I enjoyed this seemingly sweet and simple story which was actually layered and touching on many levels. Improbable in parts but Gerard D is reliably great and plays these guileless characters so well. I am learning to enjoy the subtitles as a key to another world. There are so many great French movies we have to get over it or miss out.

Very enjoyable movie, Gerard is a great actor and this is a lovely story, just love some of the french movies. Unfortunately once again, the movie seized up and skipped towards the end :/

Yes, delightful enough movie although couldn't get the main character's girlfriend. You have to be joking, right? Maybe all of us older blokes better make the move to France! But then again it was only a movie and thus make believe. Wonder if the old folk’s home at the end was make believe or based on French reality also? How old is Depardieu? Reminded me a bit of Jack Nicholson in one of his recent films where he was having a fling with women in their 20's, it just didn't work.

A lovely touching story about the bond between friendships.. One never knows where real friendship starts and where it will come from. The actress who plays Margueritte is wonderful. Why not let's strive to bring out the best in each other not the worst. maybe we could all take a leaf out of this book.

It took a while for the films story to unfold. Couldn't believe how much weight G D had put on. Loved his sensitive portrayal of the unloved child. His mother was despicable. Such a beautiful endingand a celebration of the human spirit.

Nice film. Only Gerard Depardieu probably could have taken the part that he took and do it so well. It's actually about how to rise out a dysfunctional upbringing.

Maybe this is a chick flick (hubby - who I always thought was a SNAG, dozed off and went to bed, leaving we 3 girls riveted). Depardieu is not sexy, but a crab (hard shell, soft inside), and though his relationship with the older woman is more fully formed than the one with his girlfriend, his response to the news on the bus brought me to tears. Unlike the reviewers who thought the poem over the closing titles was trite, I loved it so much I paused the movie to write it down line by line.
