Welcome to the happiest wedding of the year… This splashy, noisy audience pleaser from Mira Nair (Salaam Bombay!) is a chaotic comedy of manners.
As the romantic monsoon rains loom, the extended Verma family reunites from around the globe, for a last-minute arranged marriage in New Delhi.
Monsoon Wedding traces five intersecting stories, each navigating different aspects of love as they cross boundaries of class, continent and morality. The film celebrates a contemporary India never before seen on screen.
The family's hopes, anxieties and long-guarded secrets merge amid frantic wedding preparations, and are juxtaposed with arresting montages of real-life New Delhi. The relentless summer heat mirrors the story's building intensity, as the city anticipates the cooling torrent of the monsoons. And when the rain comes, the cathartic downpour brings romance, revelation and liberation.

Good story but I found it needed more concentration than what I had when relaxing with a movie. It was not until close to the end that I worked out the relationship between different people.

For those that have been to India this will bring back some memories. Good film with a few threads woven through. Touch of upstairs / downstairs.

Quite enjoyable in a chaotic, meandering sort of way. A glimpse of India an added bonus.

This makes our traditional hen's and buck's nights look embarrassingly primitive. Loud, colourful and frantic... a bit like India.

For me, this movie was a cultural delight. It leaves you warm and fuzzy after taking you to places you couldn't have expected to be. It sneaks up on you with insights on people and families and gives you what we all want - a happy ending :-) Great in the feel-good stakes.

Terrible. A mixture of Punjabi muttered with English. Several themes all proceeding simultaneously but with no cohesion. Not worth using up one of your rentals on.

More of a chick flick than a male movie. I found the language difficult to follow. It seemed a mixture of Hindi and English. I can imagine Indian people would like it. It was okay, but not wonderful. Colourful, some happy times, some sad times. Okay.

surprising film, not easily characterised, but very very good. At first I thought I had to turn the subtitles on when there was no english in the first scene, then i realised that i could follow this movie as the actors moved between languages, the relationships and the story were clear.

One of the the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. The actors were so natural and the emotion so real in a family under all the tensions of a wedding they can really ill afford.Iandian culture is so complex and this film captured the various layers beautifully. A lesson in life movie.

A really appealing and enjoyable film. Fantastic colour, great characters and music. Some more serious sub-plots sit comfortably in what is basically a really fun film.

Once you get your ears adjusted to the Indian mixed english language of the movie, this is a very entertaining watch! Gives a good insight to the closely knitted Indian culture and the value of family ties, served with a good pinch of light-hearted comedy...
