This is a great performance by Maximilian Schell. I saw this when it was first released and it still hasn't lost it's compelling intrigue of a hagridden personality. Worthy of watching again over time.

The years certainly haven't dimmed the power of Maximillian Schell's Oscar winning performance here! Though other performances are also strong, this film is almost a "one man show". Schell gives an amazing performance of a man tormented by the guilt of death and survival. A film to be watched more than once, to catch all the nuances of the script and the ideas it portrays. An excellent translation from stage to screen.
