Life after Norbit

In 2006, Eddie Murphy made Norbit, a film that was racist, sexist, and worst of all, unfunny. It was considered to be the worst thing he'd ever done by pretty much everybody. And that was in the same year that he abandoned Scary Spice while she was pregnant with his child. I bet if you asked her today, she'd probably think Norbit was worse too. So imagine my surprise when I sat in the cinema and found his latest PG rated comedy to be both i) a clever concept, and ii) well-executed. In fact, I might even go out on a limb and actually say that Meet Dave is, um, good. In Meet Dave, Murphy plays a giant humanoid space-ship that has landed on Earth, and is manned by the tiny, also humanoid aliens from the planet Nim.

The Captain (Murphy again, showing restraint by only playing two characters) leads his crew in a mission to steal all the salt from Earth's oceans to save their own dying planet. This act might also kill Earth, but it's a price they're willing to pay. Their mission is delayed by unexpected circumstances, as the entire crew begins to take on human traits and become affectionate, fun-loving, and in one case, flamboyantly homosexual. As the giant spaceship (referred to as Dave) befriends a single-mother (Banks) and her son, the Captain becomes fond of the planet he is charged with destroying.

Don't be fooled by the awful trailers and marketing campaign (which in the U.S included a flatbed truck carrying a giant model of Murphy's head. Because that's not annoying.) Meet Dave is a pretty good family film, with enough juvenile humour and sweetness to please most. Think of Elf via Galaxy Quest, and you've got a pretty good idea of what to expect. I've come to accept that Axel Foley and Prince Akeem are probably long dead - at least in terms of Murphy creating a character even close to being as funny. But I’ve got to say, there aren't really a lot of problems with Meet Dave.

Murphy plays the awkward spaceship pretty well, and he had me laughing along with most of the children in the audience pretty loudly (and yes, I feel very ashamed as I write this). Banks is also convincing as the kind-hearted single mother, and Ed Helms seems to be enjoying playing the mutinous human-hating crewmember aboard Dave. I suppose if I had to nitpick, the directing is pretty uninspired. The New York setting is wasted here, and it might actually be the ugliest the city has ever looked (that includes Taxi Driver). Also, the CGI is kind of terrible. But the kid's didn't care about that, and to be honest, neither did I while I was watching the film.

What really struck me is the film's sweetness. It gets a little soppy at the end, but it's not out of the film's character, and its kind-of effective as well. In one scene, a hobo shares his blanket with the homeless starship and the kind act really seems to affect the entire crew. This was a really nice comedy, one that I actually enjoyed watching. Compare that with The Love Guru, which hates both its audience and laughter in general.

Don't go in expecting 48 Hours Murphy, or even Bowfinger Murphy. This is a family film, even maybe a kid’s film. But for a kid’s film, it’s pretty good, and there seems to have at least been some care taken in the making. Although it might be a little forgettable, and least it’s not unforgettable for the wrong reasons. It's a long climb up from Norbit, but Murphy's getting there.

3/5

Eddie Murphy saves this movie, he is brilliant. The kids will love it,very funny and a great new spin on the alien thing. I usually don't laugh that much but this had me cracking up! A great nights entertainment for the whole family. My advice don't eat popcorn you will choke laughing. Overall this was way better than i expected, my 10 year old boy loved it.

Was excited to get this movie, had open mind as I had heard it wasn't received well. Started off ok, but story was lacking badly. Huge holes. Painful. The only thing that made it bearable were the special effects. Was funny in parts Eddie Murphy carried the weight of this movie. Glad I watched it but wouldn't bother again.

One of Eddie's best, he has been disappointing lately for at least 10 years now, except for Daddy Day Care, but this tops most of them. Well done! Espcially the contrast between adaptation and romance. Most movies over do the Romance.

Not an Eddie Murphy fan, but found this to be a quite a funny and enjoyable film. Yes it isn't profound and it does get a little cheesy but it was certainly something that was a little more original than most of the comedies doing the rounds at the moment. 3 1/2 stars for me.

Despite the reviews this film got when it was released, its actually not too bad. Sure you won't find yourself laughing out loud for 90 minutes, but there are quite a few chuckles throughout which should have everyone smiling. Eddie is his usual comedic self as Dave Ming Cheng, set out to save his peoples planet the only way he can. The story is simple and harmless enough, the acting is great and the FX are also great. I gave it 3/5 for being fun.

I am going to give this three stars for Eddie Murphy's fun performance in the lead role, as both the spaceship and the captain thereof (or therein). The intial scenes where he is learning to walk and miminking people's facial expressions are hilarious. It does get a bit cheesy, but it is a very good kid's movie with a good message and plenty of laughs. The makers of Fred Claus should've watched this to see how an entertaining children's movie should be done.

This is a cute little movie with a basic plotline. It definitely had some funny moments and also some really touching ones. Worth a watch if you're in the mood for something light hearted and aren't concerned for a deep plotline.

Not a bad movie for a kid's movie. However, there isn't much in it for those who are not a kid at heart. For those who enjoy this sort of thing though, it is well worth a look.

I put this on my list as the trailers were hilarious. However I was very very disappointed with the movie. Even the trailers which were funny, once in the context of the movie lost its hilarity. It was a great concept that just didn't hit its mark. Only for the kids.

This movie is shockingly bad. Waste of time and effort. I struggled through the first 10minutes of watching and ended up leaving it on for background noise while I read a book. Eddie Murphy is a has been and really should have quit making movies while he was ahead. Don't waste your time with this one...

Very interesting concept and set-up, but the problem is the movie largely misses the mark. This is probably due to hammy acting and some less than subtle over-the-top humour. Eddie Murphy was actually quite good in this movie, but let down by some of the supporting cast.

This is a star turn by Eddie Murphy (although nowhere near Beverly Hills Cop) with a cruel imitation (when playing the captain) of Star Trek's Patrick Stewart - together with his clipped English accent - the film would have been OK if it wasn't for all the others in it and the crap story line.

Its been a long time since Hollywood put out a good, funny family movie that wasn't animated (probably nothing since the 80s in fact). I got this for myself but then sat down and watched it again with my young kids the following day. Well worth a watch - particularly if you have kids.

Excellent move. I liked the concept of the spaceship being a man. Eddie Murphy 's movements and expressions as the spaceship were very entertaining. I liked it as some of it was unpredictable. Worth seeing at least once!
