LOW LEVEL VIOLENCE

Director: John Ford
Actors: John Wayne, James Stewart, Lee Marvin, Edmond O'Brien, Andy Devine, Vera Miles, Ken Murray

Ranking with Stagecoach as one of the greatest of its genre, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is the modern-day western to beat all westerns. John Ford, whose very name is synonymous with "westerns," directed the ideal cast. Jimmy Stewart plays the bungling but charming big-city lawyer determined to rid the fair village of Shinbone of its number one nuisance and bad man: Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). And as if all that weren't enough, the biggest star that ever aimed a six-shooter plays the Man of the title: John Wayne. Super sincere Stewart and rugged rancher Wayne also share the same love interest (Vera Miles). One gets the gunman, but the other gets the gal.

One of those Westerns that are languid in the extreme with very little plot. The development of character becomes so tedious that one can't wait for the inevitable shoot-out.

This movie could well go down as THE classic western. The acting is totally top notch and bad dudes like Lee Marvin really did infest the Old West. Decency wins out in the end and the bad guys go down. Timeless story, just happens to be in 19th century western U.S.A. this one.

A classic western directed by the master of the genre. John Ford eschews his customary romanticised view of the old west and shows it for the brutal, lawless place it was. The film is set in the town of Shinbone and told in flashback by Jimmy Stewart's character. Stewart, now an esteemed senator, tells the story of when he first came to Shinbone as a young man. The town is ruled by the gun and ignorance and violence go hand in hand. The great John Wayne stars as a typical man of the west who trusts his gun to survive. Jimmy Stewart is a lawyer who comes to town with ideas of bringing law and order. Lee Marvin is the psychotic hired gun, Liberty Valance. These three leads, each representing the passing of an era, supported by Ford's wonderful and familiar stock actors are perfect. Highly recommended

The plot was a bit floppy and apart from the 3 main characters the acting was appalling. An OK film if you don't have anything else to do.
