A heart-wrenching story, well-told and well-acted. Despite that, it's rather predictable and goes on for far too long. Many sequences get tedious, such as all the court scenes, the opera sing-along and the home movies. Their point is made well before they end. Also the gay relationship lacks any chemistry and is unconvincing.
I tried my best to hold back my tears but I failed... I broke down very badly when his brother broke down at the hospital... I must say I don't like movies which make me cry but this movie is an exception. Wonderfully directed.... awesome story line.... and to top it all... mind blowing actors... Tom Hanks is my favourite actor!
5 stars for teaching me a lesson in life!
Write a review...A beautiful portrait of a difficult language. Closely fulfills the era and knowledge base of the 80s and early 90s. A lesson to many and still challenging today. A must watch!!
Interesting, but to cruel and unrealistic!
Another really good Tom Hanks movie
In 1993 how did Hollywood lighten the emotion-loaded issues of homophobia, discrimination against gays and/or AIDS affected people and still show that justice was being served? Answer: By spreading the cast ethnicity, keeping the hot topics superficial, making tidy resolutions and not straying far from the politically correct. Contrast the loveless scenes between Philadelphia lawyer Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks) with his partner with those of current film, “Milk”. The scene where AIDS affected Andrew tries to convey his love of opera to his attorney Joe Miller (Denzel Washington) via a Maria Callas aria was intensely moving for me. Set against the drama of a dismal situation, Callas’s singing brought me to tears, but then I am often stirred by emotional music. Three and a half stars.
Still fantastic after all this time!! Truely one of the best moving stories only assisted by the acting of Hanks and Washington
A brilliant movie on all accounts. Superb acting, direction. One for the collection for sure!
A great movie of old. Compelling story acted out by a star studded cast. A great movie and well worth watching. Raises issues of homosexuality and AIDS and society's prejudices with concerns to these during that time.
Enthralling, well-acted, excellent movie. The court room scenes were very authentic. I also enjoyed the wonderful music on the sound track. This one really earned all it's Academy awards.
It was an exciting movie, it teaches you watch can happen when a person who's a lawyer can get AIDS.
Absolutely loved this one. Very enlightening and quite a tear jerker.
