A slow moving movie that took a long time to reach a climax, although at least it managed to achieve one in the end. The plot seemed to be following a standard "violent movie" formula that we have become de-sensitised to, but the final scenes were disturbing and unique. I will remember this movie, although I can't really say that I enjoyed watching it.

I liked this movie, or what I saw of it. DVD stuffed up about 1/2 hr near the end. It was violent & you must watch to understand the storyline. All I can say is some humans are sick. This isnt a typical horror, more like a journey & if you dont like violence you wont like this movie...

This film was very confronting. A very different horror film. Don't go into this movie expecting a gore/horror film like Saw or Hostel.

An awesome film well acted and directed. Frontiers was more brutal but this film proves torture flicks don't have to be pointless and dull as there was an interesting sub plot behind the story. It is however hard to watch in places.

Powerful and emotional, more than just a shock horror film, it sent me on an visceral roller coaster. A masterpiece.

This is a dark, twisted and thoroughly though-provoking film. First and foremost it's a thinking person's horror movie - so if you're just after blood and gore, skip this and head straight for a trusty slasher flick! But if you're prepared to sit through what is a pretty disturbing movie to be slapped in the face by an amazing climax, then this is for you. I've watched a lot of horror movies, and this is one of the few that have really stuck with me. It's days after and I'm still thinking about it, haunted by one of the most horrifying images I have seen on film.

i love horror and gore, but after watching this i was wondering why i didn't like it. Then i realized, it was horror and gore without the entertainment. It was just all pointless and leaves you feeling depressed. Not worth your time to watch it.

Disturbing and also somewhat engrossing. Like a car wreck you can't look away.

Sick, disturbing and depraved. How anyone could enjoy watching this sick stuff is beyond me. Not my idea of a horror movie, seeing people beaten and abused. I couldn't watch it to the end. Very strange movie

Definitely not for the squeamish! The idea is original and thought-provoking, the violence and gore is over the top. The plot twist half way through is unreal. The ending is SHOCKING. The only complaint is that the movie dragged on for too long and repeats too much towards the end, otherwise it is one of the most terrifying horror films I've ever, EVER seen.

Brilliant film. Amazingly made and utterly gripping. Definitely one of the best thought provoking horror films I've ever come across. Very few movies stay with me for days after watching but Martyrs isn't easily forgotten.

This movie isn't like regular horror movies where they concentrate on blood shed. Yes there is alot of blood ... but I liked how it was shed in a more 'realistic way' than other horror films. By that I mean that once people are shot, they are shot - they're dead - they fall very coldly to the floor and do not get up. When the family at the start are being chased by Lucie, it doesn't drag on for 20 minutes like the scene in Human Centipede where the evil doctor is trying to recapture one of the girls. I like how this movie switches at the start from a typical horror/revenge movie to a whole other storyline! This movie was actually quite good... but I do think that it was probably one of the best films I've ever seen ... and one of the goriest! I actually shed a tear at one point where Anna realises that she has no hope in surviving and just takes the beatings, and after they cut her hair off she just cries :(

this film is certainly not for the weak stomachs. Not sure I'd call it horror though, although the first 40 minutes are in the horror vein it then changes and becomes very graphic and a realistic torture film (had to half look away a few times) then changes tack again and you realise what the torture has been intending to reveal to the 'team members'........makes you think, stick with it but be warned it is not pleasant viewing at times. I've given it a 3 star but if there were 1/2 stars I'd give it a 3.5

Although there were some decent graphic scenes, the movie was pretty pointless and quite predictable. How could you not see Anna getting captured????

I must admit that I spent a lot of this movie thinking "Why did I rent this?" It was not something I would choose to watch. Having said that, the story changed quite dramatically at several points, and you are guessing where it will go at all times, although some parts are slow or just not moving on. Very graphic violence and abuse scenes, although gladly nothing sexual. The last 10 minutes is very thought-provoking and entirely unexpected. That made it all worthwhile for me, and the realisation that it was actually very well made overrode all the seemingly (at the time) pointless gory bits. If I were to show someone else I would skip all but 5 mins of the middle 30 odd mins of abuse.

Setting new boundaries that transcend the genre, Pascal Laugier's Martyrs is one of the best films I have seen in a very long time. Real empathy for the protagonists and an incredible edge-of-the-seat plot that draws one in. Hard going at times ~ Don't expect to cruise through this with a bag of popcorn.

A great movie that deserves a lot of respect. It is the best horror/thriller movie i've seen in a long time and it is easily in the top five along with the exorcist. Fans of the black and white 1940s and 1950s gore movies this is what you have been waiting for. It's the ultimate gore in colour with a really good twist. I would disagree with anyone who says the movie was boring and the change in storyline halfway makes the movie all the more interesting and exciting. The movie is not anyones type and some people might find it too much to handle however for others it is what we have been waiting for since the exorcist. 99 minutes of worthy footage

A one of a kind movie. The idea is very novel and exciting which combines horror and gore which very much suits fans of the 1950s horror movies. I haven't enjoyed a horror/thriller movie as much since the exorcist and although the exorcist remains my number 1 but this movie is easily in my top five horror genres. A great movie!

I might be the nly one in or out of step. I found "Martyrs" repellent, the violence gratuitous and to my mind not all that well acted. I admit I expected a police procedural but this went way beyond that. Well made but ultimately unsympathetic. I lost interest before the end.

A truly horrifying movie. The original concept behind this movie combined with its tension and gore (which I thought necessary in the context of the movie) to make this one of the best horror films to have been released in years. I found myself unable to turn away until the sickening and thought-provoking finale.

Weird! French flick (english subtitles), ultra violent with gory scenes, I felt a bit let down once the twist and the real bad guys that I will call "The Weirdos" are revealed. The first hour is full of tension however not great. Quite a lot of weakness indeed then the second part feels heaps long. Repeating scenes, from violent to even more violent. Some good ideas here and there but certainly not enough to make Martyrs a great movie. For a 99 minutes movie, I felt bored and I was almost ready to fast forward to the next scene because between the scenes where the main character sat on her chair and the scenes were the bald guy bashed her, there's not much happening on the screen. 3 stars for the few good ideas!

An original horror film (which is always welcome in these days of remakes and sequels) but tough viewing, especially the last half hour. A film definitely not for the faint of heart!

This movie is a long movie and not for the squeamish, but half way though the movie completely changes direction and turns into a completely different story! very different, thought provoking with alot of mixed emotions! only downfall is it leaves you with questions.
