It isn't flawless, but it is inexplicably beautiful. The story, the acting, the music, the cinematography, and everything else is top notch. Well worth the watch for the more cultured audience.

OLD KYOTO IN CALIFORNIA
says
A movie about Geishas, made by Americans in English, in California, on a custom built set made to look like old Kyoto, cast is a strange mix of Chinese actors (or rather I should say actresses) and Asian American (young girl/actress), etc. The dreadful mix of various accents was a shocker indeed (it is spoken in English but with accents). The whole thing felt very phony/ Westernized. But On a positive side, it is very visually pretty, I mean all colourful kimonos, actresses, the hairdos, make ups, Japanese gardens and interiors, exteriors, etc. Make sure that you view the extra features explaining the costume designing, and "geisha boot camp" (training the actresses in geisha-like manners), also explains the music composition and performances using some oriental instruments as well as western string instruments, played by real virtuosos of viola and cello. I did not like the ending, too romantic for me; unbelievable to me. But overall worth viewing for it's . Worth three or four stars. I will be generous: lets say 4 stars, despite some dissapointments mentioned above...

Sumptuous, under-rated pic - though those who've read the book are disappointed. Lead is a touch bland, but Go Li and Michelle Yeogh are great. Cinematography by Australian Dion Bebe won a deserved Oscar.

Visually breathtaking. Quite long, so possibly not for those with a short attention span, but I found it to be a beautiful and very watchable film. The Chinese actresses are stunning, but I couldn't help but wish some of those main characters were played by Japanese actresses, as that seems like such a critical factor in a movie about geishas.

An excellent portrayal of an incredible book. While it us, as is almost always the case, a mere shadow of the novel, it is still recommended watching. Visually snd emotionally engaging, it's a story not to be missed.

This is a window into the world of a young girl brought up to be a geisha in wartime Japan. Although confronting, it is skillfully acted by its two (famous) Chinese lead actresses. We may not be able to relate to the 'other world' life of the geisha but, as a story, it is beautifully told.

Although this moving is over 2 hours long, I was interested the whole way through. Beautiful cinematography from Dion Beebe and good performances all round. Very enjoyable.

An interesting movie which keeps you involved right to the last minute. Initially had me in by its colours and foreign culture and rituals but totally involved by the end. Its main flaw is a strangely stilted script which is sometimes clumsy in the delivery. Almost like native Japanese speakers being forced to read English (no subtitles, every thing that counts is in English). Good movie.

A Japanese movie about a Geisha, made by Americans in English with Chinese actors. On paper, it's a misbegotten chimera of a movie, and that's how it felt watching it. The dreadful accents were distracting, and even knowing as little as I do about Japan the whole thing felt very sanitized and Westernized. On top of it all it was long and dull with little real drama.

This movie is truly outstanding. While the story is slow, it is so intriguing that it drags you in as you are taken through a thoroughly believable world created by Rob Marshall (who also directed Chicago) and the cast and crew. Set in the years leading up to, during and for a short period after WWII it is set at a time when Japan reinvents itself and desperately holds onto a culture doomed to change forever. As a side note, don't miss the "behind the scenes" special features on this DVD, you will not believe which characters can't speak English!

This film adaptation of the Arthur Golden novel of the same name, pleases both the eye and the heart. The film follows the story of a young girl, sold off to pay her parents debt. Her being lucky enough to go to a Geisha house while her sister is not so lucky. As the film progresses it shows how people change and grow to success when they are driven by something they believe in. Something beautiful, something called love. I give it 4 stars as it was terrific, the only thing i would've liked from this was if the film was in japanese. Now that would be a fantastic!

Great casting of the child and adult Geisha. Big mistake to have Japanese actors struggling to act in English. Missed much of the dialogue because of this. Japanese with subtitles would have been far more effective. Haven't read book, and won't now.

Very beautiful, fancinating but limited glimpse of a number of Japanese worlds. Beautiful but limited. Not incisive enough to impress beyond enjoyable viewing.

Watch the featurettes before watching the movies. You'll be more aware of the settings, costumes, music, so will appreciate the movie better.

One of the best foreign films I have seen to date. So very non Hollywood which is a refreshing change. I love Hollywood but it is nice to view a movie that isn't all bang him up or sex being the drawing card for it once in awhile. No violence and no swearing, it was a wonderful piece of film making and a great story of what a Geisha really is all about.

It was disappointing all the actors spoke in English, it lessened the authenticity of the film for me. Also using Chinese actors was a bit of a turn off but maybe that's because I lived in Japan and can tell Asian people apart. As always, the book is better than the movie.

I liked this movie, I have read the book, and for a movie based on the book, didn't think they did too badly following the storyline. The charatcers and love story was captured and the basic storyline followed. Well done.

Pure visual magic! A bit of a better understanding of Japanese culture would have helped more fully appreciate the story but this was more than compensated for by the sheer depth of colour and artistry of film itself. One of the greats!

Fabulous version of the book. Past readers will not be disappointed with the film version. The DVD special features were absolutely fascinating, about the research and training that they undertook to make it as authentic as possible. We watched it over 2 nights as there was so much to see. Absolutely loved it.

Reading the novel was initiative for me to watch this movie. A splendid tale of trials, tribulation, and finding one’s self all in a beautiful and mysterious setting. The movie fails to draw out the intense emotions that it had the opportunity to do. I felt that its depth was fairly superficial in terms of how much further into the emotions and journey it could have went. I felt that the beginning of the movie wasn’t clearly set and those who did not read the novel would miss out on a lot of the context but, overall, it was a fantastic movie, good for a rainy day in but would not win any awards.
