A gallery of high-living lowlifes will stop at nothing to get their sweaty hands on a jewel-encrusted falcon. Detective Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) wants to find out why - and who'll take the fall. This third screen version of Dashiell Hammett's novel is a film of firsts: John Huston's directorial debut, rotund Sydney Greenstreet's screen debut, film history's first film noir and Bogart's break-through role after years as a Warner contract player. An all-star cast (including Greenstreet, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre and Elisha Cook Jr.) join Bogart in this crisply written sizzler the placed in the top quarter of the American Film Institute's 100 Greatest American Films list. Many say it's the best detective drama ever. Each time you see it, you'll find it hard to disagree.

A classic! Deserves all the accolades. A must see if you like 'Boggy'!

Slick dialogue and great performances; but bad music and anachronistic misogyny. Mainstream-style classic, lacking grit - more charcoal-grey than noir.

"It's the stuff dreams are made of." This work is cinematic par excellence and one of the most memorable films starring Humphrey Bogart. This is a movie which fits well into the hard-boiled detective and mystery genres and is well worth several viewings at the very least.

A true classic. One of Bogarts best. Some timeless PI one liners.

Loved it. The acting is brilliant, the plot full of unexpected twists, there is no gratuitous violence and unnecessary loud noise. This movie has CLASS!

Classic Humphrey Bogart, in a Sam Spade who-dunnit...if you can ignore the dated production techniques, it's still a very engaging yarn.
