Long live the new king. But who will it be? The answer will come through the mystical and powerful manipulations of fate emanating from Avalon.

The Mists of Avalon, from Marion Zimmer Bradley's best seller, retells the Arthurian legend from the perspective of the women who shaped events with spiritual powers. Angelica Huston plays high priestess Viviane, the Lady of the Lake determined to perpetuate the ways of Avalon. Julianna Margulies is Morgaine, her chosen successor. Joan Allen portrays Morgause, fiercely driven to shape the royal lineage to her own end. Out of the lives of these three and others - and out of the mists - will come a nation's destiny.

If you enjoyed Ever After and the Lord Of The Rings trilogy you will love this! Everything from the scenery to the costume details is fantastic. Add it to your list at least once,I highly doubt you will be disappointed :)

I enjoyed this portrayal of the book, although the reading of the book was more understandable spellbinding and exciting!

Fine characters, but falls a little flat. Spend an evening with it when you feel like fantasy and can't find anything of true quality but don't want to end up with something like 'Merlin's Apprentice *Side Show Bob hit by a rake shudder*'.

Another Arthurian adventure but this time from the female viewpoint. Morgan La Fay - usually portrayed as an evil sorceress was a goodie and the narrator of this long tale. An enjoyable medieval fantasy story.

Based on the legend of King Arthur, The Mist of Avalon does not give the usual romantic version but a much more desolate vision of the rise and fall of King Arthur. So many juxtapositions are weaved into this tale, Pagan Magic and Christianity, Brother and Sister, Sister and Sister, Husband and Wife, Marriage and Druid Law, King and country. The film works well in telling a different version and has many points of intrigue yet it does show so much hardship suffered by all, that you do yearn for some happiness along the way. It is almost akin to a Shakespearean play yet Shakespeare did learn to add light parts to even his heaviest plays. The acting is great and in part saves this film from being relegated to the bottom of the pile, as does the magnificent cinematography. I do not believe the adaptation of the book is weak yet more that the direction was not strong.

Excrutiating Womans Weekly version of the Arthurian legend. The acting was incredibly wooden and the mangling of the story unnecessary and uninteresting. For a decent go at it, get Excalibur instead.

As a fantasy, The Mists of Avalon lacks the fantastic, as a war film it lacks compelling battle scenes, and as a romance, it lacks, er, romance.

I was REALLY looking forward to watching this movie after such a great book. In itself it was good enough but it doesn't compare to the book so I was somewhat disapointed. however, it is difficult to cram a 1000page book into an almost 3 hour movie

What a disappointment - one never expects the film the same as the book - different media require different approaches. But, changes were made that made it all seem pretty silly and overinflated even melodramatic. All the complexity of the characters was lost - what a pity!

Movie remakes of books never do the book justice but pleasant enough. Good performances.
