Great movie. I really enjoyed it. Must get a copy for my own movie collection. Paris in the 1920's seemed so glamourous and romantic.
Great fun with time shifting and literature. Keanu is fantastic as Papa. Classic Woody Allen.
We thoroughly enjoyed this non-thinker of a film set in Paris. If you're in the mood for something light and cute, this is it. Otherwise, steer clear. It's just a bit of fun!
One of my fantasies is to be able to step into another time, look around, talk to the people and experience that time as it was so this film really appealed to me. I wish we were really able to do that. Interesting characters too and it revived my interest in surrealist art.- Man Ray - very interesting. A good way to spend an hour and a half.
Hired to watch Rachel and Owen reunite after 'Wedding Crasher' - though he seemed out of depth...even trying too hard with this character.
Absolutely goregous photography of Paris!
Seemed slow moving in parts....though Rachel is always great; it seems the director did her a diservice by casting her in this C-grade role. Was always waiting for her to deliver more.
Give it up Woody!
Quite enjoyable, although lightweight. Slightly unusual storyline, and loved the intro pictures of Paris
easy to watch and a light lesson on literature and arts history a pleasant film
Pitifully tame... it's about time Woody Allen retired... he's just 'trading on his name' instead of putting out incisive comedy... we haven't had anything decent from him in ages - the stars are for Paris!
A slight and ultimately empty and trivial film. A pity, because there is potential in the scenes from the 20so, however it is also trite and predictable.
A lovely little movie, best if you have some familiarity with mid 20th century writers and artists. Basically a coming of age, coming to understand yourself movie, but done with great affection and gentleness, and very beautiful to look at, being Paris and all!
The usual pretentious drivel we have come to expect from Woody Allen as he has aged. Very pretty with some nice pics of Paris (always a gorgeous city) but overall rubbish & a downright silly story - going back to the 1920s? Puleeze! I only ordered it to see Kathy Bates, always a great & versatile actress, but her part was small, she must have needed the money to pay some bills. I felt no empathy with the characters, the finance was a whining woman & the "hero" a dill & a loser. Whatever they were on, I don't want any. Don't bother.
Average movie. Paris looks nice
Only for Woody Allen lovers.
very woody allen - interesting concept - well acted
I began watching this film without having seen any previews or knowing anything about the plot and was very quickly taken in by the beauty of it. The story was simple but well cast and well directed. It still had me wondering which way he would decide to go at the end. His present friends and family were annoying, but they were meant to be.
Pleasant to watch.
An engaged couple’s romantic trip to Paris turns into a back in time fantasy for the male partner. Another whimsical offering from Woody Allen that treads familiar territory and in the end is quite forgettable.
The typical American movie of today has lost, perhaps even doesn't care, what this movie has to offer. Like many Woody Allen movies it is the inner dialogue of people trying to find happiness, could it be a belief in some normality, and what they have to discover for themselves. These films will survive, while 99% of American movies will be seen as commercial nonsense of their day.
What a clever movie. I enjoyed this from start to finish and from start to finish again. Easy watching, with an intelligent twist that made for warm humorous entertainment. Who needs an excessive budget when there is a clever plot? Thought provoking and insightful observations of human nature. What makes us feel unique is often what makes us all the same.
The movie was good but the qualities were quite bad.
Absolute rubbish. Poke yourself in the eye with a sharp stick, it's less painful.
Interesting premise, but found it a bit boring after a while
The WORST movie I have seen in ages... BORING and baseless, Couldn't even finish half movie.
Love Owen Wilson in this as it suited his persona and I feel a lot of movies he does don't really gel with him. Woody Allen really sets the mood at the beginning of the feeling of Paris and how it would make you want to go there. We really enjoyed this. A nice movie.
A friend suggested I see this film because he knew that I would like it and I did. Part comedy, part whimsy but really interesting, particually if one is at all interested in the artists that are featured in the storyline. The last time I liked Wilson in a role was in "Zoolander" and I haven't really liked his movies much since, but this one suited his lay-back temperament very well. I particularly found Gil's relationship to Inez very interesting, for it was through the story that Gil discovers what he might really want from a relationship and Woody Allen is able to illuminate all sorts of things in his breezy directing style. Liked it very much.
A very unusual role from Owen Wilson. Quite bored after about half an hour & stopped watching half way through.
The first five minutes made me want to go back to Paris. The next hour and twenty five minutes was pretentious twaddle. Too "try-hard" clever by half.
This was a weak and very uninteresting movie. The only saving grace was the backdrop of Paris. It can hardly be called a "comedy".
How can you not fall in love with Paris under that light?
Beautifully scripted...
My partner and I are no Woody Allen fans - but we laughed out loud a few times watching this gentle, lighthearted comedy. Not for the 'cultural philistines' as there are heaps of references to artists and painters from the early to mid 20th century.
Excellent, funny, romantic, uplifting, film.Really put me in a good mood. Should be more of it. Films are meant to entertain & this certainly does.
A family travel to the French capital for business. The party includes a young engaged couple who are forced to confront their differing views of a perfect life. Very enjoyable fantasy. Owen Wilson is marrying into the family from hell. Woody Allen comes up with a script and story to save this poor soul
Vastly over-rated despite advertising much.
Poor choice of leading actor and after viewing- left feeling - "is that it ?"
this movie was very average with an ending leaving you saying, that's it!
Worst movie I've seen for ages.
Loved this movie with a really different storyline. Could easily watch it again - especially the lovely scenery of Paris.
Oh Paris, in the sun or the rain, you are lovely. This is one of the few movies I actually bothered to see at a cinema and i'm glad I did. And i'm glad I watched it again because it is just a lovely, funny, romantic movie. Rose coloured glasses, are they really such a bad thing?
Great movie. Fun, romantic and a bit silly. Now I want to go back to Paris
Fantastic! The PERFECT film.
A movie with great scenery and a unique storyline. True that we are always seeking and looking for better.
Charming, inventive, intelligent and fun. Woody Allen.
Brilliant!!! Loved it from the opening schene(s) of Paris right through to the very end. My type of movie, no violence, swearing or nudity. Allen at his very best. Not screamingly funny by any means, but there were some really great one-liners there that I has real "laugh out loud" reactions to. Don't miss this one!!
Awesome movie and not a swearword either. finally a movie where no one threw up. 10/10
Brilliant
Must see!
Escapism @ its utter best!
Did not enjoy this at all. Boring.
excellent....I want to go to Paris
Perseverence with he first 10-15' will be richly rewarded. This film is a breath of fresh air among modern films. A knowledge and familiarity with Paris helps, particularly the great "art" movement of the 1900s, as you will meet many of the now famous characters. The main character could be Woody Allan himself, with all the attendant anguish and doubts, but he gets our sympathy. How did they ever get engaged? Forget fantasy and enjoy a fairy tale for discerning adults. Worth watching again - and again.
I really enjoyed this - a very different type of movie but thoroughly entertaining - the only downside was the main character - one of the Wilson brothers (possibly Owen) it didnt suit him, it would have been better suited to someone else though strangely that didnt affect my enjoyment of the movie as I was thrilled to see the old 'real life characters such as Salvador Dali, and the artists of that era, etc.
What a great idea for a movie.
I was looking forward to this film and was very disappointed. Cliche after cliche with a saccharin fairytale plot. This rose-tinted view (yellow-tinted in reality) of tourist Paris with a romantic view of its artistic pass somehow remains entertaining. Still recommend a viewing but just keep your expectations low.
Woody does light fantasy with Paris as a backdrop. Very enjoyable 3.5 for us
Worst movie I've ever seen.
fun and entertaining and even a little though provoking
Pretty dull acting with horrible holes in the storyline which stretched credibility, some nice scenery in Paris.
Delightfully quirky movie. Ernest Hemingway steals the show, with Dali a close second. Thoroughly enjoyed. Great lazy Sunday afternoon movie :)
Original but disappointing , fell asleep
I loved this movie-much to my surprise- its is sweet and whimiscal and has a gentle, encouraging message about living in the present, not the past.
Well see I don't know what all the fuss was about -this movie is really boring!
A go with the flow type of movie which is good to watch. Couldn't stand the American family though.
I had been reluctant to get this movie because I'm just not a fan of Woody Allen films, but this I totally enjoyed. Romantic, feel good, great music and wonderful storyline.
What a fun movie. Owen Wilson doing Woody Allen - who'd a thunk it. (Woody Allen obviously). The music and Paris are a bonus.
Wonderfully whimsical. Just leave all ratioanlity to one side.
Such a charming mixture of intellect, comedy and whimsy.
Beautifully written, Mr Allen rightly won the 2012 Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
Forget realism unless you can explain to me logically how Dorothy survived a hurricane to find hereself in OZ.
This is a tale of dreams - the dream of another, better time, a better lover, a better life.
Using mostly loving satire Woody gently unearths the foibles inherent in all times and all people, although
he reserves his cruelest humor for the contemporary Americans.
Might we miss the best of our own time while we dream too much of another?
Should we settle for what we have now instead of chasing phantoms?
Woody makes it easy for our hero. The phantoms come to him, thrilling and enticing.
Perhaps the romance of Hemmingway and Degas is lost, but then again perhaps it can be found now, in Paris, with...
You will have to see the movie, and dream your own dreams.
If you like Woody Allen films but have had enough of Woody Allen playing the lead role - this film is for you.
The plot is enjoyable and the time travel scenes are understated (no acceleration to 88mph or flashing lights and explosions), but it helps to have the wikipedia page open while you're watching it because sometimes I got confused as to who the famous authors/film makers/artists were. We all know Picasso and Hemingway, but some of the others were more obscure. I really enjoyed the film and the view of the beautiful city of Paris.
Lovely travelogue for Paris. Boring storyline.
Terrible acting, dreary, disappointing and boring
Disappointed could have been great. Typical arthouse Woody Allen has potential for a great storyline but never quite makes it. Time travel movies always difficult as to how they "get there", not much thought put into this one very corny & simple. The real disappointment was the token performance/presence given to the 1920's famous artist the lead character meets, such a waste. Weak romantic plot, Wilson tries hard, support cast displayed basic acting. Paris scenery magnificent. Overall just a fair night's entertainment.
The storyline is pleasant, if quite naive, even childish in parts. The acting is terrible though. A disappointment.
Disappointing movie although enjoyable for the Parisien scenery
Really a bit scatty for my enjoyment.
Was disappointed by latest WA movie. His fundamental longing for a better age is his trademark. Reflects his deep discontentment with life as it is. Was fascinating being drawn into the fantasy world of Hemingway, etc. Left guessing by conclusion - would this relationship, if consummated, answer the key question. Knowing WA, I doubt it!
Somewhat disappointing, simply because it could've been a lot better. Time travel is not uncommon in movies, and here the way the character goes back to the past is well done and repeated every time with twists. But what is never shown is how he gets back from the past to the present; it just seems to happen and is very odd. The scenario also offers great potential for fun on account of knowing the future and bringing back artefacts from the future. The movie exploits that on a few occasions, but not nearly as much as it might have.
paris was the star in this movie. a beautiful city.
Oh so very dreary! Started out fabulously but even the main character had a drawly Woody Allen voice - not at all appealing. I think this is the last Woody Allen film I'll ever watch. Could they have thrown any more famous artists into the film and all at this wide eyed Owen Wilson. It just went on and on. The star of the film was the City of Paris, beautiful filmed if only the film went on as it started....
If you like Woody Allen and his quirky mannerisms then you will enjoy Owen Wilson in this little gem of a movie. The storyline mixes the past and the present beautifully and the scenery is like a virtual Paris postcard. Enjoy!
What a great film, the Hemingway portrayal is spot on - read 'A Moveable Feast' and you can hear the characters voice narrating it in your head... it's uncanny!! I loved Kathy Bates doing Gertrude Stein too, she's so brilliant. There's nothing not to like about this film... oh by the way, it won the best screenplay oscar at 2012 Academy Awards - well deserved!
Was worried this would be overrated but I really loved it. Beautiful, funny and enjoyable.
I am not a fan of Woody Allen however I loved this movie. At the beginning of the movie, I thought that I was not going to like this one. Great movie, excellent cast, loved the story line - brilliant.
liked it. I would have to say it is the first movie of Woody Allen's I actually enjoyed. Wilson plays a great part. Good script, great characters. Cheers, Light watching.
You would have to have a hard heart not to like this film. Woody Allen has cast Paris in the New York role and shown this city up in the most beautiful light. I've walked across the bridges and the boulevards showcased here and they really do look this fabulous. The intriguing time traveling tale plays second fiddle to showing off Paris though. Owen Wilson really is on career best as Gil Pender (a Woody character if there every was one) trying to write a great novel and getting advice from famous celebrities from Paris in the 20's and Paris in the 1980's. The only let down was the annoying Rachel McAdams who doesn't disappoint. You just want to skip over every scene she is in.
Being a fan of Woody Allen, I am always excited when I get to see his new film. First let's talk about Wilson who brilliantly shines in this. Allen and Wilson make a great union and collaboration. The dialogues as always with Allen are a gem. Now what I just didn't get is the storyline. Wilson visits Paris with his in laws and future then every night he is part of the Parisian history, he encounters Hemmingway, Picasso, Dali... And all the celebrities of that "Belle ?poque" period.
Who knows how? So here he is Wilson's character is in today's Paris during the day and at night in the past with Lautrec, Fitzgerald... My gosh I found it hard to watch. We all know how Allen's such a weird imagination but for me the story was silly and childish and even Wilson and all the other talents in this movie can't make me forget how stupid that movie was. Allen's got these old ideas about Paris and for sure seeing where he's filmed the French capital looks wonderful. Falling in love with Paris from a 5 star hotel and chauffeured limousine is easy however the reality isn't part of this film. It's all in Allen's imagination!
