The success – both artistic and commercial – of Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity should have been impossible to recreate. Made on a miniscule budget of only $11,000, it eventually grossed over $190 million worldwide. As I noted in my review, it had been “one of the most enjoyable cinema-going experiences of my life”. The entire audience was entranced by the tale of Micah (Micah Sloat) and Katie (Katie Featherston), a young couple tormented by an unstoppable demonic force. Most inspiring however was Peli’s cheeky filmmaking; here was a director who knew how to expertly tease and torment his audience, armed with only a cheap camera and a couple of actors he found via Craigslist. Surely this is the definition of lightning-in-a-bottle cinema. That being said, Paranormal Activity 2 – directed ...

That being said, Paranormal Activity 2 – directed by Tod Williams and produced by Peli - is a tremendous achievement. It’s the rare horror sequel that contributes to the first film’s established mythology and has an equal amount of scares. Despite its comparatively corporate origins – this time it was made by studio Paramount Pictures on a budget of $3 million – it feels just as organic and intimate as the previous instalment. In fact, it’s not just a good horror sequel, but a good sequel full stop. Much like the original (perhaps even more so than the original), it skillfully fondles the audience, inspiring both dread and giggles of fear, ending in a flurry of orgiastic terror. Inappropriate to compare the film to sex? What can I say? I really like these films.

Part of the elation that the Paranormal Activity films inspire comes from the way in which they continually surprise and scare us. You would have thought that in this post-“lets-watch-a-man-pull-iron-rods-out-of-his-body-for-10-minutes” age that nothing could make us flinch in a cinema ever again. The first film featured a camera set up at the foot of the bed, keeping a watchful, unblinking eye over a sleeping couple. Such a simple set-up, but it helped inspire fear in audience members who regularly shared a bed with someone else (particularly those of us whose partners have a penchant for sleep talking and sudden, somewhat unnerving, night-spasms). Paranormal Activity 2 attempts to stir a similar gut reaction in the audience; this time, the primary camera focuses on a baby sleeping peacefully in his crib. Parents – prepare thyself.

Paranormal Activity 2 takes place three months before the events of the first film, and focuses on the family of Katie’s sister Kristi (Sprague Grayden), which includes her husband Daniel (Brian Boland), step-daughter Ali (Molly Ephraim), maid Martine (Vivis) and German-shepherd Abby. The film begins with new mother Kristi returning home from the hospital with her baby Hunter – and as anyone who has ever had a new bub join the family already knows, it’s a perfect excuse to pull out the video camera and make plenty of home movies. After their house is broken into and trashed, Daniel decides to install security cameras around their entire compound (another nifty device that allows us to watch over the family at all times). Of course, we know that the break-in was not caused by some unruly hooligans, but instead the demon that has plagued Kristi and Katie since they were children. As the film progresses, the demon slowly, but surely, makes itself known to the family – as well as its dastardly motive (which shan't be spoiled here).

The crafting of this film, if not impeccable, is damn impressive. It’s even more of a slow burn than the original, which must certainly make it an anomaly in the lineage of horror movie sequels. Screenwriters Michael R. Perry, Christopher Landon and Tom Pabst have developed a story that adds to the series’ mythos, and perhaps will even inform future viewings of the first film. It’s also got a wicked sense of humour, and that is the real trademark of this saga. Peli, and now Williams, allow their camera to linger on seemingly empty frames for an inordinate amount of time until we cannot stand it any longer. We look for frightening things where there are none (“oh God, did that curtain just move?”), to the point that even the most minor of hauntings (such as a light flickering) can make us shiver in fear. They're having a hell of a time with our emotions. The film eventually (inevitably) escalates into full blown horror, but by that point, it’s more than earned the right to. If the film's ending is an anti-climax, it's only because it's enticed us with the possibility of another sequel. One that, believe it or not, I would welcome.

4/5

Not as freaky as the first one, but not bad either. A lot of waiting for the big boo but didn't find it.

This prequel to the popular part 1 concentrates on the sister of the 1st lady in the film 2 months before their haunting happened. The acting is strong and the direction thu slow sets up the horror nicely. Not much in the way of violence but plenty of Jump scenes that are more noise then actural terror. The ending was as cheesy as they come. Hopefully Part 3 will improve thu part 2 was def an improvement on 1.

I thought it was slow & not scary at all, I nearly fell asleep! Maybe I'm just not that easily scared, but as a female I still think it was lame. There was just a lot of waiting for something to happen & then when it did I was like "Really? Is that it?".

Very average performances and script. They'd done it all in the first movie. Would not watch again and recommend only to those who like the idea of a prequel.

Ghosty tricks wearing a little thin this time round. Too much clutter, not as suspenseful as the first film.

Starts out as a halfway decent docu-horror movie, and is set BEFORE the original Paranormal Activity. If you have not seen the first one, don't bother even attempting to understand this one. Paranormal Activity 2 has a good story line and provides all the thrills you could need for a night at home with a sub-par horror movie. It is stock standard in every sense of the word.

Believed it was better then the first - takes awhile to get into the spook - could of been more occurences, more scare like the first one - but this felt more real.

I think Paranormal 1 should have been 2nd as the dates don't match up to the actual events. Scary stuff, don't want to go there.

After the first PA you expect this one to be scarier with a better story line. This however is not the case. Its still running on a parralelle storyline based on the first one. There might be ONE scary bit which is also possibly the only ONE action part of the movie. Highly disappointing. My kids could have watched this. Its more of an everyday life docco.

The problem with a sequel such as this is that it doesnt stray too far away from the original, hence the viewer is half expectant of any "suprises", dont get me wrong there are a few moments that will have you sitting a little more upright. Its is a worthy sequel or prequel to be more exact. I guess they could have piggy-backed on the success of the first one and completely stuffed this one up (see Blair Witch Project), but they didnt. So if you enjoyed the first one then i think you will like this one also.

A decent sequel, however a far too predictable ending. It's one of those sequels that isn't so much adding anything extra so much as just retelling the same story with different characters

I was really looking forward to this film. I'm a bit disappointed now. I know it's all fiction but it would be better if PA 2 came before PA 1. Plot wise it would make more of a float in the story. Coz in PA 1 Katie was inserted with the demon and Micah was killed but suddenly in PA 2 they are both alive and well until the very end. Plot wise it's not such a good idea. I'm sure whoever's idea it was had a brilliant back thought.

Like the first movie it is a very slow start, but I think the point of this slow movement is that when a "BANG" in the movie happens your so relaxed and don't expect it that you actually jump. The addition of the daughter is useful and paying attention to her observations will help you understand the point of this second movie. I like this ending better than the first movie, first half of the movie okay for lights on but about 20 mins into it to get full effect turn all house lights off and get right into this movie for the full effect. If you want to scare yourself a little more then have some high energy drinks during the movie so that when the movie finishes your left in bed wide awake thinking about the movie and scaring your self to sleep.

Just like the first one except no where near as good. Still worth watching, has all the same elements which made the PA1 great but it just felt like the priority was to rush it out and leech off the hype of the 1st rather than putting out a genuinely quality sequel/prequel. Hopefully the 3rd installment is better.
