Pampered and provided for at New York’s Central Park Zoo, life couldn’t be better for Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe and Gloria the Hippo. They’ve lived all their lives in captivity, been served good meals every day and visited by an adoring public.
Things are about to change.
Marty (voiced by Chris Rock) is curious about the world beyond their idyllic surroundings and escapes with the help of a group of penguins. Alex (Ben Stiller), Melman (David Schwimmer) and Gloria (Jada Pinkett-Smith) go after him, but their life on the outside comes to an abrupt end when they are rounded up and shipped off to Africa where they will be set free.

This was highly enjoyable. Very cute and clever. Animation was great and the actors who leant their voices were fantastic. Not just for kids as most adults will find 'Madagascar' also appealing.
I'm looking forward to seeing the sequel.

One made for littlies, that the biggies can also not just endure, but actually enjoy! A special favourite are the penguins, and of course the lemur king doing the "i like to move it" song.

Very easy, fun movie to watch. Lots of laughs, the voices supplied by Ben Stiller, Chris Rock and David Schwimmer are not the typical animal voices, but work well. The highlight for me though was the no-nonsense commando penguins.

The kids will probably love it - but unlike some other recent films for children, this offers little for adults. It has almost none of the charm and cleverness of "Finding Nemo". The trademark of that story was the way the animators made the real-life quirks of the animals into trade mark characteristics - you could still believe Dory was a fish and the sharks were sharks! Alex and company are just human characters transposed over cartoon animal bodies - boring!! However, there is one exception - the penguins. These little guys do achieve "Nemo" type brilliance.

I was so looking forward to watching this movie, having missed it on the big screen and with so many of my friends giving it a good rap. However I was pretty disappointed in the end. Why? I think animations should be left to Pixar - the guys who really are funny all the way through a movie. Madagascar had a few very good one-liners but that was about it really. David Schwimmer was just an animated version of the pathetic loser he played in friends and was rarely funny. The funniest characters were the penguins, but more for their antics than what they said. Sorry to those who thought it was brilliant - it just didn't do it for me.
