Well worth a watch. Some of the 40 year old "special effects" are gold. Pretty edgy for an Aussie film given it's age.
Although the film perhaps was a small budget, I think it adds to the feel of the movie, as it's set in the outback in 1800s Australia. Dennis Hopper did a great job as David Morgan and I think this movie was really good and worth watching.
Ok, great, we learnt there was this guy David Morgan who turned rebel and was then persecuted by the Australian police at the time. So that's the historical interest of the film, and pretty much the only interesting aspect about it.
Everything else about this film smells of amateurism, pretention (aiming at an epic production and missing by miles), lack of skills, both from the actors -all actors- and every part of the film crew: -very- badly acted, pityful special effects, leading-nowhere script, redundant details, terrible pictures, poor soundtrack etc ... Get ready to waste your time watching this. It is a regretable exception to the otherwise creative and blooming australian film industry.
And, no, its age (filmed in 1976) is no excuse ...
Not sure. It has its good moments and its bad. Worth a watch, but don't expect too much.
Very enjoyable film, and Dennis Hopper is spectacular in the title role. A pretty offbeat picture made on a fairly low budget, though it has a great cast. One of the most important Australian films, pretty violent and has some great shots of the Aussie outback. Not a perfect film, however. Its editing seems a little cheap and rushed, and doesn't play like a perfectly fluid film. Some characters also seem a little farcical, and some scenes don't quite fit in to the story. However, there is a lot to like about this film, an iconic piece of Australian genre filmmaking, and well worth a rental.
Pretty mediocre offering which fails to create any form of dramatic tension. Hopper goes through the motions and characters come and go. A curio more than anything. 2.5 stars
I had previously rented this movie and rated it as pathetic. However I subsequently re-rented it and on this occasion I re-rate this movie as great. It is quite violent but it depicts the era very well. Don't know why I viewed it so poorly on the first occasion. Recommend this movie to all who seek realism in movies.
I think the one who cut this film was also mad.
