Great movie wasn't bothered by the subtitles but would have been great in English
‘The Orphanage’ is a ghost story that is well made with good acting but a predictable script. Devotees of this genre will find it very familiar. Nevertheless Juan Antonio Bayona creates an atmosphere that is engaging.
It was okay without being great. The sub titles were not a problem.
find it hard to read the captions, did,nt realise the story was not in english
An excellent movie, even though its had subtitiles, the movie was still very enjoyable to watch.
Not bad, a good Spanish thriller with an almost predictably sentimental Del Toro twist. Great setting and mood capture, but a little clunky acting from teh lead actress. Not as good as some of his others, but still worth a watch if you like his films.
I liked this movie, I like ghost stories. I was upset that it was subtitled, I think it lost a bit of suspense because of them. I would like to see it in the English version if there is one.
Not your typical scary horror movie but creepy and riveting nonetheless. Would have been better without having to concentrate on subtitles but still an eerie story.
Don't like movies with sub title so I have rated this movie lower than the story really deserves, fortunately the story line still comes through and holds your undivided attention.
i was very dissapointed that the movie was in spanish, no where did i read that it was not in english, no mention of foreign language, subtitle etc..would love to see it BUT it must be in english
O.k. but not really scary and not really all that interesting. Has been done before and better.
A pretty clever film with an eerie theme. Subtitled but not vast amounts of dialogue so not too much reading and it did not detract from the experience.
Leaves you feeling sad but satisfied. A good movie.
Heard a lot about the movie, and was told it was quite creepy and scary - although it was a pretty alright movie in the end, it really wasn't either. No sudden jumping out of the skin or screaming. A clever movie though, with a bit of a sixth sense twist.
I love it!! Twisted story line.
Starts of as quite a routine ghost story but manages to overcome the cliches of the genre with a powerful twist at the end which creates true pathos.
We really liked this film, I didn't realise it was foriegn with subtitles when I hired it but it didnt matter it was still enjoyable. Im not into horrors and found this a "safe scare" being the wuss I am. We still jumped! It had a story line suspense and a scare here and there not just gore which is what I like, similar scare factor to "The others" the only film I have liked Kidman in
Textbook suicide, loved it.
Angel
This is well made and keeps your attention, but it's not scary. There were plenty of places where it built up to being scary, but nothing happened which is a shame because it could have been really good. I don't know why it got an MA rating, it should have been PG. I didn't expect the ending.
I thought this was a great film.
What starts out quite chilling and mysterious turns out to be quite sad and tragic in the end.
The acting is great, the music is excellently eerie, the darkness really gets to you after a while as you start to feel yourself being lost within the cleverly written story.
I gave it 4 out of 5.
I was expecting more from this, the story moved too slowly just to get to a heartbreaking twist. It could have done with some more scares and less drama. The film is good enough without being great enough.
Recommended. I am not a fan of sensational horror films with lots of special effects with blood and gore to prop it up, so this film suited me. It has an unexpected twist, is well acted and keeps you in suspense. Well worth seeing.
A cross between 'The Sixth Sense' and 'The Others' with a 'European' gentility about it - a bot long and boring though.
It wasn't as scary as i thought it was going to be but it still made me jump a couple of times, that mask is freaky!
I hired this film on the strength of the trailer which looked very, very scary; so I was slightly disappointed to find out that it was more of a mystery movie than a jump out your seat scary one. The setting was spooky and mysterious and that little kid in the mask was truely frightening but overall I was expecting more than it delivered.
I was certainly expecting too much from this movie.
The "Happy" end is certainly the worst in it. A few good, dark, frightening scenes and generally a movie beautifully filmed. Not the scariest film ever and no big surprise, a few cliches you've seen in other movies, reveal indeed what it's going to happen. Doesn't deserve more than 3 stars.
By the way, it's a spanish movie with english subtitles.
The movie rambles along with some tense scenes. But the twist at the end is one of the best I have seen, up there with 6th sense. It makes you gasp.
I also expected this to be scary - and it wasn't really - however it was a beautiful movie with some creepy moments and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Wonderful acting, lovely cast and although very grey and drab - this only added to the sadness and beauty of the film. Loved it.
Not as scary as I thought it would be.
I'd waited sometime to see this movie so i had expectations. It wasn't quite the scare i had expected but was very enjoyable with a gut wrenching twist that you feel coming but don't really expect. Very clever yet simple story, good acting and beautifully filmed. I highly rate this foreign film (yes, subtitles) for it's simplicity, ending and "non-hollywood" approach!!
This is a great movie with real shocks and creepiness. The Spanish tend to do these movies well. Its an effective atmospheric supernatural thriller. You've probably seen the same basic plot before but this movie manages to add a freshness to the theme of murder/ghosts/human connection with the supernatural. Actors are all good particularly the boy who plays Simone.
