The Mission: Impossible franchise is one of the most uneven in cinematic history, with the quality wildly fluctuating from one instalment to the next. The Brian De Palma-directed opener was promising, if deeply flawed, and it was followed by John Woo's disastrous M:I2. It took J.J. Abrams to inject some fun and personality into the franchise, but even his Mission: Impossible 3 is merely solid. Animation hero Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Ratatouille) has been recruited to helm the fourth entry, Ghost Protocol, and he delivers the first really good flick of the saga. Not great. Still, it's really good. When we first reunite with superspy Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), he's holed up in a Moscow prison.

His colleagues Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) and Jane Carter (Paula Patton) come to the rescue, breaking him out in spectacular - and, as per IMF regulations, highly complicated - fashion. Their first mission as a team, having chosen to accept it, is to break into the Kremlin and recover some highly classified documents. Unluckily for them - though not coincidentally - the Kremlin is bombed by terrorists at the very same time, and the Russian fingers of blame are pointed squarely at the trio. The American government has no choice but to initiate 'Ghost Protocol' (hey, that's the title!), meaning the entire Impossible Missions Force is officially disowned by the United States, yet Ethan, Benji and Jane remain secretly tasked with finding the responsible parties. Along the way they pick up a mysterious IMF analyst named Brandt (Jeremy Renner), and uncover a plot that could bring about a worldwide nuclear winter.

So, all pretty standard as far as Mission: Impossible movies go. However, Bird and screenwriters Andre Nemec and Josh Applebaum add some subtle twists to the previously established conventions, and make a world of difference in the process. Most notably: the team dynamic here is richer than it's ever been. Benji, Jane and Brandt feel like valuable associates instead of Ethan Hunt's personal accessories, and they make a foursome that I'd like to spend time with in future sequels. It helps that Pegg, Patton and Renner are such wonderful screen presences (and, although I'm in the minority these days, I still find Cruise a particularly charming and compelling performer). There is also a sense of humour and self-awareness that was sorely absent from the earlier pictures; though it occasionally feels like run-off from Bird's ingenious superhero satire The Incredibles, it's hard to deny that a little bit of Pixar goes a long way.

Bird proves himself rather adept at directing action sequences in his first live-action foray. There's a spectacular foot-chase through a sandstorm that is more coherent than any non-sand-blown sequence in Transformers 1-3. The final showdown at a futuristic parking garage is surprisingly brutal (Cruise's face is shattered on numerous occasions throughout the flick, which should please detractors, as well as fans of Vanilla Sky), and it also has shades of another Pixar film, Monster's Inc. (you'll get it when you see it). The pièce de résistance, however, is the moment in which Cruise, and the camera, climbs the 160-storey-high Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Hunt's reasons for having to break through the window and stalk the outside of the world's tallest building are fairly contrived - the script often has to work hard to squeeze in action set-pieces - but the execution is electrifying. It's the best moment of the picture, and perhaps the entire series. Hopefully, any further M:I instalments use Ghost Protocol as a template, and not the one with all the doves.

4/5

Really enjoyed this action spy/adventure/thriller. I bit like the James Bond serries of movies, it features lots of action and more than a share of unbelievable stunts, however with lots less comedy although there are a few good lines thrown in. Tom Cruise as usual acted the part very well. Like him or loathe him, I believe he is a quality actor. Jeremy Remmer popped up again and I like Paula Patton in the Carter role. Finished in such a way that it seems MI5 in inevitable.

Watched it with my husband. We have watched all the other movies in the series and it didn't disappoint. You really have to ignore how unbelievable it is and just sit back and enjoy the action.

Neither a big fan of Cruise nor of the MI series however once you know that it will be quite/very unrealistic, it's still a good Cruise full packed action flick needed in a boring afternoon. A question comes to mind though... Where do they find the time despite the short time they have to save the planet, to always dress perfectly for each occasion. Would that be great if life was like in a Hollywood movie.

Not bad, not bad at all as far as a Tom Cruise movie goes. I have always been a fan of the series and it was good to see a sensible storyline with some neat twists that were not too Brain-bending this time. This is much better than the last couple for M.I. files that have been produced. It was worth my time watching this.

Urrrghhh. Apart from some really fabulous action sequences, there were more than a few scenes where I banged my head against the wall screaming why, why? Like, why not just shoot the guy?? Too many clumsy, implausible scenes that seemed to pad out a flimsy and mistimed action film. Overuse of the admittedly funny Simon Pegg and Tom Cruise is only remarkable that his body is so good and he's almost 50. No more Tom I beg you...

Thought it went too long and should have focused more on the younger actors than 2 old dudes rolling around pretending to fight.

I used to watch the old TV series when I was kid and even then I knew that "Impossible" was the catch word. I have to say that when I watch a movie, I am not expecting it to be real and I watch them for the entertainment, however this plot was so totally impossible it was over the top. I don't like Tom Cruise and I think he has only made one real good movie, this certainly was not one of his high career moment, his acting was very poor even for him. Overall a very poor effort.

I watched this with my fiance and it is the first and last mission impossible movie I will watch. It was awkward and clunky and the humour wasnt timed all that well like they just thought they would throw it in there at the last minute. Poor acting and the way tom cruise runs???? that was the only funny part about the movie!

I saw this at the cinema. Action all the way and what I expected from the Mission Impossible series. Tom Cruise does an OK job as the lead role but Simon Pegg is downright annoying and badly cast. However, the stunts and nonstop action overcome this shortcoming. If you have a phobia about heights (I do) be prepared for the scenes outside the Hotel (yep, outside) at somewhere between the 110th and 130th floors of the highest building in the world. Plenty of high tech computer equipment used throughout by the cast and the car chase through a duststorm, using the iphone for navigation is particularly memorable. Also, for car fans, check out the futuristic car Cruise's character drives near the end of the movie (a BMW concept car)? For all action fans, this is well worth watching, in my opinion.

A very good action movie with a clear plot and sensible editing (ie not chopped up so much that you can't tell what's happening). A bit of comedy from Simon Pegg's character was welcome, but the lines were pretty lame.

Another Tom Cruise vanity piece. Watch Tom run (he runs a lot), watch Tom do some really dangerous stunts, which of course he does himself (yeah, right!), watch Tom get angry (shows he's deep and meaningful), watch Tom kiss the girl (proves he's still got it!) and watch Tom go all sloppy at the end (shows what a romantic he is). Lots of close ups of Tom's face and lots of Tom kicking butt, but that's about it. Note to self - stop watching movies starring Tom Cruise!

I had my doubts about Brad Bird as choice of director (he directed the overhyped and overrated cartoon The Incredibles), but my confidence in him was won over by about the halfway mark. Here he's crafted a fun, loud, silly and decidedly more playful entry in the MI series where Tom Cruise isn't necessarily always top dog, thanks to a great cast of team mates where everyone is given room to shine (something that was sorely lacking in no. 3). Probably the best Mission since the underrated first entry in the series.

I really enjoyed this one, its a non-stop film ride, no time for character development amongst the fights & explosions but somehow its better that most of the genre, the bit in Dubai have me the willies, when Cruise goes 'outside' the Burj Dubai I could not watch, Simon Pegg is a bit wasted though always watchable. Great opening titles too, you don't get many these days

Coming from the perspective of a person who hasn't seen the first three films yet, this was quite a surprising movie. The screenplay is intelligent, the acting and direction are both fantastic and it keeps you anticipating the outcomes from beginning till end. This is what I think of when it comes to great action movies.
