Science fiction writer, David Gordon (John Cusack) is feeling alone after losing his wife two years earlier. David is weighing the possibility of adopting a six-year old orphan boy named Dennis (Bobby Coleman). There is only one thing that may prevent the adoption from happening, and that is Dennis believes he is from the planet Mars. David's sister, Liz (Joan Cusack), tries to talk him out of adopting a child, because he doesn't know the first thing about parenting and this child is over the line and very strange. David has made up his mind and wants to be a father to this strange Martian child. David is having so much fun being a parent that he has stop writing and is about to miss his next book deadline. His agent Jeff (Oliver Platt) tries to bring David back to earth, but David is thinking about Mars more and more. David is letting Dennis be himself, and he is caught up in the fantasy of Dennis actually being from Mars.

Loved this gorgeous movie! The 'martian child' actor was just adorable. John Cusack played a sensitive, yet poignant part as the adoptive father. A great watch for children too :))

Nice to see a movie based on a true story that - despite being different from the truth - still apparently has the writer's approval. Slowish, but really a nice story about actually choosing to do good things and to love a child who may appear difficult, but who is, of course, worth the effort.

Very cleaver and beautiful movie about some wonderfully written people This is a must see for anyone with even the smallest amount of a soft side. Never has family been shown so beautifly before now and never has a child been cuter.

The speel about this movie covers the story but I was amazed to find it's based on a true story. It does illustrate some problems parents face when they allow the child to 'be himself' - which is not easy when you're a kid and don't know who you are. Kids are just learning to be people and need guidance. In this movie it's hard to tell who is the kid and who is the foster father. Also, I wonder why everything has to be said in whispers. These days movie people seem to think the bad guys shout and the good guys whisper. You need to sound way up for this movie. Worth seeing.

Quite an impressive performance from the youngster and John Cusack was pretty reliable but we really wanted the kid to be a Martian in the end. It was okay but not something we really enjoyed. Not very memorable.

I absolutely loved this movie. It's very quiet and slowly paced and could even be accused of being sappy but somehow - probably thanks to a perfect performance by John Cusack - it captivated me. I've re-watched this a few times and fall for it a little more with each viewing. If only John Cusack would adopt me... or at least take me home for a pet.
