ADULT THEMES

Director: Marc Forster
Actors: Peter Boyle, Billy Bob Thornton, Halle Berry, Heath Ledger, Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs

In the tradition of films like DEAD MAN WALKING and the SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION comes this hard-hitting drama of prison guard Hank Grotowski (Billy Bob Thornton from THE MAN WHO WASN’T THERE, A SIMPLE PLAN) and the life-changing relationship he has with the wife of a man he executed. Australia’s Heath Ledger (from A KNIGHT’S TALE, THE PATRIOT) plays the role of Hank’s son who is desperate to escape his family infested with the bigoted hatred of Hank’s father played by Peter Boyle (from TV’s EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND, WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING). Graphic, explicit and uncompromising, MONSTER’S BALL was nominated for 2 Academy Awards®* and won for Best Actress in a Leading Role – Halle Berry (from SWORDFISH, X-MEN).

Good performances from the three actors, interesting and at times quite emotionally raw film

Good movie. Not slow at all, just interesting. Very bare bones though, and definitely wouldn't appeal to your average TV "sit-com" type viewer. Both of the main characters had zero friends and relations, apart from Hank's father. Even Hank's son had no-one at his funeral. If you can accept this lack of extraneous relationships and human interaction then you can enjoy the two main characters. Don't know how this movie got an R rating. You don't have much more than you get on your average M movie these days.

I think I don't have much room for depressing movies anymore, couldn't finish watching it, possibly it ended well, if you like slow plot lines then it's ok.

Halle Berry's best film. Billy Bob Thornton under plays his role as a perfect foil for Berry's angst. The subject is unusual - the emotions and problems encountered by three generations of the excecution squad on death row. Heath Ledger as the youngest, gives a great performance.

See, USA can make some great movies if they try. Don't compare it to Shawshank Redemption or Dead man Walking, it's a stand alone great movie in it's own right. Simmering, intelligent and intense it will keep you thinking about the various themes for some times afterwards. Sometimes small is best, and that short racist sentence delivered by Peter Boyle to Halle Berry was like a bolt of lightning. It sort of explained what the whole movie represented.

I did not think this movie was going to be that good, but I thought it was excellent. Billy Bob is "hot" as was the scene with Halle Berry, but it fitted in with the story. A story of "rednecks" that you could well understand, the 3 members of the family doing the same job and the fathers expecting more. But after BBT left his employment, he started to understand a lot more things in his life. A must-see.

I saw this when it first came out and it didn't have the same impact that it did the first time. Pretty hardcore sex scene, but it really is a part of the story. Note the difference between Billy-Bob having sex with a prostitute and Halle Berry...

This is a truly challenging film that really shows the human toll when the state murders one of its own citizens. Although Heath Ledger is only in the film for a short time he certainly leaves a lasting impact. Halle Berry's portrayal of a woman in pain needing to 'feel good' is so raw I almost felt like I was intruding! Highly recommended

Enjoyed this movie. It's hard to say much without giving the story away, but Billy Bob's character was interesting to watch develop. Can't fault any of the acting, and I did not find the sex scenes gratuitous at all, as they were an important part of the story. Loved the ending; poignant.

Great movie showing the "rednecks" and the fight to overcome rascism as well. Well acted especially by Berry and Thornton. A little slow in parts.

Really good film and fine acting from Thornton, Berry & Boyle. Ledger's role wasn't long enough to really comment on his performance. Felt really sorry for the extremely fat kid being that big so young. A good story and worth a look.

Interesting but not riveting. Halley Berry sure shows off a different side and makes you wonder whether this launched her to bigger roles.

Disturbing in parts, this film set in a "red-neck" US southern state delivers a powerful depiction of a father and son's relationship which is based purely on their shared racial predjudice. Great work by Billie Bob Thorton and Heath Ledger. I felt Halle Berry was a bit overrated and definitely didn't need the Academy Award for her portrayal as a single mother and Billie Bob's love interest. Really thought the father out of "Everybody Loves Raymond" played the part of the ignorant biggot particularly well. As for the fat kid - well his life is no Beer & Skittles - in the film as well as in real life. Worth watching but maybe not with your Mum and Dad. Maybe don't watch this one with your Mum and dad.
