FREQUENT VIOLENCE, OCCASIONAL COARSE LANGUAGE, HORROR

Director: Clive Barker
Actors: Craig Sheffer, Charles Haid, David Cronenberg, Anne Bobby

Boone (Craig Sheffer) may be a troubled young man, but his troubles are just beginning. Set up as the fall guy in a string of slasher murders, he decides he'll hide by crossing the threshold that separates us from them and sneak into the forbidden subterranean realm of Midian. Boone will live among the monsters.

Hellraiser creator Clive Barker writes (adopting his novel Cabal) and directs this vivid leap into horror that asks: in the battle of man vs. monster, who's really the monster? The answer supplies flesh-crawling suspense, sudden fear, a colourful Danny Elfman score and a creepy array of shape-shifting beings. They are the nightbreed denizens of a world beyond death, beyond the imagination, perhaps beyond anything you've seen.

If you're a Clive Barker fan, you'll find something to appreciate in this sloppy adaptation of his awesome novella. The plot is filled with holes and the characters are under developed, but apparently Barker was shafted by his production company and forced to edit out significant chunks of the film to make it palatable for Hollywood - perhaps if he hadn't have done that this would be a better film than it is.

Clive Barker seems to have a one track mind. Pain equals pleasure, demons, monsters, sex etc etc. Nightbreed is no exception, its definitely weird and to be honest, not really that good. Some of the makeup effects are great for the different Monsters, the score is fantastic (im a huge Danny Elfman fan), the acting is OK. The story however is a little confusing, the background of the monsters isn't really explained in detail as to how they came about. I thought it was slightly entertaining, but i wouldn't watch it again. I gave it 1/5 stars.

Not,"HellRaiser", but not bad. Clive Barker just has a gift to be able to show people about hell through all different ways and thoughts, visually. Rather brilliant. This is not too hard core if you can't stomache,(eg,"HellRaiser),etc.

Still enjoyable years later. I loved this as a kid and although it's a little outdated (the acting/script) compared to the movies these days - it's still awesome and with a timeless plot. Amazing effects and creatures...worth a look alone!

Better than a poke in the eye with a burnt stick but not as good as the book. Isn't that always the case? With the notable exception of Hellraiser, Clive Barkers stuff can lose something in the translation.
