When wounded, world-weary gunslinger Johnny Gault (Tim Daly) drags himself into town, he finds himself in the middle of a heated feud between ranchers and new settlers on the verge of violence and bloodshed. A man of action above words, he is aided by a young widow settler from a highly conservative religious sect who not only welcomes him into her home but also into her heart. With her husband recently murdered and her son and brother harassed by the local sheriff, Rebecca Yodder (Naomi Watts) is a woman scorned. Desperate to defend her property from encroaching evil and regain a peaceful existence once more she recognises in Johnny a life without fear and a love without limits.
