Grieving widower Garret Blake builds boats for a living. Rebuilding his life - that's another matter. But that's before Theresa Osborne comes to his North Carolina village. Theresa, a lonely divorcee and researcher for the Chicago Tribune, knows Garret is the author of the message she found inside a bottle on a Cape Cod beach. And she knows the message spoke to her in a way that profoundly touched her heart. Kevin Costner as Garret and Robin Wright Penn as Theresa bring high-voltage starpower to Message in a Bottle, a tale of love lost and found based on Nicholas Sparks' bestseller. "You choose - the past or the future. Pick one and stick with it," Garret's spry father Dodge (Paul Newman) advises. The advice sticks. So does the impact of this tender, movingly filmed tale.

Nothing wrong with watching on your own a tear jerker movie with beautiful people and two tragic love stories. Is there? Sniff

Definitely a chick flick for a quite anniversary night at home. (I was interested in seeing how currents worked to get the bottle where it was.) My wife chose this...one to enjoy together.

I'm not a fan of Nicholas Sparks stories so hadn't read it and didn't expect a lot other than schmaltz. It could have been a great love story but something about it I can't put my finger on just makes it a mediocre one. The scenery was lovely and Kevin Costner is great but in the end it is very schmaltzy, lots of swelling music and sweeping shots. Easy watch chick flick.

A journey in the grieving process of a man who loved and though he would never again... A reminder that life may leads us many ways and the crossroads are many along the journey...

Well acted and this poignant story was touching. I was disappointed in how it concluded. I felt the behaviour was not consistent with the characters as we had come to know them. It almost seemed like a finish to the movie had to be found quickly. This was the only negative. Overall I rate the film well.

I thought this was a very entertaining movie, well acted with beautiful scenery. The interaction between the two of them looked very real, shame about the ending though!

A most enjoyable movie if a little drawn out time-wise. Paul Newman was a class act - perfectly cast and a delight to see his work at his age. Robin Wright Penn - absolutely gorgeous and her acting was superb. But It was so frustrating to see kevin Costner's character not seeing her true value until it was too late. Kevin did well acting wise and casting was good. The story was good despite fairy-tale elements. Nice sub-plot involving the relationship between Costner's dead wife's family and Costner too - was a bonus.

Kevin Costner, another one of my faves, does a good job in this sad role as does Paul Newman with his grumpy old character. Wasn't impressed with Robin Wright's performance though. Also, it was a bit predictable and cheesy in parts, so it didn't have me reaching for the tissues.

Even though this would be classed as a "girlie" movie my son enjoyed it, particularly the banter between Costner and Newman. They were well matched and undoubtedly Costner would have learned quite a bit from seasoned actor Paul Newman. Newman is a powerhouse performer and I have always enjoyed watching his movies. Illeana Douglas provided a great performance, with chemistry very much alive between her and Costner, so much so that I was begging internally for a miracle to take place in the end. Their love and pain seemed very real.

This earns 4 stars just for the perve factor of Kevin Costner AND Paul Newman, a lovely romance without the usual ending.

If the choice is to watch this movie or a re-run of Country Practice, choose Country Practice. I was looking for the fast-forward button through the whole of watching Message in A Bottle. It is so slow!
