that dinner with his young GF and see the story invoving from the moment when he meets the parents. Anyway very disappointing, many scenes are pure waste of time and the end is soooooooo bad.

I think the members who say this is great, hilarious, excellent, etc..... must be stoned out of their brains whilst watching it. There is no other way this could be enjoyed. And whats with the excessive violence ? I don't mind plenty of violence in movies, if its in context (Saving Private Ryan, Alien series, Terminator etc etc) but this seems like everone gets shot like 8 times, walks away laughing and talking more stoned dribble. One of the worst movies I've seen in ages.

Pineapple Express is twenty minutes of my life that I'll never get back. I am impressed by all those viewers who persisted to thirty, or even thirty-five minutes - I'm afraid we could only make it to twenty, before realising that the movie really was that crap and had no hope in hell of getting any better. There was literally nothing funny about this movie whatsoever, and I'm not immune to the odd pot-smoking related laugh. However this had nothing to laugh at, it was just morons walking around saying things like "dude, this dope really rocks man, wow...this dope is the shit" etc etc etc. That stuff is not funny. It's just lame. Did this movie actually play at the movies? It is beyond D grade. This movie is straight to DVD and even then, straight to the bargain bin. Honestly, don't watch this movie. It's a waste of time and even a 12 year old would find the movie stupid.

I don't think this is one of Seth Rogen's best, but it gets a few laughs and is easy to watch. If you want to switch the brain off on a Friday night and enjoy some stoner humour, have a look. If you want you comedy with a bit more cleverness and skill, don't bother.

A slow starter that thankfully redeems itself toward the end. The dope buddy thing's been done better by Cheech and Chong and to a lesser degree Jay and Silent Bob. With Seth Rogen it was never going to be outright bad but without the final half hour or so who knows.

The lower your expectations are, the more pleasantly surprised you may find yourself. Unfortunately I envisaged that this movie would be great... my mistake. Even Seth Rogen's laugh gets on my nerves. I can't tell the difference between the final cut of the movie and the outtakes reel because it all seems to be off-the-cuff awkward and forced humour. Definitely for pot-heads only.

I didn't like this DVD at all. After trying to watch it for over half an hour, in the hope that it was just a bad beginning, I switched it off and decided to return it the following morning unwatched. How it came to be on my list I don't know. It was the first movie I have received from my membership - I am not at all impressed with this kind of film and do not wish to receive any more of its type, thank you. There was not any warning on the packet about the trivialising of drug taking. It appeared to be utterly trite without a good story line and/or a context for the subject matter. I can't imagine why anyone would want to watch it let alone enjoy it.There are so many genuinely good films around in every genre - this was just a waste of time, in every sense for me.

I enjoyed this film. Maybe I was in the right mind set on the day, because I can see where many people would hate this film, but on the day I got a great laugh from it once it kicked into gear. Took a while to start, and I almost lost interest early, but hang in there folks, it gets quite amusing. James Franco is a stand out playing the always stoned drug dealer, and Gary Cole as the villain is brilliant. Recommended!

Cheech and Chong for the 21st century. Maybe. Didn't particularly like the originals anyway. Some people (young people) found this pretty amusing and while it might raise a smile some of the time it's pretty silly fare about a couple of dopeheads blundering around while trying to avoid the mobsters after them. Try the "The Big Lebowski" for a much better attempt at this sort of humour (by the Coen brothers).

Yes, they do go on a crazed "adventure" to try and not be killed because of what they saw/know, but its really not so much funny as crazed and it ends up being quite violent in a shocking kinda way rather than a funny way. I wouldn't recommend for impressionable teens due to the constant talk etc about weed and associated lifestyle which is almost glorified (perhaps accidentally) and the unexpected in your face violence, except that it is that age group that it was probably aimed at. Would really rate as 2.5 except cant select that, sorry cos I love Seth

I was appalled that someone in Hollywood put up the money to make this movie. It would be in the grand final as to the worst comedy ever made. I like Seth Rogen, but, if he keeps making this sort of movie, then he is finished. The plot, the acting, etc. etc. was so poorly done, that this looked like the workings of a 13 year old drama student. Not recommended, embarrassing dribble.

James Franco made the movie. Its a COMPLETLEY different role than what i'm used to him in but he was hilarious. Danny McBride and Craig Robinson also added some great comedic value. If you expect to be a really good with a great story line your going to be let down, but if your in the mood for a few good laughs definatley give it a go.

This truly lame "stoner" movie comes from the JUDD APATOW film stable and follows the exploits of a duo of weed smoking dorks who inadvertently become embroiled in a drug gangland war. The once engaging but now stupefyingly typecast SETH ROGEN is grating throughout but nowhere near as annoying as JAMES FRANCO'S horrible and totally unoriginal portrayal of a soft-centred drug dealer. It doesn't help matters that the entire cast is saddled with totally unfunny dialogue, (some scenes are obviously improvised but the actors aren't good enough to pull them off) lazy and almost non-existent plotting and the only (intended) laughs are meant to come from the slapstick fight sequences (which prove interminable) and the array of homo-erotic visual gags which are in bad taste and fall flat on their face!
