I'm a fan of the Coen Brothers but this movie did little for me. Apart from the unusual murder weapon there was nothing special about this movie. The villain murders a lot of people and then walks off. End of story.
How this could be anyone's "favourite movie" is beyond me. Maybe symptomatic of the decadent age we live in, fired up in the youth by the R-rated violent computer games and nurtured by the everyday killings hyped up by any and every media . A good movie, however, well made, well acted and definitely worth a viewing.
Brutal, is all comes to mind
Brilliant! I'm not normally into shoot-em-ups but this film is deep, engrossing and downright scary.
(This movie is also available in a blue ray version.) Lots of blood, gun violence, corpses, wounds, etc. Relentless chasing/escaping and killing. Not my cup of tea. Takes place in Texas and in Mexico. Southern American accents are a challenge for me to understand, perhaps could be watched with English subtitles on, for that reason. The arid landscapes complement the harsh story. Surround sound system option available. Reminds me of "Simple Blood simple" by the same two directors.
One of the bests movies ever, great characters both big and small with twists and turns along the way. This is one of our favourite movies and we watch it again and again
this movie is amazing, i watched it when i was only like 15 and thought it was absolutely fantastic, the story, acting was great and the whole movie was just awesome...
This is a slow burner of a movie. A really slow burner. But if you can enjoy a film like that every now and then it's a stunning film.
A fairly average book to movie translation. But worth 3 stars if you haven't read the original.
Full on, dark and compelling -brilliant without your usual Hollywood schmalz.
One of the worst movies ever seen. Hated every second of it!
In the Coen tradition of Fargo, a chilling story that rings true.
Sinister tale of a Vietnam vet who stumbles on a stash of cash from a drug deal. The movie revolves around his attempt to secure the loot and evade the bad guy (who has an interesting way to unlock doors). There is suspense and violence as other characters get caught up in the plot. A moral narrrative is supplied by the small town sheriff who has difficulty coping. All characters are expertly portrayed and the pace of the film never relents. A gripping tense drama.
Slow paced but by no means boring. A chilling and gripping piece of movie viewing with a superb performance by Javier Bardem. I was so taken in by the story i didnt realize it was set in the 80's until one of my friends told me. One of the Coen Brothers finest!!!
Utterly flawless. There is not one part of this movie that can be faulted. At its heart it's a very dark comedy fused with extreme violence, which is not surprising given it's a Coen Brothers movie. Those of us who work in the movie industry fantasize about either writing or making a movie of this calibre. I don't know how anyone could ''fall asleep'' during this movie - it's incredibly fast-paced and has a gripping sense of rhythm. Dialogue and character development are all perfect - anyone who wants to understand character development should study the screenplay. I also can't understand how anyone could be disappointed with the ending. The ending was perfectly resolved - Anton Chigur fulfills his promise, as prophesised by Carson Wells (Woody Harrelson), with the Sheriff entering a state of permanent bewilderment. This represents the unrelenting violence of the drug barons and the powerlessness of the police to do anything about it. Remember, this movie was based on the Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name, which dealt with the brave new world ushered in by the drug trade. Prophetic, given the drug violence Mexico has seen over the last decade. This was hands down the best movie of the noughties decade.
Pretty harsh but brilliantly acted and directed. Worth it's Oscar
I was so bored I fell asleep. I expected a better movie and was so disappointed :(
A brilliant, gripping film with a disappointing ending. I really loved the characters, the yarn, the cinematography. Great acting. But such an anticlimax for me.
Good Movie for two thirds. The ending was so disappointing that i felt robbed. Tommy Lee Jones, Woody Harrelson... they were not necessary as they didn't have anything to do with anything! All they did was talk and didn't affect one thing. So in the end it was just meh!
This was a rediculous story, so I didn't enjoy the movie. Nothing in it at all to get your teeth into.
Somewhat bizarre movie with no clear rhyme or reason and no clear direction or conclusion ...
The bad guy is notorious and memorable, but not much else stands out in this one..
Tommy Lee Jones is wasted in it!
Brilliant character piece featuring some truly amazing dialogue! Highly recommended movie!
What Started out as a good movie failed badly with it's ending. The whole story line just stops and the credits roll.
If you like suspense watch this one the ending will certainly deliver
I was so disappointed with the ending. Expected more from Tommy Lee Jones
Great movie. Really enjoyed it.
Started off OK, but by the time it got to the end I thought someone must have played a nasty trick and put a different DVD in the player. PATHETIC!!
The worst movie my husband and I have EVER seen!! Boring as, confusing, dull, with no ending. Two hours of our lives lost forever. Don't bother with this rubbish.
If you like a "black"movie this is it! A little hard to follow but worth every second of watching.
This movie was very interesting. I wouldn't say I liked it exactly, but it was certainly very different to the norm out there. It was very thought provoking. Both my husband and I were surprised when the credits rolled, but after thinking a bit about it, it was a good yet unpredictable ending. I was talking to someone about it and they explained that it was all from the perspective of the old cop (Lee Jones) and he was the main character, not the other 2 main characters, so that was why it had seemed a bit unusual, but it now makes more sense.
This seems to be a love it or hate it movie. I loved it, one of the best. Will be disappointing to those who require every detail spelled out for them, but the fact that it required a bit of thought is part of what makes it great.
I really enjoyed this film but then I like Cohen Brothers films. One of those films that leaves you thinking afterwards - I will watch it again. Clever little twists with the plot along the way.
A very twisty, engrossing story, it never went where you thought it was going, and ended abruptly, kind of leaving the viewer hanging, wanting more. Very enjoyable
good movie, the bad guy was evil. liked the good guy, did not think he would get killed. Did not understand the ending .. can anyone enlighten me on this. Is there a hidden meaning???? Did he get the money ... help
Was a disjointed movie with all these missing details - In my opinion is overrated
Very over rated. The ending left me feeling ripped off.
Was really into this movie, the bad guy is awesome, then the main character Llewelyn gets killed and it goes pear shaped. Didn't really understand the last 30mins.
I wouldn't bother. Very tempted to turn it off, but kept waiting for SOMETHING to happen. Husband enjoyed it more than me, but still not much.
good movie to start with but keeps on cutting out
Don't watch it unless you want to be bored and feel bad at the end as no real pleasure in watching this movie...
good adaptation of a GREAT book. Well cast and engrossing.
I liked this. Well done for a Canadian movie
Overall not a bad flick. The ending was too abrupt for my tastes.
Just a bit overrated. Great character journey, though it suffers from a very weak ending with no real satisfaction, be it positive or negative.
It's hard to believe that the same person who plays the suave, smooth talking Spaniard in 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona', (Javier Barden) plays such an evil, demented person in this movie. This is one of those movies that makes you keep watching it by beating you around the head; tense, violent and relentless in its spiral into compete desolation and awfulness. The setting adds to the tension also, bleak and unforgiving.
There is no music at all in the movie which in my mind makes it more horrific because you have to feel what is happening, and not be guided by the atmoshphere of the score.
Liked the movie and was gripped the whole way through but I didn't like the ending. I wasn't looking for the fairytale ending but all the same I didn't like it. I wanted to know more, maybe that was the idea....
no country for old men was surprisingly non-hollywood in its storyline and ending - a nice change from the predictably obvious stuff aimed at the lowest common denominator.
This movie kept me on the edge of my seat. One real crazy bastard in it. Expected something different from the ending though.
Gritty 80's-era story that puts a bolt-gun through the typical Hollywood movie formula. If you want a happy ending or don't like violence, choose another film.
Well acted. Keeps you on the edge of your seats. The "bad guy" is scary. Quite violent in parts. There are some holes in the story but this doesn't detract.
Disturbing and interesting character portrayal with an interesting plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Very good film. My only objection is that the "demise" of the "hero" was ambiguous. The clues were not dwelled on enough, and a bit more expression from Tommy Lee Jones when he saw the last clue would have made things clearer.
Good film, true to its aim. But you have to watch for at least three short clues to a probable ending that is just a possibility but not shown.
This movie is brilliant. Everything that the Coen brothers touch is gold. (Intolerable Cruelty being the exception to the rule..) Everyone that doesn't like this movie because of the ending is a moron. Everyone that complains about the 'violence' is a wuss. Yeah, i said it..
If you enjoy graphic violence, more bodies than you can count, and a story line which can be easily summarised on the back of a match box, then look no further.
average movie, was expecting more with the oscar mentions. had to rewatch the ending, thought missed part of it... it ended, but still felt unfinished.
After such a sustained level of suspense and violence, the end was a let down, almost as though they'd run out of ideas on how to make a satisfying conclusion.
Great movie! Like that it doesn't just hand everything to you on a silver plater.
One of the best films i've seen.
Top movie kept us on the edge of our seats but very disappointed with ending!!!!
enjoyable but slightly slow moving
strange bu kept me watching. didn't pick the end which is a good thing. enjoyed this film
This movie was really good but really, really disturbing! Much like the changeling I forced myself to watch it through to the end even though it was far more violent and creepy than the films I usually go for. If it hadn't been so creepily well done I would have turned it off. If you don't mind a bit of the grissly stuff then you will probably love this movie - not at all what I was expecting!
An interesting film but like a lot of Cohen brothers stuff it leaves you a little hollow at the end. Not entirely sure it warranted all the oscars it got.
Hard to keep up the plot on this one but if your after mindless movies that dont need a plot than this one is great.
An excellent story, with realistic twists and turns and surprises. This is a movie that will stay in your mind and will be worth a second viewing. Watch closely and follow the story to get the full effect. There is a lot of shooting and gallons of blood but the violence has been handled so well it doesn't come across as a violent movie. The photography is wonderful.
I did not enjoy the violence at all!
Very violent Texan movie which starts with violence
GOOD MOVIE really enjoyed it
It is a catalogue of murders by a villain so unrealistically successful that had he been a hero instead, it would have become a film mainly for school boys. But It is a film made for a sick society, that accordingly showers it with honours.
Excellent movie. dark and disturbing but compelling to watch!
I was very disappointed with this flick. Best Oscar?!? Tommy Lee Jones was mumbling, incoherent. The plot was difficult to follow in parts, much of it was left open to deduction/inference/debate, like what happened to the money, I mean, it was obvious that the psycho took it, I guess I like the facts to be laid down, not leave stuff open to interpretation. I didn't find the tension unbearably great like other have said, yes, the psycho was very scary and did hold us present in most of his scenes. I was very disappointed with Jones in the movie. This dream stuff of his, it was like this morality thing thrown in on top of the movie, plus his own self doubts in life. It was most unsatisfactory when he examined the crime scene in the 2nd last scene and 'ignored' psycho in the corner. Why exactly? I am at a loss to understand this. And Woody Harrelson? WTF!? His role was so strange, sort of slotted in to boost the cast list? There were good moments in the movie though - some classicly black Coen bros humour. Overall though, very underwhelming for me.
I did not really know what this was about and do not like violence or blood and guts but quite enjoyed it.
Hated it. Story was painstakingly slow, story lines did not link with each other and had the worst ending ever. Those who gave this 5 stars (and there are a few of you) need professional help.
Great movie; very Cohen brothers ending. Enjoy!
If stylised criminals are your thing, this is your dark movie. With a feeling of "Kill Bill' in my mind, this film rolls of as easy, but when you don't let your self fall for the night scenes and the played situations, it's an enjoyable film.
I'm sure this movie was technically well done, but it appears pointless and unnecessarily violent. What was it all about?
Excellent enthralling but bleak movie
Full of suspense and plenty of action but the ending leaves you hanging otherwise a good movie
Not my cup of tea at all. Pretty violent and one of those films that doesn't seem to go anywhere. I like a bit of closure.
I enjoyed this movie, great action and story, weird ending though
Darkly dramatic and very engrossing but like all Coen brothers products, an acquired taste. Tommy Lee Jones is terrific as usual with some very funny lines delivered dead-pan. Listen hard or you'll miss them. Javier Bardem plays it intense and very very scary. There's also a nice cameo from Woody Harrelson.
Well acted, poor ending. I don't know if the director spent any time in the editing room at the end. Otherwise good though.
I liked this film but it was possibly not my type of genre - too masculine. Had a Mad Max type feel to it.
What should have been a classic movie, great actors, story, and settings ruined by a confusing and very protracted ending, leaving me and my spouse going "what ?". Would not recommend apart from the super acting of Javier Bardem, what a great choice of a relatively unknown actor
I enjoyed this movie but I thought the ending was stupid and left viewers wondering what had happened. The soundtrack was very annoying, to be able to hear the dialogue you had to turn the volume up really high most of the time. It was a good story with fine acting.
Bit disappointed after rave reviews elsewhere. Worth watching? Mmmmmm
just brilliant. what a movie. does this guy ever die ? he shows that hes human, but only just. and it just shows how dumb a cowboy can be. why the hell did he hang around ?? just to get his head blown off ?? so well done, 5 stars
For three quarters of the movie is well scripted - then the last quarter they must have run out of money because they rushed the ending and the story didn't make sense!
It was a pretty good story with good acting but something unsettling about it. Perhaps it was because the setting was believable and unsensational? It was also cool to see Woody Harrelson as a bad guy.
This movie is brilliant. The script is exceptionally tight and well written combined. Great acting performances by the leading men. One of the best movies I've seen to date. I highly recommend this movie.
Definately not your usual hollywood crap, I would recommend this to anyone. I mistakenly took my 10 year old son to see this in the cinema, even he loved it and said it was the best movie he had ever seen.
One of the best movies I've seen tjhis year. An exercise in subtilty in all regards and stronger than most films for it. Was particuly impressed by it's lack of music and letting the sound effects take centre stage.
Ah the Coen Brothers...
From classic cult movies in their early days such as Blood Simple, all the way through to Oh Brother Where Art Though? and Fargo, and even silly stuff like Burn After Reading.
Now, No Country For Old Men.
Grim, dark, menacing, funny(in a black way of course), well spun out, and fantastic directing and acting, as usual.
I loved it, my husband thought it was too bleak, depressing, hopeless.
If you like interesting characters, a puzzling storyline, a chase of unusual style, this is a film for you.
For the most part this movie work extremely well in building edge of the seat tension but, I felt, fell down in the last quarter by focusing more on the Tommy Lee Jones character and trying to introduce supernatural themes. Fantastic performance by Javier Bardem. I'll give a 4 stars based on the rest.
I think in Shannon Harvey's word's - best villain depicted since Hannibal Lector, I just don't know why Tommy Jones even had to be in the film. I think his part was pathethic. But the villain BARDEM, the best, he made the movie.
Fantastic film - but it's a Coen brothers film so you'd expect it to be.
Still trying to work out the end though.
Great movie. The acting, the locations, everything about this movie makes it a great movie. It is a long and slow movie, but not so that you get bored. It just keeps you hooked to the very end.
Brilliant movie, deserved all awards won, great acting, great cast, Very gory, very clever, I love the Coen Bros movies, They all seem to have a similar underlying theme to them, but are all different in their ways. Highly enjoyable, brilliant special effects, ( I am a big fan of the effects!!) Not for the faint hearted i think!?, Javier is so good at acting evil, his character is truly that
A beautiful, slow moving piece that remains with you long after you watch it, No Country For Old Men is quite a memorable film that isn't worth renting...
...you should own it.
Brilliant Movie. Best Movie of 2007
Loved it - tense, frightening. Brilliant performances by all. Javier Bardem's Oscar was well-deserved, he has a tangible presence on screen. Tommy Lee Jones has the ability to convey so much, in so few words. Josh Brolin was a surprise package and Woody Harrelson has that special ability to grab your attention no matter what he's doing.
A rather dark, tense "pursuit" movie. Deadpan, but at the same time, intense. This is good, but it took me a couple of viewings to fully appreciate it and I am dedicated Coen bros fan. I was surprised to find that this is an extremely accurate rendition of the book that it is based upon because it is just SO Coen bros. Obviously the book struck a nerve with the bros. There are so many echoes in this from their previous films. I actually think that it did so well because it surprised people who were unfamiliar with the Coens. Because for me, I've seen alot of before in their earlier films- strong and quirky characterisations- the sheriff is so similar to Fargo, the villain so similar to Raising Arizona, the lead rather dead pan as they've done before and the great characters a feature of all their films- just appreciate, for example, the character that is portrayed in the trailer park manageress despite her few seconds of film. Brilliant, but if you're a Coen bros fan, you knew that already. I rate it a 4 star, but if you haven't appreciated Coen bros before, then this is not to be missed.
The best bad guy ever! I've had horrible nightmares this guy was chasing me...truly a great performance from Javier.
Yet another overrated and meaningless film that wows audiences with violence and shock. In regards to the deep and meaningful ending cobbled up for those who are intellectual... what a load of wally!
Who would have thought this film was a period piece (1980) rather than a modern take on the heist and going on the run movie.
There are some chilling scenes and Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones and Garrett Dillahunt (who steals the show) are all amazing.
Don't get this if you've fallen for the Oscar hype. Get it because you're a fan of gritty drama films like those of Sam Peckinpah, Eastwood or Walter Hill.
very gorie to watch but not bad story line
This is one of the best movies of all time and deservedly won best picture in 2007. The ending is brilliant... absolutely brilliant. People who do not like the ending do not know what this movie is about.
AWESOME!! great film. would've been fantastic on the big screen.
Great violence both implied and depicted; and like the dialogue it is sometimes understated and at other times in your face. The sheriff thinks the whole world has changed when in fact it is more likely he has.
The artistic merit and film-making skill in the movie is obvious from the start. Unfortunately for this viewer, despite carefully watching and listening from beginning to end, the story didn’t make any sense. The southern drawl of the characters didn’t help in that regard. A big surprise on watching the Special Features on the DVD is that one of the actors who sounded so authentic (and was very clear) is actually Scottish. The Special Features are in fact much more interesting than the movie, after you’ve seen it of course.
Brilliant movie, until the end. That is why I have deducted 2 stars. Great acting, great plot.I suspect the Coen brothers were smoking the product of the movie when they wrote the ending.
Too violent for me...could only watch it for 20 minutes
Excellent - must see movie! Gripping to the end, deep and meaningful and great acting. Was worried about 'violence' warning but, it's not gory or gratuitous. Brilliant!
It definitiely doesn't leave much tot he imagination. I found the movie dragged and the ending was ordinary. A bit disappointing for me.
A high paced, quirky thriller, not without its violent interludes. The film has its surprises, not necessarily within the plot. Fans of the Coen brothers should expect nothing less from these brilliant directors. Javier Bardem is excellent.
For once this film totally lives up to the hype.
I watched this about 3 times
it was that good.Stunning performance from all the actors not just from Javier. This has to be one of the best bad guys of all time.
I just didnt get the ending although the story was gripping all the way through.
Jones, Bardem and Brolin all delivered fine performances. All up a good, but at the same time disturbing film to watch.
I would have given this movie a 5 star until the end of it! It was really really good throughout the whole movie but the ending must have to be one of the worse ive ever seen.
This won't be everyone's cup of tea. So why the 5 stars?. Well, this is a superbly crafted film from what must have been a great novel. Texas of the eighties shows all the signs that it had already become the America we know today, to the bewilderment of its local sherrif. The Texan form of English does not sit well on Australian ears, so for a better understanding of the film I suggest the subtitles. The dialogue is accurate to my mind, showing just how eloquent ordinary Americans can be in their use of the language.
For those who like violence, there's plenty of it dispensed by a chilling psychopath, the deeper meaning of the film is something else and worth pondering.
Best movie I've seen for awhiile. Good story, excellent portrayals of the characters. Loved it - watched it twice and have recommended it to anybody who will listen.
Tommy Lee Jones is excellent in this Coen Brothers Movie as the world-weary
leathery old sheriff, as dry and ornery as the Texas dust. Although we have seen Tommy in numerous other roles, he is this role. He is not just a buy in because of his star quality. Also good are the bit characters also blessed with the Texan drawl. The lady at the motel and the guy hoter keeper. Another star of this movie is the beautifull sweeping Texas backdrop. Its wholesome naturalness is in stark contrast to the bizarre games people play. It is beyond good and evil.
The lure of drugs and easy money have drained all values from the human landscape. Like death the madman cometh with his compressed air sting. Unstoppable! Life at this primitive level is absurd in the existential sense, it has no point, no meaning.
Coen brothers, your movies have style in spades, keep 'em coming.
Loved it all the way thru but the ending ???
Amazing movie, The Coen Brothers at their finest. Javier Bardem plays creepy and psychotic very well. If you like him in this movie check out the "Sea Inside' and 'Before Night Falls' (as long as you don't mind non-english speaking movies).
I am going against most of the reviews here but my husband and I didn't like this movie at all found it quite slow and really hated the ending they could have done a much better one but I have been told you either love or hate it so I would say that people should watch and make their own minds up
Moss, out antelope-hunting in the parched lands of the Rio Grande, comes across half-a-dozen bullet-ridden vehicles with as many bodies lying around. One had a case full of bank notes worth about $2 million beside him. A drug deal gone wrong. He makes the long drive back to his trailer home with the cash. That night when he returns to the carnage with a jerry can of gasoline, an SUV turns up with the guys in it blazing away, and from there on he's on the run. He makes it back to his trailer, packs a bag and sets out for El Paso on the Mexican border with the cash. Chigurth, a psychopathic killer working for the drug boss that set up the deal, starts following Moss as he moves south. Not far behind is the sheriff, Bell, and his deputy, knowing that drugs are involved. The ghoulish Javier Bardem, who gives a very convincing performance as the psychopath and who has a novel way of disposing of anyone likely to be a nuisance to him, is the main character who creates the suspense. But that evaporates as final closure to the drama approaches with the sheriff, Tommy Lee Jones launching into a long monologue of homespun philosophy irrelevant to the plot, and the last scene posing a question which is not resolved. A real let-down.
i expected a lot from this movie considering the awards it got and nominated for. but once i watched it i found it to be a strange and unusual movie. hard to follow the story line and a weird ending. good actors but just a strange story.
Outstanding. Just goes to show that you can make a superb movie using a very simple formula with great acting performances. History will judge the Cohens to be the finest directors of our time. Great story-telling and I certainly wasn't disappointed with the poignant ending. The title says it all really.
Enjoyed this movie all the way through but was left wondering what it was all about at the end. Strange ending.
Slow and coldly violent. Moves at the pace of a Texan drawl. Excellent.
Whilst this was an interesting movie the purpose of the ending was unclear.
Worth a watch
Not sure what to make of this movie and whether it is worth the Oscars hype. A bit slow moving at times, although Bardem's acting is a standout. Strange ending to a strange story.
So simple and so well done that you have to wonder why more films can't be this good.
Great movie, quite enjoyable as there were fine performances from the main actors.
Although the technical aspects and acting are great it really doesn’t go anywhere, if you like movies with a meaning skip this one.
I didn't watch the whole film. A bit violent and gruesome for me. Probably my fault for not researching it first!
Good movie, with Coen Brothers touch.
Beautiful and disturbing. I wouldn't suggest it for anyone who has an aversion to violence in movies. The acting was brilliant and the story was thought provoking but I wish it had ended differently.
Back to the way the Coens used to make movies. See this for some high octane movie making with an edge and a brain.
Tarantino wishes he could make movies this good.
Great movie, characters were very captivating. Thought they could have come up with a better ending.
A fine film, outstanding for its characterisation (which includes the Texas landscape), its performances from all of the players, but none more so than that of Tommy Lee Jones. It is his bewilderment at what Texas had become, and his despair of ever being able to do his sherrif's work again, that is the real story of this remarkable Cohen brothers' film.
Superb. I have heard people are saying the ending is a bit disappointing, but if you want formula and predictability, stay away from Cohen films. Characters are all amazing and the dialogue the highlight for me.
The movie features the perfect mix thrill and excitement that would be expected out of a movie in this genre. The Coen brothers' direction of the particularly intense chase scenes between Chigurh and Moss are masterful, evoking emotions of suspense to the highest level and pushing the audience to the very edge of their seats. This is achieved by very careful editing and sound direction that perfectly recreates the tense atmosphere whenever a particular scene is being played out.
Great Movie, keeps you wondering all the way.The ending has to be one of the best ever.
Plenty of blood and guts here..the hero is a villain and the villain is superb..what would u do if u found 2 million big ones??? I would definetly NOT return to the scene of the crime!!!8/10..my wife gave it a 9/10
Excellent - Though I don't like the ending, though I don't like the pace, for some reason I don't know why I like this movie.
Not what I expected, a few unanswered questions. Strange ending.
Brilliant. best movie i saw in 2007....looking forward to seeing on DVD.
What a suprise this movie was and even more so is it has just won best picture at the Oscars. Is it worth the hype? Yes it is. Its intrigue, fast paced, having said that it is a slow movie but you will never be bored and the cast make this picture a pleasure to watch. Great shots, great acting, great story. Its great all round really!
Jarvier Bardem has just won the Oscar for best supporting actor for his portrayal of an unspeakably evil man in this, the best Coen Brothers movie to date. The movie has also won Best Picture and the Coen Brothers took Best Director, all of which is well deserved. This is an enormously tense thriller. Its impossible to look away. The cinematography is beautiful, the suspense builds to almost unbearable peaks, the dialogue is utterly convincing, the characters fascinating. Whilst undeniably bleak, from a film-making perspective, there is very little not to like. It’s a powerful film – you cannot fail to be moved by it.
