It isn't flawless, but it is inexplicably beautiful. The story, the acting, the music, the cinematography, and everything else is top notch. Well worth the watch for the more cultured audience.
A movie about Geishas, made by Americans in English, in California, on a custom built set made to look like old Kyoto, cast is a strange mix of Chinese actors (or rather I should say actresses) and Asian American (young girl/actress), etc. The dreadful mix of various accents was a shocker indeed (it is spoken in English but with accents). The whole thing felt very phony/ Westernized. But On a positive side, it is very visually pretty, I mean all colourful kimonos, actresses, the hairdos, make ups, Japanese gardens and interiors, exteriors, etc. Make sure that you view the extra features explaining the costume designing, and "geisha boot camp" (training the actresses in geisha-like manners), also explains the music composition and performances using some oriental instruments as well as western string instruments, played by real virtuosos of viola and cello. I did not like the ending, too romantic for me; unbelievable to me. But overall worth viewing for it's . Worth three or four stars. I will be generous: lets say 4 stars, despite some dissapointments mentioned above...
Really enjoyed this movie! Great visuals and costumes.
Sumptuous, under-rated pic - though those who've read the book are disappointed. Lead is a touch bland, but Go Li and Michelle Yeogh are great. Cinematography by Australian Dion Bebe won a deserved Oscar.
Having enjoyed the book found the movie a bit disappointing.
Fantastic, a beautiful movie.
Had high expectations. Found it too long and boring. I didn't really care what happened to anyone. Thumbs down
Visually breathtaking. Quite long, so possibly not for those with a short attention span, but I found it to be a beautiful and very watchable film. The Chinese actresses are stunning, but I couldn't help but wish some of those main characters were played by Japanese actresses, as that seems like such a critical factor in a movie about geishas.
A little long winded, but visually splendid and entertaining.
Found the storyline very slow plus hard to follow.
I haven't read the book but I love this movie. As others have said it was captivating and extraordinarily beautiful.
Very interesting and engaging movie. Distinctive.
Beautiful photography, excellent casting and acting....I found it a little difficult to follow in places....but, an overall enjoyable flick to watch.
I really enjoyed this one, what a great story it is. Costume and scenes were excellently done and the Chinese actors did an amazing job.
An excellent portrayal of an incredible book. While it us, as is almost always the case, a mere shadow of the novel, it is still recommended watching. Visually snd emotionally engaging, it's a story not to be missed.
This is a window into the world of a young girl brought up to be a geisha in wartime Japan. Although confronting, it is skillfully acted by its two (famous) Chinese lead actresses. We may not be able to relate to the 'other world' life of the geisha but, as a story, it is beautifully told.
Beautiful cinematography and engaging storyline. Highly recommend.
The film was ok but not what I thought it might be.
A visually outstanding movie, and with a storyline that keeps you captivated thruout.
Camera work second to none...a must see classic!
loved this movie, the history of a geisha, and the actress was great. so enjoyable, not just a girls movie.
Although I got a bit confused at times (not difficult for me), I thought this quite fascinating.
I've lived in Tokyo for 5 years and my wife is Japanese. We gave up after 20 minutes because the characters were unrecognisable as Japanese, certainly as Japanese of that era.
The story starts off slow, but is captivaing. Beautifully made.
I found this quite boring but the rest of the family seemed to enjoy it immensely
A lovely movie with a happy ending, although not as good as the book.
Although this moving is over 2 hours long, I was interested the whole way through. I have not read the book so I can't say whether it is faithful adaptation but the ending was not what I expected- a bit too sweet. Beautiful cinematography from Dion Beebe and good performances all round. Very enjoyable.
Well worth watching if you are interested in Japanese history and what role a Geisha played in the society at the time.
I love this moving and have seen it many times. recommended if you're up for a quiet night with a few glasses of wine. such a great story and is simple enough that you can catch up and comprehend the basics of the life of Geisha
This has got to be one of the most visually stunning movies ever... The story in itself had a few holes, and could've been improved, though it's the type of movie that keeps you glued to the TV from start to finish.
Slow moving but enjoyable reality of Geisha's in Japan. Very colourful.
I loved it!!!
I also used a whole box of tissues....
A most beautiful film, transported me to an earlier Japan. Very involving, emotionally.
I preferred the book, but it is visually lush and gorgeous.
Absolutely beautiful. A rough idea is this is a Japanese Cinderella - like movie. If you like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon you will love this.
Beautifully adapted from a great book
Guys! Don't get this movie unless you want to impress a chick. Great history on what a Geisha does and is trained for. Surprisingly enough my older kids, two of them boys actually enjoyed it, to learn the historical side.
Interesting - but no match for the book. The accents were quite hard to get used to and the story went on a bit too long.
excellent cultural exprerience of 1930/40s Japan. Not just a girlly flick. Classic story grows towards the climax. Strong character actors. Lovey star. The pace of the move suits the Japanese cultural setting. Not to be missed
Beautifully made movie, a glimpse into the mysterious life of a geisha.
Very long movie but well worth the time to watch. Takes a while to get going but a wonderful insight to a secret world.
Was a pretty awesome movie. With a character you can love, one you can HATE (!!!). I thought though it went a little long at the end. It just slowed right down, and I was almost considering fast fowarding it.. The ending was quiet pleasing though :)
A really good watch a real gem with a good story not to be missed
A great Spielberg Movie. Very interesting.
I read the book a long time ago..this movie made the book come alive..loved both the book and movie
Unexpectedly dull considering the reviews it received
Pretty good story, terrible dialogue in parts. Also a bit strange that they shot the movie in English instead of Japanese. Oh well, it's still decent.
Great Movie, a tragic yet good story of someone who overcomes their circumstances. Definite girls movie but has plenty to hold the guys as well. worth watching.
How different the traditions of the world are is beautifully portrayed in this film. The acting is very sensitive set in wartime Japan. A must see
I like these type of movies as it has a good storey line & seems almost true.
I highly recomend this movie for future borrowers.
I thought the movie was sad but well put together thoroughly enjoyed it
really enjoyed this movie usually i find the books better but this was just as good
WOW!!! great acting..fantastic costumes..picturesque settings..(almost) a true story of pre-war Japanese culture of Geishas... but from an American viewpoint..would have scored a five star had a Japanese director been involved..my wife adored this film..I was fascinated to the end..wanted more
Excellent movie. I loved it.
Totally engaging - absolutely enchanting! A wonderful look into Japanese culture midway through the last century. Superb characterisation and plot. A must see
Not quite as good as the book. A little difficult to follow.
I loved this movie as I had enjoyed the book. It's difficult to accept that it was written by a bloke! It's definitely one of my 'best five'.
I THOUGHT THIS MOVIE WAS GREAT BEFORE WATCHING IT I HAD NO IDEA WHAT A GEISHA DID I HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THEIR LIVES NOW
Breathtaking cinema..an insight into pre war japan's Geisha community....wonderful cinematography and acting is superb..five stars... easily the best movie for many a month..
Saw at the cinema, read the book then bought the DVD. Filmmaker's attempts to update the geisha for western tastes works for me, as does the story. Will be a big moneymaker on DVD for eons.
Excellent adaptation of a wonderful novel
This is a fantastic movie. I was very engrossed in the story.
Beautiful movie. Loved the ending. Was interesting to read reviews of other members, especially those who gave it two stars or less!! I would watch it again and thoroughly enjoy it again. Gives an insight into the world of the Geisha.
It was not good as I thought it would be a little disappointed with it but the music was brilliant.
Beauty and fear depicted so well. Excellent.
Visually stunning and a pretty good adaptation of the book.
An interesting movie which keeps you involved right to the last minute. Initially had me in by its colours and foreign culture and rituals but totally involved by the end. Its main flaw is a strangely stilted script which is sometimes clumsy in the delivery. Almost like native Japanese speakers being forced to read English (no subtitles, every thing that counts is in English). Good movie.
Beautiful but I didn't believe the love story. The Chinese actors cast as Japanese people confused my grandmother, she wasn't sure what all these Chinese women were doing working as Geisha in Japan.
Good movie made better by watching the additional material
Excellent film - loved the cinematography on this movie - some of the angles were just right so good to see after the films where you wish the cameraman had moved two feet to the left! Really enjoyable and very watchable - great performance from the evil geisha - really nasty!
I didn't find this boring at all. You need to be in a more settled mood for it, after all it's not an action-thriller, but I loved it and got very involve with the characters. Beautiful to watch and great cinematography.
A little hard to follow in places, but well worth watching, we enjoyed it.
Beautiful. Does the novel justice!
This movie could move along more quickly, however, the actors portray their characters well.
A nice film, but not brilliant.
This film is okay, but the book is much better.
I think it makes more sense and it could be much more interesting if you have read the book.
I liked it.
beautiful story & photography
A Japanese movie about a Geisha, made by Americans in English with Chinese actors. On paper, it's a misbegotten chimera of a movie, and that's how it felt watching it. The dreadful accents were distracting, and even knowing as little as I do about Japan the whole thing felt very sanitized and Westernized. On top of it all it was long and dull with little real drama.
facinating setting of time wonderful characters and sadness as well as beauty throughout the movie
I found it a little slow and didn't think it really went anywhere.
Fabulous! Read the book which is usually better but just loved this movie. Could watch it again no problem
beautiful to see.. yes, a bit slow..but worth the effort stick with it.. i still remember special scenes in it.
Enjoyed the movie, beautiful story line. Was mesmerized and would watch it again and again.
I've read the book and loved it. I loved the story in the book and wasn't disappointed in the film although it would have looked better on the big screen.
It is about a young and poor japanese girl. The girl has innocence written all over her even as an adult.
The movie is different, well told and is worth watching just once.
Too slow moving for me - but I can see how some people might enjoy it
this is an enspireing movie. well done.
I thought the special extra about the costumes fascinating and better than the movie itself. So much could have been done with this story, so much was left unsaid and played down. I'm glad I saw it though.
A excellent movie, well acted and beautifully filmed.
Great story. Fantastic costumes and authentic recreation of Japan during this period. Acting is superb.
an excellent piece of film making.
This movie is truly outstanding.
While the story is slow, it is so intriguing that it drags you in as you are taken through a thoroughly believable world created by Rob Marshall (who also directed Chicago) and the cast and crew.
Set in the years leading up to, during and for a short period after WWII it is set at a time when Japan reinvents itself and desperately holds onto a culture doomed to change forever.
As a side note, don't miss the "behind the scenes" special features on this DVD, you will not believe which characters can't speak English!
It might not be everyones cup of tea but I enjoyed it.
Really enjoyed this movie, opened my eyes to whole new world.
The best thing I can say about this film is great camera work
Interesting but not engaging - could do with a hefty edit
Too long. My concentration goes after a couple of hours!
Well acted and just as good as the book
Not a very fast paced film, but not bad all the same...wouldn't watch it again in a hurry though.
followed the book very well. scenery, acting, set and photography absolutely supurb.
An insight into an exotic and lost world. The community of the 'floating world'of the geisha. This adaptation from the book of the same name treats the subject with delicacy and attempts to enlighten we, the westerner, of the strange world of the geisha.
This movie was very interesting. It showed the real life of a geisha, not what most of us think a geisha really is. Scenery in parts is beautiful. this is the third time i have viewed this movie. Enjoyed it every time.
Well done, amazing that this was all made in america, the set was awesome, great to get the extra footage.
Educational as well as stunning, could watch it more than once.I mean who wouldn't love him
If you like the book, you'll like this
An interesting look at an amazing lifestyle.
Not really my kind of film - well made of its kind.
I would watch it again as
I really liked this movie
This film adaptation of the Arthur Golden novel of the same name, pleases both the eye and the heart. The film follows the story of a young girl, sold off to pay her parents debt. Her being lucky enough to go to a Geisha house while her sister is not so lucky. As the film progresses it shows how people change and grow to success when they are driven by something they believe in. Something beautiful, something called love.
I give it 4 stars as it was terrific, the only thing i would've liked from this was if the film was in japanese. Now that would be a fantastic!
great movie, the behind the scenes were interesting to.
I found it worth watching on many levels, escpecially for the costumes and set decor.
a bit boring, I'm afraid.
a feel good novie, made specially for women
This was a wonderful/brilliant movie. The insight into the life of a geisha and all that it entails shows the pleasure but most of all the pain they must endure. To love but not love fully would be so heartwrenching. I will be seeing this one again.
I found this movie a little slow, too many long rainy scenes for me.
Some will find the life of a Geisha fascinating, but I didn't find it so.
many scenes were so dark it was hard to know who was on the screen, I also found the oriental 'music' annoying.
Chinese in a japanese movie...didn't really enjoy
can not rate as could not wacth
Beautiful cinematography, and a great insight into the life of a geisha
Interesting in parts but rather heavy going and difficult to understand all the threads of the story.
Great casting of the child and adult Geisha. Big mistake to have Japanese actors struggling to act in English. Missed much of the dialogue because of this. Japanese with subtitles would have been far more effective. Haven't read book, and won't now.
Very beautiful, fancinating but limited glimpse of a number of Japanese worlds. Beautiful but limited. Not incisive enough to impress beyond enjoyable viewing.
Watch the featurettes before watching the movies. You'll be more aware of the settings, costumes, music, so will appreciate the movie better.
This movie was excellent i really enjoyed it, i would recommend it?
Expectations were higher. Thought I would be more enthralled but there were too many parts which were downright boring.
Wasn't expecting too much but really enjoyed this movie. Fascinating insight into Japanese culture and beautifully shot.
Good story that is really interesting.
Great Movie which my wife throughly enjoyed, definitely worth watching
A sensuous and a well-told story of a girl growing up to be a geisha. Worth seeing just to get a better understanding of this foreign and often mischaracterized world.
Enlightening and informative. An enjoyable movie to watch.
One of the best foreign films I have seen to date. So very non Hollywood which is a refreshing change. I love Hollywood but it is nice to view a movie that isn't all bang him up or sex being the drawing card for it once in awhile. No violence and no swearing, it was a wonderful piece of film making and a great story of what a Geisha really is all about.
Having read the book my expectations were somewhat high. The film delivered on some points but lacked the emotion of the book.
It was disappointing all the actors spoke in English, it lessened the authenticity of the film for me. Also using Chinese actors was a bit of a turn off but maybe that's because I lived in Japan and can tell Asian people apart. As always, the book is better than the movie.
Well worth watching. Fascinating look into the world that was Geisha, their training and what was expected of them.
Awesome movie - very thought provoking. We thoroughly enjoyed watching this and hope that Geisha's get a better deal now.
You must have patience with this movie - it is a story but it is beatifully done.
Beautiful. This movie is amazing to watch, if only for the Bonsai. I would recommend it to any one.
it is really an eye opener and is not a girly flick my husband enjoyed it to good for couples to see recommend no problems
I liked this movie, I have read the book, and for a movie based on the book, didn't think they did too badly following the storyline.
The charatcers and love story was captured and the basic storyline followed. Well done.
Really interesting story.
Pure visual magic! A bit of a better understanding of Japanese culture would have helped more fully appreciate the story but this was more than compensated for by the sheer depth of colour and artistry of film itself. One of the greats!
Slow gentle movie but also deals with the harsh reality orphans face when sold as slaves. Excellent cinematography & music score, suitable for family viewing, unusual enjoyable 'chick flick'
beautiful movie, better than the book
Such an intersting story about the lives of geishas. I cried at the end.
We loved this film! Could have been partly because we, just the two of us, sat down in comfy chairs for a Xmas dinner of a huge platter of sushi, and watched the Geisha. A perfect, stress-free Xmas Day! And a fascinating film of a fascinating topic.
some terrific visuals and a good story
I enjoyed the film more than the book.
Beautiful cinematography, great story line and excellent cast.
Interesting story about the life of a geisha
Fabulous version of the book. Past readers will not be disappointed with the film version. The DVD special features were absolutely fascinating, about the research and training that they undertook to make it as authentic as possible. We watched it over 2 nights as there was so much to see. Absolutely loved it.
Thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Totally appreciate the underlying ways of a Geisha now, now that I understand a little better too. Certainly love Ken Watanabe more and more...
Reading the novel was initiative for me to watch this movie. A splendid tale of trials, tribulation, and finding one’s self all in a beautiful and mysterious setting.
The movie fails to draw out the intense emotions that it had the opportunity to do. I felt that its depth was fairly superficial in terms of how much further into the emotions and journey it could have went.
I felt that the beginning of the movie wasn’t clearly set and those who did not read the novel would miss out on a lot of the context but, overall, it was a fantastic movie, good for a rainy day in but would not win any awards.
riveting history and culture all the way
A bit slow but a simply beautiful movie. The music, costume and scenery are compelling.
I found the book to be enthralling, but the movie was a little slow in places. In most cases, I have always found that books are better than the movie.
Interesting. A little confusing at times, but well acted and a good story.
Excellent story of the life of a geisha. Very moving and compassionate.
not bad, wouldnt really recommend it
Beautifully captured. Wonderful for those who are deeply sentimental.
Beautifully filmed, fascinating story and insight into Japanese culture.
a beautiful movie cinematography was superb as was everything about this movie it is the complete package
If you enjoyed the book, you will enjoy this!!
A wonderful story rich in culltural significance.
Very interesting film.Well photographed about a culture we know so little about.
A very long movie with not much happening, very weak.
Extremely moving well worth viewing.
A very interesting look at Japanese culture, especially during World War II.
Just exquisite. Stunningly beautifully shot, providing insight into the fascinating, mysterious world of the Geisha. Plot a little thin in parts? Who cares, the positives are just overwhelming.
I really enjoyed this movie. I would like to think it was a true story and wondered if it was; until the happy ending.
Visually attractive, believable characters and absorbing storyline. Maybe slightly more activity and less intense emotionality for me, but perfectly pitched for my wife
Fantastic movie, I want to watch it again and again! It's a must see!!! After renting it I'm thinking of buying a copy, that's how much I loved it!
Having read the book first I was thrilled to see that this movie stayed true to the authors writing. Beautiful scenery, costumes, hair/makeup and music. My mental image of each character was cast to perfection.
This movie will be looked upon as a classic just as Gone With the Wind was. Don't just hire this movie, buy it!
Whilst very good, I thought quite slow in parts. The book was excellent, I'm afraid this didn't live up to it.
its a great movie regardlesss that its a s ad story. i recommend it to anyone and the bonus is no subtitles
brillant mwah
'
I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't read the book.
Fabulous cinematography and a great insight Japanese "geisha" culture in the 1940's.
Girls - worth spending a lazy rainy Sunday snuggling up to watch this one.
Guys - snuggle up with your your wife/girlfriend ... who cares about the movie!
It starts off very slow and takes you time to get the gist of the story. Once this obtained, it is an enthralling insight into the Japanese world of the Geishas.
Good especially if you've watched the book as you have more idea what is going on. Bit of a chick flick.
Excrutiatingly slow and boring, I'd rather have to watch grass grow or paint dry that this drivel.
