It hardly needs to be said when reviewing an adaptation of a novel, but for traditions sake, “the book is better than the movie”. There, it’s out of the way early. Are we really surprised when we hear this? Be it Jane Eyre or Twilight, fans will attest that their film equivalents are slightly (or drastically) further down on the quality scale. So, if even Twihards admit that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart fail to capture the nuance of Stephanie Meyer’s tomes, what luck do Kazuo Ishiguro fans (let’s call them Ishigurus) have when watching his masterpiece Never Let Me Go translated for the screen? (Side note: I’m sure that people who read Twilight are fully capable of critiquing literature, but I also understand how obsession can blind even the harshest critic. It’s the only excuse I have for my frequent endorsement of Nicolas Cage films.)

Never Let Me Go begins in 1978, at a peculiar boarding school named Hailsham. The children are frequently reminded they are special. And not in the way that “all children of God” are special; they are supposedly really special. So special, they are required to take regular physical examinations, ingest a daily dose of medicine and abstain from any practices, like smoking, that may be harmful to their body. Outsiders are weirded out by the kids, even though they are all perfectly polite and seem totally normal. The children aren’t even fully aware of the true nature of their existence, until one of the school’s guardians, Miss Lucy (Sally Hawkins), reveals all. I’m not going to discuss those revelations here though. Although it probably doesn’t count as a “spoiler” – considering how early in the film it’s disclosed – I think the way Ishiguro, and here, screenwriter Alex Garland and director Mark Romanek, dribble out information about this alternate universe is far too masterful to clumsily spill in a plot synopsis.

We follow three kids – Kathy H. (Carey Mulligan), Ruth (Keira Knightley) and Tommy (Andrew Garfield) – who eventually graduate from Hailsham, move into equally peculiar farming houses known as The Cottages, and slowly attempt to blend into the real world. The trio is engaged in a love triangle of sorts, although it’s not quite the kind you might be thinking of. Although the girls are ostensibly rivals for the oblivious Tommy’s affection, as is revealed in the film’s final reel, it is not who they are in love with that really matters – it is that they can love.

Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go is only six years old, but has already wedged its way into the pantheon of great literature. Part love story, part sci-fi parable; it’s a gorgeous, devastating dissection of what it means to be human, and to have a soul. But the book doesn’t exactly welcome readers; told from the detached, almost-icy POV of Kathy H., we are kept at an arm’s length from the novel’s overarching tragedy. For good reason. When the inevitable fates of Kathy, Ruth and Tommy are revealed, you understand that only someone distanced from their own life and experiences – coldly logical and pessimistic – could muster the energy to even get out of bed in the morning. It’s what makes the novel so powerful. But, how do you possibly bring that to the screen?

Mark Romanek finds a way (most of the time), and although his film adaptation does indeed fall short of the brilliance of the source material (and will likely distance viewers even more than the book ever did), it manages to convey the novel’s most important themes, and most affecting moments. It also helps that the seemingly infinitely talented Carey Mulligan is so good here. She’s perfectly adept at playing both wise and naïve, often at the same time. This is one of those adaptations that requires voiceover narration – so evocative are Kathy’s descriptions of the events at Hailsham and abroad – and thankfully Mulligan remembers that narrating is still acting. God, I hope she does an audiobook version of this soon. Knightley and Garfield are probably excellent too, but frankly, it was impossible to tear my eyes away from Mulligan, so I can’t say for sure.

Romanek and Garland could have taken two major missteps when adapting Ishiguro’s heartbreaking fable. Firstly, they could have been frightened off by Kathy’s superficially detached narration, and turned the tragic tale into a more obvious, dare I say it, "Hollywood" bastardation. Or, they could have gone the other way; fully embraced the detachment – not realising that it is merely a coping mechanism, and not truly indicative of the depth and meaning of Kathy’s experiences – and produced an unengaging, unemotional and ultimately creepy version of this story. They avoids both pitfalls. The film is breathtaking to behold, and Romanek is clearly a stickler for detail. But it's not a perfect adaptation. Although it’s not a short movie, it does occasionally feel rushed, particularly the first act at Hailsham. We need to spend more time with these three kids, and eventually adults; we need to see them become friends, fall in love, goof around, have fun, cry, share experiences. There is time for that in a book, but not in a two hour movie, I’m afraid. But even in the film’s briskness, there is meaning to be found. Here is a story about the brevity of life, and how quickly it can all come to an end - or, in the vernacular of the film, complete. Before we know it, we’re saying goodbye. It feels like we just met.

4/5

I don't know why I selected this movie or even why I sat through it. I suppose I was hoping that eventually society would see the wrong in what was happening here and do something to stop it. It is a disturbing movie and whether or not the parts were played well I wish I hadn't seen it because it will bother me for some time to come.

Deeply sad and thought provoking movie. The advances we make in medical science are astounding, watching a movie like this one will make you consider the possible consequences of pushing the limits, and make you ask "Where should we draw the line?". Be warned.....if you are a sensitive, intelligent viewer, the after effects will stay with you for some time.

A dispassionate tale based a grim premise, I loved this film for its style and the thought provoking theme. Could not sleep for hours thinking about it. A brilliant film that will not be everybody's cup of tea. Not recommended to those who are seeking a romantic love story .

Mulligan is the strength of this story. Whilst watching, I found this profoundly sad but the feeling faded the next day. The child actors who were Kathy & Tommy were also very good. Knightly just does her usual pouting. Only watch if you're in a very serious mood.

Very slow-moving film but with good acting and an interesting premise. There were several things I didn't really understand about the plot and had to go and look up afterwards. I think I would've enjoyed this more if I'd already read the book and knew exactly what was going on. The movie never really explains some things.

Think I will have to read the book. I've never watched a film and not been quite sure how I felt about it. Interesting concept but sci-fi romance found it weird. Thought provoking and morbid, in 'real' life organ donation is such a loving wonderful thing and this film made it in to a sadistic thing.

Set in the arcadian English countryside, we meet the docile pupils of what looks like a well-run boarding school. They are not normal children, but created or cloned people, whose parents were society's losers and riff raff. They are raised for an awful purpose - to donate their body parts as required. they live on the sidelines of 'real' society and await thieir fate. I wish they had rebelled, but they didn't. A sad and moving film.

I am surprised by the negative reviews - I was totally gripped by this film. I haven't read the book so the subject was a complete surprise. I thought it was such an interesting dystopian vision, especially to see an alternative past rather than the future (a bit like reading '1984' nowadays). The different eras were well created - understated rather than cheesy references to the 1970s and 1980s. The script and acting were utterly convincing. Never Let Me Go is one of the best films I've seen in ages and I've been recommending it to my friends in the days since I watched it.

Unfortunately, this movie was nowhere near as strong as the book on which it was based. Much of the back story was not revealed – I watched the film with someone who'd not read the book, and found myself having to explain the significance of certain events. This should not be necessary. A film's narrative should stand on its own merits.

This was a very different film, not one for the boyfriend/husband. It didn't have too many highs and lows, it just plateaued the entire time. Now I have watched it I don't wish to watch it ever again, unlike other favourites that you can watch over and over. I wouldn't recommend it to friends but it makes you think.

Never Let Me Go was relatively faithful to the book but the medium did not allow the subtlety and detail of the book to come through. Nevertheless it was a good effort and was very thought provoking, although it had lost the element of suprise in my case. And yes, as some have said, it could be called depressing...but at the same time it was heroic on the part of the leads/donor clones. It played on my mind for some time that such a callous society could possibly ever exist... but you never know!

I missed this at the cinema, but really glad to have caught on DVD. They did a superb job adapting the book, the main theme of plot came across as brutal treatment of children. The casting of the children to match their older counterparts was great work also.

There seems to me to be a lot of hate on this board in reviewing this terrific blend of sci-fi and romance. For me though, the whole film is just beautiful, heart-breaking and challenging. All 3 leadds were excellent in a bold discussion on the meaning of life and death. It does not answer every question you might have but in this instance, I felt that was actually a real strength as we are plunged into a dystopian universe. 4 stars.

To make a movie as good as this from a novel so difficult to film shows real skill. Three incredible performances (Andrew Garfield a standout) bind together a heartbreaking tale which pulls you towards its inevitable conclusion with a churning stomach and a heavy heart. It's brave to give away the "twist" half an hour in, but it works. To say any more would be to give too much away, but in a world of 3D and Transformers, this ought to remind people that having a great script, a wonderful story, and a collection of good performances is really all you need.

What can I say hmm!! definitely different. There is no indication in the highlights that this storyline will go in the direction that it does, or I would never have chosen it.It dragged out a little too long & we almost turned it off as it seemed like it was going nowhere. Then you found out some sicko had discovered a way of solving our shortage of human organ donations & you look at the movie in quite a different light. We sat it out but it left us a little dazed at the end.

If you wanna see a movie about cloning and bioethics you're better off watching 'The Island', 'GATTACA' or reading 'My Sister's Keeper'. The film displayed the bioethics of cloning well but not really good as a movie because it was very slow and dreery and just very monochromatic and grey throughout the whole screenplay but I think that was intentional. Needed some drama to engage the audience as I was tempted to turn it off because it was making me fall asleep.

An unusual film that I think attempted to bring science fiction based ideas into a modern day setting. I think the concept was to show how love is soul based and that it can transcend adversity however the story idea was a little too obscure I think to make this an easy connection.

If you're a fan of science fiction films, you probably missed 'Never Let Me Go' when it ran at the cinema. After all, it doesn't look like a science fiction film from the poster and title. It's like a low budget, art house version of the Ewan McGregor 2005 science fiction film 'The Island.' This film is set in a world where life expectancy has increased to one hundred years. The first half is set in a private school. (Spoiler alert.) One day, the children at the school learn they will never have a career - they are clones. Their purpose in life is to provide spare organs for other people, and they will die at a young age. The second half focuses on a small group of students in adulthood, as they wait for their organs to be removed. Don't expect a Hollywood ending, where the clones rebel and win their freedom. Not a film to watch if you want an uplifting story of the human spirit, more a film to watch on a cold, rainy day - maybe with a box of tissues handy.
