LOW LEVEL VIOLENCE

Director: John Woo
Actors: Ben Affleck, Uma Thurman, Michael C. Hall, Colm Feore, Joe Morton, Paul Giamatti, Aaron Eckhart, Peter Friedman, Ivana Milicevic, Kathryn Morris

Adapted from a mind-bending sci-fi thriller by Philip K. Dick, the slick and riveting PAYCHECK is directed by John Woo (THE KILLER, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE II)--the king of artful gunfighting flicks--who shows off his agility here with flat-out, white-knuckle cinematic entertainment. Michael Jennings (Ben Affleck) is a high-paid engineer who works on hush-hush computer inventions and technology for shady companies. Later, his memory is wiped clean, so he has no recollection of his work. His so-called friend Rethrick (Aaron Eckhardt, the master of smarmy mean-spiritedness, as in IN THE COMPANY OF MEN) offers him enough money to retire by working on a project at Rethrick's company, Allcom. When Jennings emerges three years later, sans memory, he tries to collect his paycheck. At the bank, he's handed a manila envelope filled with cryptic items he doesn't recognize, and told he voluntarily forfeited his entire paycheck. He also has a stunning girlfriend named Dr. Rachel Porter (Uma Thurman) who is likewise ensnared in the conspiracy. Jennings must somehow piece together the clues he left for himself, and find out why everyone is out to kill him.

Action, mystery and a bit of romance rolled together. An entertaining movie with a touch of Momento, sci-fi and typical Affleck action.

As a dedicated Si Fi fan, a movie based on a Philip (the maching wont let me use his name) K D... story was a draw card. They did a good job with it, what would you give up three years of your life for - money? love? Some of the action sequences at the end were a bit over the top but a good watch and fun to boot. Trying to work out the puzzle was a mind bender.

I really enjoyed the complexity of the plot, and although some parts were a little predictable it was still very enjoyable. You rack your brain trying to solve the puzzles with the clues and I really became involved as a viewer.

I didn't expect too much from this movie because the reviews that I had heard were less than flattering. Hence I was surprised to find that I enjoyed it a lot. It has a clever plot line which has you guessing for the majority of the movie and Ben Affleck seemed to actually be acting in this movie. The inclusion of Uma Thurman helps to no end as she is very easy on the eye. All in all I was quite impressed with the whole movie and would definitely watch it again.

I like sci fi but this was just ordinary. Afflek needs to take a break as a leading man, get some roles worth playing.

Not bad. Contains a smidge of "Momento" but not as well directed, formulated or acted. The action scenes are up to Woo's usual standard, but this is not enough to make it a great action thriller.

I enjoyed it, but not as good as some other movies from Phillip K Dick. Better ones are 'Blade Runner' and 'Total Recall'. All I can think is someone involved in this movie missed PKD's point.

This movie has a fantastic storyline. I would love to have rated it higher, but John Woo had to insert mindless, unnecessary chase and fight scenes. Otherwise, highly recommended.

Through the eyes of 'The Woo' a story that keeps you interested enough, watch the deleted scenes then get back to me about the guy who picks up the watch.

Implausible; poor script gives actors to work with - one of the worst movies I have watched this year - I stuck with it to the end in the hope it would improve - it didn't!

Standard action flick that was a bit too predictable. Minority Report had a more interesting vision of one of Philip Dick's stories. John Woo needs to try some new stuff and stop relying on the "mexican stand-off" and "slow motion doves". Fine movie if you want some no-brainer sci-fi.

The usual flashes of action and chases are here. Ala the John Woo trademark. But what I was pleasantly surprised to find, is the interesting premise of the film. The flipside of knowing too much I guess. Great stuff...
