“My name is Salmon, like the fish. I was fourteen years old when I was murdered.” Based on the best seller by Alice Sebold, The Lovely Bones tells the story of a murdered young girl, the quest to find her killer and Susie’s passage into the hereafter. Directed by Peter Jackson and starring Rachel Weisz, Mark Wahlberg, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci (unlucky to lose out at the Oscars for his sinister turn as Mr Harvey) and newcomer Saoirse Ronan, this film is a heartbreaking visual treat. Bonus Features (Blu-ray only) include a feature length making-of documentary presented as a diary of the actual film shoot. Presented and narrated by Peter Jackson this is an intricate look at the film making process.

Peter Jackson is no stranger to the pressures of adapting a book to film. His last effort at such a task earned him a number of Academy Awards, millions of dollars at the box office and the rare feat of bringing new fans to the property whilst also satisfying the original devotees. He, along with collaborative screenwriter Fran Walsh, understands that elements of the original source must be changed during the adaptation to film. However, he also appreciates the importance of replicating the spirit of the source material. This was evident during each and every installment of the Lord of the Rings series. It is not at all evident in his interpretation of Alice Sebold’s bestselling novel The Lovely Bones, a film about spirits seemingly without one of its own.

Fans of Sebold’s novel (a category which I happily classify myself as part of) have always known that a film adaptation of The Lovely Bones could be overwhelmingly breathtaking to behold. We also knew that it would be a near impossible feat to pull off. Not that there can’t be good book-to-film adaptations; lord knows there are plenty of them. And The Lovely Bones isn't exactly a complex book; it just doesn’t exactly cater to the medium of film. It is cinematically unfriendly. The third act takes the reader in a very unexpected direction; a direction that only works in relation to the deliberate pacing of the first two acts. Sebold holds it together. Jackson doesn’t even take the risk; he mashes the book into a bite-sized, easy-to-swallow treat and subsequently forgets what the book was all about in the first place.

Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan) is a fourteen-year-old girl with a crush on a handsome boy, a fixation on photography and a deep love for her family, including her father (Mark Wahlberg), mother (Rachel Weisz), grandmother (Susan Sarandon) and younger brother and sister (Christian Thomas and Rose McIver). She’s a happy girl and they are a happy family; but sometimes terrible things happen to good people. One day she is stopped on the way home from school by Mr. Harvey (Stanley Tucci), an odd but unremarkable man who wants to show her the underground fort he has made in the middle of the local cornfield. Susie is young, curious and eager. She climbs down into the fort and is murdered at the hands of Mr. Harvey (the crime is far more nefarious and graphically detailed in the book).

Susie discovers that death is in fact not the end. Her spirit emerges from the underground fort and enters back into the real world, eventually passing on to another spiritual plane; not quite Heaven or Earth, but somewhere in-between. From here, she witnesses her family dealing with her death, their struggle to move on, and their frustrating hunt for the killer. It’s a premise that dances very closely to movie-of-the-week triteness. Although Sebold managed to avoid such corniness with her matter-of-fact prose, Jackson dives head-first into the saccharine melodrama of it all. Characters wail; they curse the heavens and howl “noooooo” into the sky. In quieter moments they delicately address one another and speak of the possible “in-between place” that Susie inhabits, while strings swell triumphantly in the background over an angelic choral singer. You half expect the love theme to Titanic to strike up at any moment.

Jackson has equipped himself with a cast and crew perfectly capable of delivering an excellent movie. You would imagine the fact that they were working with such an intriguing premise and such rich source material to only enhance the quality of the project. Sadly, Jackson’s film never had a chance. It is the very bones of his Lovely Bones that were broken from the beginning. The script carelessly compresses the decades-long events of the book into fleeting moments. For the sake of brevity I assume, but at the cost of emotional engagement. Susie’s family undergoes such overwhelming changes of personality at seemingly every turn; they make life-changing decisions based on information that the audience is not given (nor can they even infer). Worst of all, the script overlooks the heart of the book (Susie’s family) and instead focuses on the hunt for the killer.

The talented cast struggles with, and is eventually failed by, the material. They are not aided by their director either, who seemingly stood slightly off screen and urged them to “act bigger!” Saoirse Ronan and Stanley Tucci fare worst, but perhaps only because they are given the most screen-time. Susie never seems like a young girl, but instead an angelic, breathy soothsayer. Mr. Harvey meanwhile is presented like a minstrelsy sex predator; upon meeting him, no one could ever conceivably doubt that he is guilty of murder.

Just to reiterate, I don’t place the blame on the cast, but instead Jackson. He needs the performances to be big so that they don’t get swallowed by the special effects, particularly during the sequences that take place at Susie’s “in-between place”. Interestingly, shooting briefly halted back in 2008 when Jackson and the film’s art director disagreed over the film’s depiction of the afterlife. I guess the art director wasn’t a fan of What Dreams May Come, because that is the world that Jackson has created here. There are glimpses of boundless imagination, but they are suffocated by the nauseatingly over-sentimental depiction of life after life. It’s like getting a syringe full of sugar right into your forehead. Peter Jackson is a talented filmmaker, and his cast is made up of fine actors. I look forward to their next films. Alice Sebold’s novel is all about life (and death) lessons. Hopefully, Jackson has learnt his.

2/5

Well it wasn't terrible but The Lovely Bones is the worst misinterpretation of a novel ever! Alice Sebold must be fuming. Peter Jackson takes out all the softness and beauty of the novel and replaces it with a Willy Wonka-like after life complete with wacky music montage. He also throws in a totally inappropriate kooky Susan Sarandon music interlude that is SO out of place I nearly stopped watching. Yes it's a sad tale but over use of special effects isn't going to stop it being any less sad. I've given it 3 star for Saorsie Ronan who is absolutely sublime as Suzy Salmon. The overriding message of the movie is still there though - never let you teen go anywhere with a man they don't know - even if it is your neighbour.

A very impressive piece of film making. Loved the strong emotional connections between the characters. Loved the suspense. Loved the visual treatment of the in-between afterlife which gave such a powerful sense of Susie Salmon being 'stuck' and of her inability to affect 'real' events except through concentrated emotion. A great cast particularly Saoirse Ronan & Stanley Tucci. Many U.S. critics said the film mis-interpreted the book. Not having read the book I can't make a comparison but I suspect Peter Jackson pisses the parochial Yanks off simply because he isn't one.

Oh dear. Peter Jackson manages to turn an over-hyped book into an even less deserving film. Any film with a narrative like The Lovely Bones should pack an emotional punch, at the very least. Instead we get the cinematic equivalent of fairy-floss with some rather odd depictions of the afterlife and an increasingly dazed looking Mark Wahlberg thrown in for good measure. Some good performances from Tucci and Ronan can't stop this one drowning in it's own syrupy sentimentality.

i really enjoyed this title, (bit tear-jerky at times) but allround very thought provoking, not boring and kept you wondering (i thought). I compare this to the likes of 'what dreams may come', (sort of). This title tends to have same traits (storyline). Overall very enjoyable watch and is recomended (for adults of course)

Overall it was ok - it romanticised her death a little too much and we felt this took away from the raw emotion of the movie. It would have been better without all the special (and somewhat silly) effects and just concentrate on the family's grief with her voiceover.

I was surprised to find out Peter Jackson directed this. It's a beautifully and artfully directed movie. The topic is awful with a truly chilling villain, made all the more so because of a very classy decision not to show too much. I was really dreading having to see any morbid details but it was tastefully left out. Less is definitely more! Fabulous acting from everyone and a very touching movie.

Stanley Tucci was nominated for an Oscar for his role, but I think Saoirse Ronan should have been for hers. She doesn't do the typical, cliched "child actor" things other children do (too-obviously-fake sobs when crying, difficulty making sustained eye contact in scenes). She really conveyed every different emotion to me convincingly. I thought the special effects were beautiful. I don't believe in any kind of afterlife, but I still got lost in the "hereafter" concept. And Mark Wahlberg was palatable for a change...actually quite moving as the grieving father.

This movie is apparently based on a best selling book. How that book ever sold more than 2 copies is beyond me. This movie was not at all my cup of tea - lots of stuff about the murdered girl going to heaven. The storyline itself, about the murderer wasn't so bad, but all the supernatural stuff made it really awful.

This film leaves you with an uneasy feeling - it can be quite disturbing to watch. I thought that it was repetitive in places and overstated the obvious in others. Those sequences in "purgatory" were stunning but too long and tedious. I thought Peter Jackson was too self-indulgent at times. A good film editor could have tightened this movie and made it great.

Intriguing film, with such different treatment, the use of cgi (visually wonderful) for "purgatory", as the place where the dead girl stays before she can move on to a higher plane, Her voice narrating and telling her story in the beginning of the film, after she has been murdered. The film is interestingly interwoven with the points of view of the family and the dead girl in purgatory and them both trying to connect and resolve the situation before they can all move on with the "new lives". There ares some strange scenes that perhaps weren't necessary, and that you have to wonder about, but overall a well crafted film in all respects, and visually beautiful. Provokes a lot of thoughts and questions. Recommended viewing.

I loved the book and was looking forward to loving the movie. What I wasn't expecting was a Magical Mystery Tour of heaven. In the sublime book, Susie is looking earthwards, watching her family from wherever she is, making achingly beautiful observations about the lives of her family and gaining insights she never had while alive. In the movie, her perspective is heaven focussed and we are forced to sit through interminable sequences which reveal that being dead is being stuck in an afterlife that looks like it was designed by Willy Wonka. Somehow Peter Jackson as turned a touching and soulful glimpse into the beauty of the ordinary and the familiar into a technicolour travelogue for heaven. I will be doing all I can to block out these images and to remember the book that I read and loved.

Very interesting concept for the movie. Reminds me of a movie with Robyn Williams and Cuba Gooding Jnr. Pity it could create copy-cat killers, or give people ideas about it. The bad guy got it in the end, thank goodness. Good acting by all concerned. Worth a watch if you are a Peter Jackson fan.

If you are religious or otherwise believer in fantasy then this movie is for you. Otherwise don't bother. Even without the supernatural the story lacks credibility. It is well enough acted however. Its really an adults kids movie. Not my cup of tea. Was expecting something deeper and more thoughtful and not so superficial.

I loved this movie, I thought it was so sad but is a situation that started years and years ago, and will continue on forever and ever, which is also sad. I do not really get into movies about the hereafter as I find them too involved, but I thought it was a movie that I could follow easily. It was a pity they did not find her body, but in the end, the bad person got his "just deserts", which should and usually happens, even in real life.

This film was lucky I even gave it one star. It earned the star because it managed to get me to watch the whole thing through to the end out of gross fascination to see how they would finish it. Of course once it was over I was left feeling annoyed that I watched any of it at all. I found it hard to sympathise with the little girl because I found her character irritating. The film relied heavily on symbolism and it was executed poorly. I don't even have words to describe this abomination. Please don't watch it if you have children as it will only leave you feeling warped.

I found the movie a bit had to follow in some segments where it was really slow, otherwise it was a good storyline, found the ending a bit disappointing with how the "baddy" dies.

Yet another movie that fails to live up to the book. It could have been so much more.....If only Peter Jackson had paid more attention the story and less trying to 'wow" audiences, then it could have been so much better. Very disappointing.

This film was well done. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone that hasn't seen the film yet, I highly recommend this film if you like drama that leaves a big lump in your throat.

I'm sorry, but Peter Jackson must have been on drugs when he directed this. The movie has no soul at all. I should have cared about this poor girl but I couldn't get past the awful plot set up which makes little sense. The characters are boring, nothing seems realistic at all - Peter Jackson even makes quite an obvious and self indulgent 'cameo' for what seemed a eternity in a scene at a cemera shop.. I was angry that I paid money to see this in a cinema, if I'd just watched it on TV for free I would have just turned it off after ten minutes.

The book is apparently better then the movie, but I enjoyed the movie excluding the parts were she is dancing on a circle made from grass in a hippy dress which makes this film a little childish considering that she is 14 years old in the movie. The acting was good the story line was strange but good the movie had an everything worked out even though the family did nothing kind of ending.

I enjoyed this movie, sad story about a 14yr old girl who gets murdered - yes there are parts that shoud have been taken out, parts that were stupid and didn't need to be in there but overall it was a good movie - I think it is worth a watch - especially if you have children - instill the stranger danger !

I read the book a few years ago and totally loved it. The movie isn't as good as the book (I find the happens a lot with movies made from books), but it's still emotional. I'd recommend you read the book and then watch the movie.

I thought this was a very beautifully filmed piece of work, and really enjoyed it. Visually and musically stunning, but the big stars of the film had little to do next to Saoirse Ronan.

Hmmm, im not sure if i liked it or was dissapointed. The book was great however the translation onto screen left alot to be desired. Mark Wahlbergs acting for me was the saving grace, he stole the show! I found the flicking between reality and not very annoying, yet its the basis of the story. Left unsure but it was worth watching once. Second half does improve.

You really have to see it to believe it. The worst most cheesy scenes, drawn out for what seemed hours. Everything you could think of wrong with a movie was wrong with this. Peter Jackson can only direct hobbits b/c the poor humans in this had nothing to work with. The script was woeful, there was no plot. No character development. The editing was ridiculous and didn't make any relevance to telling a story. There was a story there but Peter Jackson failed to actually tell one which seems like the basic point of film making. The CGI was pointless and so over done you felt like smashing the tv.

We have read the book and found this to be quite a faithful adaptation. It is not an easy movie to watch though, with many scenes disturbing and confronting in equal measure. Strong performance from Soarise Ronan and a good effort from Mark Wahlberg. Found Rachel Weisz was under-utilised and Susan Sarandon a bit over the top. An original story beautifully shot. Stanley Tucci is incredibly creepy as Mr Harvey and could not believe this was the same man that was so likeable as Julia's husband in "Julie and Julia".

This movie made me sad. Not because of the story, but because of Peter Jackson's demolition of it. If you've read the book - don't see this disappointment of a movie. I've been a big fan of PJ's work in the past but it's almost as if he decided to use up his budget with his overblown and completely unnecessary CGI depiction of the "in-between" - the place where the story's narrator is trapped while she looks down on her family fracturing and re-connecting following her murder. The constant shifting back to the in-between and the self-indulgent lengths of these scenes removes any sense of narrative flow and fails to add to the story. One of the worst films I've seen in a long time for the sheer conceit and lack of restraint shown by the film-maker. This should have - could have - been so much better. The performances were solid, especially Saoirse Ronan as Susie Salmon and Stanley Tucci as Mr Harvey. Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz weren't given enough material to develop their characters, unfortunately, and the wild grandmother character, played by Susan Sarandon, was almost incidental in the movie, but was much more detailed in the book. One star from me. And that's being generous.

A great movie, one of the best I,ve seen in a while . Its sad , beautiful, touching and the ending is very satisfying for a change. The supernatural aspect is handled in a different way to usual menacing murder scene without the gore, o0r even ther murder. loved it. worth seeing .

Very moving film about how a family copes or does not cope with the tragic murder of a child/sibling seen through the eyes of the murdered child. A bit fractured in places , I have no real concept of what Susan Sarandon's part as the grandmother was really . Or maybe I just missed something . Well worth a watch though.
