A group of college-age children of the former upper class spend the night hours of Christmas Vacation together. By accident they meet and drag into the group Tom, a West Side 'radical' antagonistic to them and all they stand for on socio-political grounds. Tom's longtime romantic interest in the glamorous, excessively popular Serena attracts him to the group. Not part of the group but looming in the background is rich, handsome, dangerous Rick, admired by the girls, despised by the men. In the decadent post-Christmas days, Rick's shadow falls over the group and disintegration and decline soon follows...

If Woody Allen was 21 and cool, he would have made this film. Witty, stylish film about young New Yorkers. I saw this years ago and loved it. Still love it now. This made Whit Stillman's name overnight.

I don't know why this movie is not more well known. It has some amazing lines and insights throughout. If you like well-written talk-fests, this is for you.

The first of Whit Stillmans fine trilogy. As well executed as a Jane Austin Novel.
