Low level violence

Director: Joel Coen
Actors: John Goodman, George Clooney, John Turturro, Charles Durning, Holly Hunter, Tim Blake Nelson, Michael Badalucco

Disenchanted with the daily drudge of crushing rocks on a prison farm in Mississippi, the dapper, silver-tongued Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney) busts loose. Except he's still shackled to his two chain-mates from the chain gang - bad-tempered Pete (John Turturro) and sweet, dimwitted Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson). With nothing to lose and buried loot to regain - before it's lost forever in a flood - the three embark on the adventure of a lifetime in this hilarious offbeat road picture. Populated with strange characters, including a blind prophet, sexy sirens and a one-eyed Bible salesman (John Goodman), it's an odyssey filled with chases, close calls, near misses and betrayal that will leave you laughing at every outrageous and surprising twist and turn.

(This movie is now also available in a blue ray version from Quickflix.) Quirky story with gentle references to "Odyssey" (sirens, one-eyed "Cyclops", etc.) My tip is to set the English captions early on in order to understand the American southern dialects a bit better... Not for everybody because is so quirky and idiosyncratic. (Did not watch it till the end, sorry, maybe this movie was a bit too clever for me...?))

Bowed to pressure to watch another Coen brothers film. I'm so pleased that I did. What a fabulous film!! It is funny, engaging, great acting, and the sound track absolutely adds to the story . The inclusion of the KKK scene was a sobering moment that, for a few seconds, alienated me. The Odyssey epic is well revisited in this film.

Great movie, quite funny, good acting... LOVE THE MUSIC! 3 members of a chaingang escape on the promise of sharing 1.2million in stolen loot.... Hilarious situations, extreme stereotypes, and fun on the general institutions of the 'depression-times': religion, kkk and others. Yep a very good movie!

It was good that the movie had captions since the southern accents were very authentic and most Aussies would have had difficulty understanding what they were saying. Nice to see George acting in a great character role rather than his usual "cool, calm and collected".

Every word matters. Incredible use of language. Soundtrack brilliant! "Loved me up" really means something now! This was a wonderful thing to discover on a rainy Saturday afternoon. First thing I have seen which I felt gave Clooney the status others afford him. Riviting and entertaining. The Coen's again.

A grand caper of a film, with George Clooney aping Cary Grant for all he's worth. Quirky as only the Coen brothers can be, this story lurches from one preposterous premise to the next and manages to take the audience along for the ride. Charles Durning is a treat in a small role.

***** Five stars for the first hour and ***1/2 for the rest. It just fell away for me. But I think, still, that it is a 4 star plus classic. The cinematography is stunning. Clooney, Turturro and, especially Tim Blake Nelson are absolutely superb. The music perfectly fits the movie. Love it!!!

To suggest that this film is "different" would be an understatement. I actually sat through this twice because I couldn't work out why I liked it. OK it was funny in parts but very unfunny in others. George Clooney had some great dialogue to deliver but he is not a great comedic actor by any stretch of the imagination. I think it would only appeal to people with a certain weird sense of humour. Perhaps I was just laughing on the inside and didn't notice. I think everyone watch this dvd at least once.

Another triumph from the Cohen brothers. Truly unique, great characters and a superb soundtrack. George Clooney revels in his role as the eloquent yet verbose Ulysses, and his dim-witted sidekickcs are perfectly cast.

George Clooney and the supporting cast lift this movie out of the ordinary run of the mill "prison escapes". The "Soggy Bottom Boys" are hilarious and their music foot tapping. Another Coel masterpiece.

I must be the only person who didnt get this movie. I thought it was a load of rubbish, I struggled through the first hour then just couldn't punish myself any more and gave up. Judging by everyone else's reviews the last bit of the movie must have been simply fantastic. Hmmmmm.

The Coen brothers are at their peak with this hilarious take on Homers Odyssey. But it would have been as nothing without the stupendous soundtrack. I've never been a fan of bluegrass and country but this bunch of extraordinarily appropriate songs took my breath away. Bought the soundtrack, know it off by heart. Simply a stunner.
