Things that go bump in the night

Upon leaving the cinema at the conclusion of Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity, I noted two things. The first: I had just taken part in one of the most enjoyable cinema-going experiences of my life. The second: While the film was expertly made and intensely frightening, it was perhaps not as disturbing as many had stated. And then I went to bed. I say “went to bed” and not “went to sleep” for obvious reasons. Several weeks later, with bags under my eyes and a general sense of unease in my own bedroom, I acknowledge that Paranormal Activity is one of the most terrifying films ever made. I usually try to abstain from such hyperbole, but the lack of zzz’s speaks for itself.

The concept is simple. Micah (Micah Sloat) and Katie (Katie Featherston), a young couple “engaged to be engaged”, have recently moved in together. However, despite dating for almost three years, Katie neglected to tell her boyfriend that she has been haunted by some sort of ghostly entity since she was a little girl. Oh, and that the ghostly entity has followed her to their new digs. It hadn’t been a major problem before, but lately the haunting has become more and more frequent. Micah purchases a camera which he sets up at the foot of their bed every night to record any, ahem, paranormal activity. He thinks the footage will be cool and kind of funny, just like Candid Camera. Instead, it turns out to be creepy and truly disturbing. Just like Candid Camera.

An opening title card thanks the families of Micah Sloat and Katie Featherston, as well as the San Diego Police Department for releasing this video footage. There are no closing credits besides a single slide of copyright information. Every other moment of the film is presented from the perspective of Micah’s resilient camera, including the minutiae of their daily life and visits from a (frankly, unhelpful) psychic. The reality established by director Peli is absolving and believable, thanks primarily to the performances of Sloat and Featherston, who seem to be truly terrified throughout the film. I’m not sure what it was like on the set during filming, but based on their performances, Sloat and Featherston might well have seen the devil himself.

For this film to work, the cinematography needs to seem amateurish. After all, how good would you be at framing a scene when you’re running down the stairs trying to find your missing partner? However, don’t mistake the shaky-handy-cam for amateur filmmaking. Peli, making his feature film debut, shows off some neat tricks that directors with multi-million dollar budgets have trouble pulling off. He understands the basic building blocks of fear; bumps in the night, shadows, Ouija boards, mysterious footsteps, and even just being in the dark. This is Horror Cinema 101. However, Paranormal Activity never feels derivative. It is as if Peli has reverse-engineered everything he finds scary in movies and re-enacted them on a shoestring budget. Now they feel real and all the more terrifying.

By placing the camera in a stationary position on a tripod at the foot of the bed (which is where it stays for most of the film), Peli boxes the audience into this claustrophobic bedroom. On a big screen, you simply do not know where to look. Concentrate too long on the door at the left of the frame and you might miss out on some action on the other side of the room. Conversely, if you are hoping to look away from any spooky stuff, the only respite you can find will be the inside of your eyelids. Peli teases the audience expertly. Scenes remain silent and still; not for long, but long enough to make you sweat. The terror of anticipation and its abrupt release, particularly in the final scene, is exhilarating. I had been sitting so still in the cinema seat, that when I finally got up to leave, my head swam with endorphins. The next morning, my leg and arm muscles seized up.

The film’s closest stylistic relative is The Blair Witch Project, which I personally still find scary but has been the butt of some virulent backlash in recent years. I will say that Paranormal Activity is far scarier than The Blair Witch Project. While Blair Witch teased the audience with ambiguity, Peli’s film shows us what to be afraid of. As the couple go to bed each night, they are subjected to increasingly disturbing ghostly torment. At first they hear a rustling noise downstairs; then their bedroom door simply creaks back and forth; then ... it gets much worse. Let me just say this. When a psychic suggests you call a demonologist, you should really call a demonologist.

The story behind Paranormal Activity is almost as captivating as the film itself. It’s been parroted incessantly at this point. The film was shot over seven days in Peli’s very own home in 2006 on a budget of only $11,000. It sold to Paramount/DreamWorks for approximately $300,000 in 2008. It was finally released this year to box office receipts of $100 million plus. Whether or not Peli, Featherston or Sloat will see much of this coin is unknown, but at least they can claim to have the most widely seen audition tape in history. Each of these three talented individuals will get (or at the very least, deserve) a lot of work based on Paranormal Activity. Theirs is the scariest film of the year and certainly a cinematic experience that will remain etched in my memory. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go get some sleep.

4.5/5

I was very disappointed. I think it would have been a great ghost movie if they would have made it as a movie instead of making it seem like a real life filming. Also when you hear the entity it would have been better if they would have thrown in the same effects they used in preditor when the alien was invisible. But that is just my opinion.

Probably more could have been made of this premise -- a suburban couple decides to video-record a poltergeist in their bedroom at night -- but the anticipation and spooky happenings kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters aren't particularly likable however I still didn't want them to mess with whatever evil force was occupying their home. Low budget and not exactly a cinematic tour-de-force, but it works.

Very scary movie and I think it was based on a true story. I believe that these demons do exist as I do angels and God. I am not very religious but God and his son have their place. After watching this movie I felt very unsettled. I think it is good.

If you liked 'The Blair Witch Project' than you'll like this movie but it certainly didn't appeal to me. Scary in parts but most of it was just boring. Dragged on with lots of footsteps, loud bangs and amateur camera work. Initially turned it off after 5 mins because I couldn't get into it. Than gave it a second chance because of all the hype, shouldn't have bothered...

If you want a movie to put you to sleep, this would have to be it - bored out of my brains trying to watch this one. I guess if you could get through the first 40 minutes it might get better, but why would you bother? Definitely don't know what all the hype was about!

I think this movie suffered from over hype. I had heard so many great things about it I expected more. Overall I found it a bit boring to be honest. I think the idea was to creep up on you, and it did I suppose, but I was a bit numbed to the plight of the leads by that time so it didn't have the impact it could have if I'd felt more for them.

I watched this expecting very little given that I am not a fan of "The Blair Witch Project", a film that is easy to draw comparisons with. I really enjoyed this film. Wouldn't go as far as saying it was scary but its sure as hell creepy and had me on the edge of my seat a few times watching clever static shots waiting and looking for something to happen. If you are unsure about whether to get this one, its certainly worth a watch.

Not a fan.... nowhere NEAR as scary as i thought it was going to be.... Slow evolving plot, and like everyone says, the only jump i got was in the last 5 mins and it just from the element of surprise, not scariness! Very disappointed.... wouldnt bother...

After hearing several people rave about this film I was ready to be REALLY scared, this did not happen. The film is slow to start and get into, there are only 2 characters so there isnt a lot of need for character development or a back story, but what you do get takes twice as long as it needed too. The scary parts are few and far between, they are scary but there just isnt enough of them. Good performances and a good premise that just didn't quite meet expectations.

Even though I don't like the shaky camera scenes, it's to give you the impression that you are watching the playback, which gives the movie a more natural feel to it. It also proves that you don't need a big hollywood budget to make a good movie, if it is given atmosphere and allows you to form your own opionion, of the entity. The last quarter of the movie was the best, and boy, can that girl scream!

This movie is a sad joke. Im aware it tried to go back to the older B+W classics for scares but seriously the director should had studyed the classics at more length and focus. An annoying couple esp. the husband of which begs the viewer to knock out as I found him not only obnoixus but downright thick too move into a house and they are disturbed by someonething supernatural in the house. Horrible acting where the husband grates on the viewers nerves and she either acts angry or overacts being scared. The direction tried for restraint but forgets the Haunting made in the 60's did this kind of thing and way better as well. The film aims more for suspense then blood and gore and no doubt horror fans starved for Original ideas accpeted this garbage with open arms but I wasnt amused esp. lack of logic as in Why didnt the couple leave the house when it got dangerous? The ending was scary but downright silly and devoid of logic. Sorry fans but this didnt convert me to the film and any horror fan would be better off with the Haunting (1962).

A totally un-riveting movie. With just 3 characters in plot, (unknowns) kept me watching for perhaps a classic ending, but, NO!! just the old...She was possessed ...stabbed partner...WHY BOTHER!! . Alternate ending could have resurrected, but she kills herself instead. BIG DEAL!!. I guess I can be thankful for one thing, I can sleep in my bedroom without some nutcase poking a camera down my blankets to record something that at least risies above the rubbish presented in this movie.

I rented this with reservations as I had heard it was not worth watching, but I was very mistaken! Yes, the beginning was slow and slightly irritating, but as soon as the stuff started happing, it really started happening. Again, the activity starts out mildly, and you kind of think, "Ugh, is that all that's happening..?" but when you are watching a woman standing at the side of the bed watching her sleeping husband for almost three hours, you get pretty unsettled. The second last night was definitely my favourite scene, I actually watched the scene again when I'd finished the movie. This movie had my partner and I jumping at every noise in the middle of the night for a few nights after we watched it, and the possums on my roof sound EXACTLY like footsteps on our hardwood floors. I think it's worth the watch, I know it's slow to start, but so was the Blair Witch Project and I know that that movie scared the bejesus out of me too. (P.S. The alternative ending is not bad, I would have liked them to have used both ideas in the final scene)

Despite what some of the reviews say THIS IS FRIGHTENING I wouldn't even compare it to blaire witch, though it is in a simular vein (being shot on a home movie camera) it is actualy frightening if your able to get past the begining part Once things begin to escilate it really dose get in to your head!! Not your typical run of the mill gore and horror Hollywood style horror film, but more of a subtle get in your head and mess with it for weeks kind of thriller horror. Well worth a watch when your able to sleep during the daylight hours for a week or have a bunch of friend close at hand.

The characters were very engaging, which helps with a film shot in this manner. The different reactions of the two characters to what was going on is what made them seem believable. It's not edge-of-your-seat type thriller but it's definitely gripping. What annoyed me is I'd seen a preview (on another Quickflix DVD) which (I didn't realise at the time) included the last scene of the film, so I knew (kinda) how it was going to end. GRRRR!!!

I think in order to truly enjoy this movie you must have a good surround sound system. You'll notice that on the set up menu there is an option for DTS 5.1...use it. Visually there is nothing spectacular in this movie but sound wise its a Jumper. Its a one-time movie as it will never have the same effect on you after the first watch. The guy is a total knob, perhaps on purpose to try and extract some emotion from the viewer and to add a bit of a sub plot. I think the girl did an outstanding job conveying real fear and emotion. The fact that is has garnered mainstream attention and has drawn some serious figures at the box office should not convince you that this is a Hollywood blockbuster, its not, its a low budget indie flick that reverts back to the basics of giving you a good old fright without the need for blood and gore. The length of the film is pivotal as its doesnt outstay its welcome and the ending was as good as you could hope for given the syle in which it is shot. My recommendation, draw the curtains turn off the lights and turn it all the way up. One of the better movies ive seen this year.

A good, scary movie along the lines of Blair Witch Project. Even though you don't actually 'see' any ghosts or monsters its just the unknown of 'something there in the dark' that makes this a psychological thriller. And the ending is brilliant! Watch it all the way through and wait for the end! I watched this alone at night and I must admit I kept hearing noises when I went to bed and wondering if I was being haunted as well for a few nights! I recommend this movie for people who like psychological terror rather than blood and gore terror.

I loved the Blair Witch, but this is silly and not at all scary! It is simple all right! Very disappointing!

Totally realistic, been there done that except for footsteps in flour and murder. This movie is the only one that has truley scared me simply because of how real it is times of haunting sounds esculation, terror, etc, even the fact that psychics wont stay or even enter house to help you. Even if you are a sceptic look at this as a documentary not fiction forget Blair witch project. This is the real thing.

There may not be any real terror in this film but I spent about eighty minutes holding my breath, listening to my heart pounding. The smouldering dread that the film generates is much more intense than the climax, which after all the tensison comes as something of a relief. And a chance to finally exhale... Does for thuds in the house what Blair Witch did for twigs snapping in the forest.

BORING BORING BORING Except for 5 minutes. If you can afford 2 hours of your life for 5 minutes of fright, go ahead, otherwise give it a miss!

In the same vein as the Blair Witch Project, this movie delivers on the good, though brief and rare, chilling frights. Don't expect gore and overt horror scenes. The suspense and implied terror is definitely the winning factor in this low-budget flick.

The only real thing that scares me is ghosts and daemons, so this certainly did! I had to have a pillow near by to cover my face when I had a feeling something strange was going to happen.. and would hit the mute button when all would go quiet. I enjoyed it and would certainly recommend it to those who don't mind adventuring into the world of the supernatural. The acting was very convincing.. you would think that what you were watching was in fact very real. Even though the entire movie is captured with a hand held camera, it is much easier to watch then The Blair Witch project. Personally I think it adds to the 'realness' of the movie.

This is a good movie i think the fact its based on a true story makes it that bit scarier as you have to wonder

The male character was really annoying which made the film feel unbelievable. It was still entertaining though.

With all the hype surrounding this movie i was expecting heart stopping, jumping out of my skin thriller, sadly to say i was a little disappointed, I must admit i did jump a couple of times but the ending to the movie totally failed for me, not what i expected, i dont scare easily

Had to watch it with a light on, and a blanket to pull up to my face. Also fingers came in handy to block ears when all was quite. I think the scary thing about this is the fact that there is no end result to see in what your hearing. Lots of unexpected shocks to make you jump.

Watch if you like The Blair Witch Project. It's simple...but effective. I'm not one to scare easy, and gore doesn't get to me...but, at much as I hate to admit it, Paranormal Activity did...a little. Don't watch alone in an empty house at night like I did.

This flick seriously sucks! Knowing the 2 guys are actors and this movie wants you to believe that's really happening to them. My gosh! It's dreadful and the actors are simply not good at all. It's almost if sometimes the actors were trying hard not too laugh while saying their lines. How come this crap made millions. The Blair Witch Project at least didn't give you a clue whether it was real or not. That's not the case here. By the way, I believe if this movie has been made with $15k (looks really like it how poor it is filmed) they don't tell you how much they have spent in marketing and promoting it. You know what? Save your bucks and get something else.
