For the past 60 years, an alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) has been hanging out at a top-secret military base. For reasons unknown, the space-travelling smart-arse decides to escape the compound and hop on the first vehicle out of town - a rented RV containing Earthlings Graeme Willy (Simon Pegg) and Clive Collings (Nick Frost). Chased by federal agents and the fanatical father of a young woman that they accidentally kidnap, Graeme and Clive hatch a fumbling escape plan to return Paul to his mothership. And as two nerds struggle to help, one little green man might just take his fellow outcasts from misfits to intergalactic heroes.

Paul is a fun tribute to sci-fi films (and film geekery in general), but did it have to be so … dumb? Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the writers and stars of this road-movie-cum-science-fiction-spoof, have proven time and time again how vast their knowledge of cinema history is. Their TV show Spaced and two feature collaborations Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are repeatedly pored over by like-minded movie buffs who appreciate all the references to pictures' past. But much of that credit likely belongs to their prodigious director Edgar Wright, who seemingly burst free of the womb armed with a Super 8 camera, and VHS copies of Hard Boiled and Dawn of the Dead clutched tightly to his tiny baby chest. Wright neither co-wrote nor directed Paul. Instead, Frost stepped up to the plate to pen his first screenplay with the help of BFF Pegg. Judd Apatow-approved director Greg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland) was recruited to direct, and a whole fleet of talented actors and comics were similarly invited for the ride. Considering the pedigree of the talent involved, I expected a sophisticated satire with plenty of silly laughs. I expected one thing too many.

Graeme (Pegg) and Clive (Frost) are two comic book nerds/wannabe comic book authors with a proclivity for three breasted heroines (a nice Total Recall shout out). The English duo leave behind ol’ Blighty to attend the San Diego Comic Con (geek Mecca) and from there begin a road-trip across America to check out some extra-terrestrial landmarks (beginning at the Black Mailbox and culminating at Area 51). It only takes them a couple of days to happen across the most extra-terrestrial thing on Earth: a tiny green alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) who has escaped captivity and is intent on returning to his home planet. Graeme and Clive smuggle him onto their RV, and try to get him home, eventually aided by bible-bashing trailer park owner Ruth Buggs (Kristen Wiig), and persistently hunted by FBI agents Zoil (Jason Bateman), Haggard (Bill Hader) and O’Reilly (Joe Lo Truglio).

Movie lovers will no doubt enjoy all the references to Aliens, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Star Wars (and those are just the really obvious ones). Of course, the references themselves weren’t what made Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz funny. Those films built real characters that had no idea they existed in the vacuum of a ninety-minute film and put them in scenarios with real stakes. All those fun little shout-outs and call-backs to Night of the Living Dead and Bad Boys 2 were icing on the cake. The characters in Paul exist merely for the duration of the film; they exist to travel from location A to location B, and be in situations where similarities to other films can be made along the way. They have the depth of characters found in a Saturday Night Live sketch (recurring characters, but still). Whereas the references in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz felt organic, and subsequently hilarious, audiences here are likelier to feel only self-satisfaction for noticing them.

Pegg and Frost are undeniably charming leads, but the real star is Rogen, who does manage to find the right balance between silly comedy and earnest characterisation in Paul. He is the kind of peculiar creation that I had hoped the film would provide more of. Although fans of Rogen’s oeuvre will no doubt be surprised that he is playing a charmingly foul-mouthed pothead, seeing his words come from the impressively animated green extra-terrestrial offers a refreshing twist on his signature sense of humour. Director Mottola also deserves some praise. Although he may not be as talented a visual stylist as Wright (who is?), his low-key approach is underrated. Consider his funk-flavoured take on the teen comedy genre in Superbad, and his home-movie evoking camera in the nostalgic dramedy Adventureland. Here he gives us his best Spielberg; wide-eyed and super-shiny. Whereas Wright knows how to use his camera to tell a joke – a truly rare talent – Mottola is able to make this mostly slapdash script still seem like a well-rounded movie.

The script. Pegg and Frost are such talented comics, actors and writers. But is this really the best they could come up with? The film is still funny (and occasionally, very funny). However, outside of the stream of non-stop movie references, this feels kind of lazy. There is an unpleasant reliance on ‘gay fear’ jokes (people keep assuming that because these two guys hang out together, they’re homosexual – the horror!), and Wiig, such a talented comedienne, is wasted by being expected only to spout a series of not-so-inventive cusses for no reason at all. Sometimes there is nothing better than a good dumb laugh. But when I need that, I’ll look to Adam Sandler, not the guys I had assumed were working on a higher plane. Although Paul is still enjoyable, it proves that the duo of Pegg and Frost are indeed fallible. This film should have shot them into the stratosphere; instead, it shows them crashing down to Earth.

3/5

What we saw of the movie we enjoyed. The disc froze at four different times throughout the movie, we missed a good 20 - 25 mins, which was incredibly frustrating! The amount of swearing was a little tedious.

Same old tired rubbish from S Pegg - he really must try harder - he used to be good but I rather think that was because he was fresh - he's now stale and, quite honestly, going off.

Really Disappointed in Pegg, this was as disappointing as Run fat boy run and how to lose friends and alienate people, it was an attempt to appeal to the masses and American Families, frat boys etc, very bland generic humor, Seth Rogan is also doing the same thing. Its a very tired formula of comedians trying to make everyone laugh and losing what makes them unique and funny.

It's an English comedy, no wait, it's American, no wait, it's English........That's how I felt throughout the movie. It didn't feel as if Pegg and Frost had total say in this fairly funny movie. It's not the classic that Shaun of the Dead is and never likely to be. There were some really good lines in it and some really crummy segments. A little more thought could have made this a classic too.

I've enjoyed watching TV comedy from these 2 Brit comedians, and their US film debut as writers was fun, but as a feature length story it felt a bit under-powered, a bit too mild & easy going. Makes you appreciate the crazier more in-your-face scripts of sci-fi comedies like Men In Black, Galaxy Quest & even Mars Attacks

Whats not to like for a flick about an E.T. with SUPERNATURAL (doh!it is from space) and HEALING (possibly rids its own lung cancer from decades of chain smoking) POWERS, teaming up with SCI-FI LOSER BUDDIES (with no sexual innuendos what-so-ever between 'em) on an RV ROADTRIP (crashing into 'out-of-this-world' human characters along the way) chased by M.I.B.s (a young no-smiles Agent K and two Agent J s but minus the dance moves)??? EVERYTHING!! - makes you realise the REALITY of life after the credits and wish for a Paul of your own next X'mas. Cool, Dude...

Not screamingly funny, but thought the story quite witty & had some good one-liners, as well as a few "send ups" from other space/alien movies. Had some good guest stars in it as well, all happy to take minor rolls. Probably a three & a half

Quite silly but harmless fun. Much more believable than aliens trying to steal electricity (have you guys heard of the ionosphere?) Bumbling human sidekicks, beautiful but evil CIA agent, unlikely love story for bumbling human sidekick, exasperated alien who can't quite believe that humans are really this stupid, this movie has all the clich?s but employs them well. Well? In a likeable way may be a better statement.

Well worth renting and good for a laugh. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost do a decent job as the main characters, driving across the USA visiting UFO sites, when Paul the alien appears. From that point on, there are lots of laughs and predictable situations. I particularly liked the Christian woman who was converted to the theory of evolution by 'Paul' and from that point on, talks in profanities almost every time she opens her mouth.

I loved Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz because they were hilarious movies and did not rely on heavy handed swearing and smutty jokes to be funny. So I was really excited to see Paul because movies pairing Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have never failed to disappoint me. I don't know whether it is because Paul was made to appeal to American audiences, but it just doesn't have the same sparkle as the other Pegg/Frost movies. Way too much swearing, especially by Kristen Wiig's character, and just too many lazy and predictable jokes.

extremely funny. Interesting plot, good timing with quick wit that you have to on your game or miss them. Good belly laughs, makes a change from so called comedy where they are often overstated or explain a 'gag' to the 'nth' degree thus evaporating any humour that may or may not have been there.

Thumbs up from me!!! Thoroughly enjoyed this film, I watched it three times and picked up different references to various well watched sci-fi films each time, probably missed a lot too. I even took the time to watch the ‘extra’ info about ‘Paul’. I chose to watch the unrated version (after reading other member reviews) and figured I could always flick over to the other version if my ears (or eyes) started to bleed... careful if you’re offended by ‘colourful’ and somewhat graphic language – you may need to skip over a few scenes. Apart from that, I have to say this was one of the funniest and cleverest flicks I have watched in a while.

An american version of this duo but still really enjoyable, we LOVE Paul! Fabulously thought through story, a little slow and bland in areas but Paul saves the day :)

Fantastic movie! :) Funny & good to see a pro alien film, rather than the fear & horror. Loved it.

This was a great fun movie to watch. Very well done and enjoyable. The only complaint I had was the volume and type of swearing used. I am not a prude but I felt too much effort was place on deliberate swearing.

I was so dissapointed after the great build up this movie had. While there are definately many very good parts and funny bits, as we would expect from this team, there were also some distasteful sections and I didn't like the swearing - not funny. I think too many kids will watch this with parents assuming it's for kids which it is not. Jason Bateman was lovely, as he always is, and that final joke about his name was a good ending. Watch with caution.

Not Simon and Nick's greatest - Sean of the Dead is still out there as one of the all time greatest - but still fun with some great moments. Love the homage to films such as ET, Aliens, Close Encounters, Star Wars etc. Nick Frost just cracks me up and Seth Rogen was well chosen for the part. Also good to see a leading lady chosen in a Hollywood comedy that, while still attractive, wasn't a starlette but was middle aged (to match Simon Peggs character) and looked 'real' (I am sure most of you know what I mean). Overall a gentle comedy and a fairly straightforward storyline. Thumbs up. Looking forward to what these two guys do next.

This was one funny movie! a good laugh for the older children and a nice change from movies where the alien is meant to be the bad guy. Worth getting out

Not as funny as I thought it would be, and the swearing was a bit over the top sometimes. Still worth watching with a unique storyline, and the two geeks were good.

Very funny. I'm not a big sci-fi fan, so I probably missed many references to other films in the genre but it's funny enough to enjoy regardless. I haven't seen Pegg and Frost's other films, but I have added them to my queue on the strength of this one.

Overridden with cliches and the "swearing is funny" philosophy, this movie had its moments, especially with the many homages to other popular sci-fi movies, but ultimately it falls into the trap of being schmaltzy and totally non sensical.

Watched the unrated version - not safe for kids - and thoroughly enjoyed it. Funny. Smart. Stupid in all the right ways, with some funny kudos paid to other sci fi films, especially Aliens. Loved it!

Quite entertaining. Loved all the sci-fi references, especially how they used the Mos Eisley Cantina music from 'Star Wars'. If I was to compare this to the other Simon Pegg & Nick Frost movies I would say it was better than 'Shaun of the Dead' but not as good as 'Hot Fuzz'.

i watched the unrated version and laughed that hard at times i was in tears. If you have morals & principles strongly suggest you watch theatrical version and don't let under 18 kids view unrated version. (not that they will probably learn any new language, but all the same)........... theatrical version should be safer.Soooooooooooooo funny and as i say, rather smutty at times but always done in a tastful manner. This title rates no. 6 in my all time best movies list after the thing, apocalypse now, avatar, 2012, the happening (as a ring-in), then this. Enjoy all

I was hoping something better from Simon Pegg & Nick Frost. Although wrote by the pair & fealt this was a mash up of English & American comedy. The alien was very American and had the most lines therefore the Comedy was more American. Lots of fun & good ideas, easy entertainment, Sean of the dead & hott fuzz is a lot better.
