Boring boring boring and then I woke up! Don't bother!
I can see Lars von Trier's smile as he reads these reviews, exactly the responses he was hoping for. I liked this film, it isn't dystopian, rather it was fatalistic, Dunst's performance is perfect, she's the eye of the whirlpool around which everything revolves gradually sinking into her centre. It haunted me for a long time, the final scene as they close their eyes and the conflagration begins. We are so vulnerable here on this planet, Hawking is right, we have to leave.
I normally love a good arthouse film but this is unwatchable. I lasted less than 5 minutes before fatal boredom set it.
I was surprised how good this film was, I am no fan of Lars Von Trier. This is film more about film making as an art form than anything else, quite philosophical, with many references to Tarkovsky, Kubrick, Hitchcock, Bergman, Coppola, Tati and so on. This near masterpiece is not for the impatient viewer who may interpret this as pretentious dribble. Plus, I know I am going to enjoy a film when it gets a lot of "worst film ever" comments.
This movie surprised the hell out of me. Lars Von Trier is always such a difficult director. His works are sometimes hard to watch and uncomfortable. Melancholia is marvellous! What a turn up for the books. He's assembled a stellar cast, some like John Hurt who only have a few lines but they all work well together. Kirsten Dunst is far removed from her Hollywood self, playing the melancholic depressive who is somehow revived by the thought of a planet called Melancholia potentially crashing into the earth. The classical music score is breathlessly good and this is an easy movie to watch. You'll think about it for a long while afterwards.
i liked it!
Since I cannot say that in such a nice way like Simon Miraudo, I would direct the readers to his review in the "Critics Review" tab.
I can see why some people loved this movie. The acting was on the nail, it was well shot, with quite a few scenes looking like they came from some couture magazine shoot.
However this movie just didn't do it for me. I found the storyline very ordinary, the characters just irked me. Both sisters suffered from being lost in their own world, Justine came across as self-absorbed, and Claire as the beige background.
I didn't enjoy, I won't watch it again, and I can't recommend it to anyone.
I tried to find a way of liking this but because of the obvious ending I was really just waiting for it to end. The characters seemed incomplete and even if you could ignore the many flaws it simply turned out to be an unsatisfying movie overall. The hand held shots were doing my head in and took away from what was trying o be an epic.
Melancholy understates the feeling left by this film. It is surprising that someone like Charlotte Rampling agreed to participate in a film that is nothing more than a typical disaster movie, without any excitement or action.
Wow! Weird, raw and weird. Von Triers is a master of the genre and he doesn't disappoint. You wonder where things are going and where they have been, but ultimately you have to fill in the blanks and actually do have enough info to do it well. As a stark contrast to the hand-held body of the film are extraordinary, surrealistic, beautifully composed images that are so powerful they remain part of your filmic memory. The ending is an amazing cathartic tidal wave. Wow.
Worst movie I have ever had the misfortune to watch.
nit fantastic. abit boring and slow
OMG what a terrible movie, the first half is spent wondering what the hell is going on and then in the second half I kept waiting for a plot development and the credits rolled. The whole movie looks like it was shot with a handheld camera.
Conclusion: someone's film school project got a dash of funding but they should have invested in a story writer, and a steadycam.
WOW. Not what we expected. Not what we expected at all.
I love how people on here who liked this movie assume that those of us who didnt arwe a bunch of dullards who would prefer to watch Bruce Willis or Adam Sandler.
This movie was painful, the first half was a complete waste of an hour of my life, and the 2nd half was just totally disturbing.
honestly why make movies like this when it makes some angry and others feel more depressed than they already are. Unrealistic premise, stupid storyline, what more can be said?
I was bored after 5minutes, I tried hard to stay awake.
For those of you who give this a 4& 5 star rating, please fill me in.
To strange for me.....................
ok you nit wits I discovered the hidden secrets........fast forward from beginning so the scenes appear normal and then wait for the surprises.....the END!!!!!!!!!
This is one of the best films I have ever seen. It's haunting. Truly stunned me.
Very poor story line.
Boring - couldn't wait till the end.
Probably a bit 'Arty' for most, but for those who appreciate some Cinema as Art it is well worth watching. Avoid this Movie if you are into Action type movies, or consider Adam Sandler to be one of the finest actors of his generation!
I love reading reviews from people who cannot discern if a movie would be to their taste prior to renting/watching... Lol!
This was hands-down the best film I saw last year; but then again, I didn't see Transformers 3...
absolute load of unmitigated nonsense.
Beautifully shot and wonderful cinematography, but **** me - this is a boring film. I still haven't decided if I'm glad I watched it yet.. One should shudder when reading "Arthouse" and "Sci-Fi" in the same movie description.
Painful to watch. Turned off after 15 mins.
Strange and yet not haunting movie which engages your heart and mind.
I have never written a review before but this movie .... AARRRRRRGGGHHHH!!!! ..this how i felt during and after the movie. I fastforwarded most of it, hoping it would improve but no, it got worse! It is an absolutely annoying and frustrating film. Don't watch it unless you like weird, depressing, arty films. And as Simone wrote..do not watch if you are on a personal low. Points to the actors though. They were great. Wish I had read peoples reviews before I asked for it.
I did not like this movie at all. It is sad. Not inspiring, not uplifting. Sad and tragic. I would rather watch something full of hope. A waste of time for me.
Beautifully filmed. Fascinating. Bizarre. Incredible setting. Weird, but glad I watched it.
Weird & depressing. Had looked forward to it but disappointed. Not to be watched while on a personal low!!
Fascinating. You'll either love it or hate it. The kind of film that stays with you after it has finished.
Do not waist 2 hours of your life......... would have to be one of the most painful movies ive ever seen all i wanted was for the planet to hit earth and put me out of my misery......
I was really confused at the beginning. I thought the whole movie would "pause" on the scenes and have no dialog. I fast forwarded through this bit. The first part of the movie was incredibly long and drawn out. The very lavish wedding reception seemed to be so set to a tight schedule and to go on for days and days. The second part was almost as bad. Not much seems to happen in this movie and it takes is sweet time in doing so. I enjoyed seeing "Eric Northman" from True Blood in a different role. The depression/sadness theme is also done quite well. I don't mind seeing some indie/arty movies, but this was on just a little too weird and long and not much happening (I think this is why a lot of people just stick to mainstream movies) and I could not wait for the end to come.
I think this film is superbly moving and really profound; but I once heard someone else say "the only good part about the movie was seeing Kirsten Dunst naked".
I guess its not to everyone's tastes.
Intriguing - with all the personal dramas affecting the central characters lives, the main theme overshadowing this was absolute doom. I loved the sadness and 'real' melancholy that hung over the movie, I replayed the ending over and over - it was fascinating and horrible all at once! The scenery and film effects were achingly beautiful.
Beautifully filmed sci-fi movie that focuses almost entirely on 2 characters with anxiety and depression. Not for people who like action.
A movie about depression was never going to be upbeat but halfway through I wanted a planet to hit Earth (like it did in the movie) so I wouldnt have to sit through this pointless movie.
This is a good movie if you like metaphors. if you don't, then you may be dissapointed. This movie is about depression and the end of the world. no aliens, no nukes, just the end. it's about how depressed people act, faced with more depressing news. and how sane people might handle the same news. that's my take on it. i liked it. 4 stars from me
The acting is great. BUT ... Melancholia .... yeah in the end it made me depressed and melancholic watching it. I struggled to get to the end. I love Keifer and Kirsten, but ... oh lord, why do these foreign directors/writers have to be so dismal.
Arty-farty nonsense. Psychic powers meet depression meet global catastrophe. Watching this movie is like having a stone in your shoe, indeed. I often agree with Simon Miraudo's reviews/ranking, but not on this one.
Absolute rubbish! the actors look tired as I was watching this! I have never seen a wedding looking so sad but well the movie is named Melancholia so... Anyway if Lars von Trier has nothing else to film but such a boring story then he should retire. Melancholia is a dreadful piece full of actors staring at each other and telling boring lines that we dont care about and yes the cast are all renown actors and they all look so tired...
Turned it off 10 minutes into it. I never do that??????? No talking just rubbish.
Nihilism & ignorance are not salved by good actors (wishing they were somewhere else). Where do they get funding?
Waste your time somewhere else.
I thought this film was going to be really visually beautiful, I will watch ANYTHING, I have to see a movie through to the end BUT found myself hitting the fast forward button to get to the end. The openning scene was slow but really pretty and it gave me the impression the planet had caused all these beautiful effects - then Nothing. It left me very down, I am a very stable happy person and I was emotionally effected by this movie. Do not watch this film if you are unstable.
I'm a patient, tolerant person, but this was so boring, I fell asleep ... I thought it was a complete waste of time.
very slow story line and a tad confused
i would NOT recommend
I liked this movie but could see it not appealing to many. Probably too much of a 'downer' for many but i thought quite beautifully done & great acting by all. I reckon those who have experienced melancholic periods will identify with this movie. Definately an arthouse pick.
Didnt really get into this movie. Too slow, confusing and or frustrating at times.
Had a bad sound track. Not a dvd problem, just an incompetent sound editor. Didn't matter all that much 'cause it was pretty depressing.
The beginning and ending are the most riveting. The middle is literally, filling. The story moves like molasses and put me in a malaise. However, the gripping sadness and isolation throughout the film proves they're an essential ingredient to the film's core. If you're up for a slow movie that leaves you with a somber slap in the face before the credits roll, you've found your match.
Weird. I found it a hard slog. Wouldn't recommend
dont bother unless you seriously like arthouse that are way out there. Lars you must have been on something to produce that crock..... Should have turned the movie off after 30 mins when nothing really had happened, opening extremely drawn out, but stupidly drawn not to just in case something happen. Husband did walk out at 45min mark and then came back to see part 2. We understood reasoning for movie but saddly this one was a waste of time. Ending is the best bit. 2 hours wasted watching this depressing dribble which left me more depressed than beforehand.
Oh wow I could not wait for this movie to finish.
I found this movie to be very ,very boring.Seemed to me as if half the movie was missing. !!!!!!!!
Even the opening of the credits was drawn out and tedious. I lost patience with it early on and turned it off. I do like arthouse films but this just seemed completely whack and I didn't have the patience to persevere.....
Good film. Not recommended for people suffering from depression.
This movie was in my opinion a waste of time for audience members and a waste of a film. It had no story and certainly nothing intelligent in the movie at all.
Melancholia is not an easy film to watch, it is not uplifting in an way. As a piece of cinematic art it is worthwhile and the actors chosen to convince us of this unique story, play their parts extremely well, especially Kirsten Dunst.
The drama is understated and thus made pore poignant.
Be informed before you view, but view it nevertheless.
If you are like me and love obscure film, beautiful cinematography and a dash of fantasy then you will probably think it is an intyeresting and beautiful piece of art.
If you are not into art house or experimental films then you will probably hate this movie, and believe it is a waste of time.
I can understand why some people dont get this film, but for people who have suffered the black hole of desperate ond hopeless depression then this movie will resonate with you on a personal level.
A wonderful cast and a great job done by Kirsten Dunst.
this is the easily most boring movie I’ve ever saw in my life.
Looks great but so slow it hurts. Kirsten Dunst is brilliant though.
Really struggled to get into this movie, the first scene was way too long. However it was very clever and deserves to be watched as a piece of art.
If you are still awake after the first 15 minutes, this movie is sure to give you melancholia!
Oh god what twaddle, after much eye rolling being subjected to opening 10minutes of slow-motion weirdo 'art' shots, the film changes gear to capture the essence of wedding boredom and family squabbling ... that's right, you've been to one of those, and you don't want to waste your time watching it either.
This has got to be the most boring movie every created. Complete rubbish. From the opening five minutes of total wierdness to the mind-numbing drivel of dialogue. Don't waste your time.
Certainly an acquired taste. Strangely compelling even though I wondered as to why I watched it through to the shocking conclusion.
Ok . . it's not often I end a movie with. . .what the heck? ? ? I have absolutely no idea what it was all about! ! !
Shockingly boring, but also oddly compelling... I think it comes down to what sort of mood you're in at the time. The person I watched it with fell asleep -- make of that what you will.
Very slow, but I liked the idea. Possibly a bit too arthouse for me though.
What a silly movie! The director is so caught up in being arty (gorgeous phobtography) that he has created a silly and unbelievable story. I used the fast forward button many times, as it was painfully slow and annoying
Really bad, don't waste your time or money!
Lars is not for everyone so if you like American pap, don't rent this one. However, the superb photography and compelling performances compensate for the long scenes in which little seems to happen. The script, such as it is, is very 'off the wall' but is a vehicle for bipolar sisters confronting finality.
definitely not my cup of tea.
I liked this movie, it was a little slow to start off with, but had some good actors, and I loved the ending, makes you think what life is all about!! :(
A highly unlikely but almost plausible premise is the basis for the extended title sequence, or overture, and Part 2 of the movie. Part 1 is a rather unrelated and mainly unnecessary wedding party, with the marriage doomed from the start. The setting appears to be an English aristocratic mansion by the sea and there is talk of going to "the village", something the English would say. Yet while there are some British voices, others are American and indeterminate, which is rather unlikely, especially English and American sisters. And the vehicles are left-hand drive, which gives away that it's not in Britain. Indeed, the movie was filmed in Sweden. It gets to be a rather long movie. The Extras recycle the same interviews, which is annoying. The first question to the director, as displayed on screen, is about a character's trades. He sensibly talks about her traits. It is sad to see such lack of quality control. Still, it's a movie that makes an impression.
this one i found went straight over my head, i got the blonde getting married, and i got the planet on collision course with earth.......... but 'denied' of course.......... but everything else including the storyline.............. well that i didn't get at all. Can someone out there in qf land please tell me what it was i missed?? In the end i gave this 3 stars because i was even confused as to whether i liked this or not.
ps interesting ending
It was bleak but pretty to watch. Dunst does very well. I recommend this to people who enjoy good arthouse films.
