Brent (Xavier Samuel) has never really recovered from the night of his car crash. Australia, we need to talk. I’m no psychiatrist, but I think it’s time you and I discussed these … movies you’ve been making. Seriously, what is going on in the imagination of my countrymen and women? Why do they find it so easy to come up with such deranged and demented scenarios for horror films? Think about it. We have a fine history of exploitation flicks that rival those of any nation, and although our film industry may not match the output of the Brits and the Yanks, each year we deliver at least one stomach-churner. Our disturbed villains are arguably more terrifying than any American creations. Consider Mick from Wolf Creek, Patrick from Patrick, and even Jigsaw from the Saw saga. Perhaps it’s time to induct another equally nasty piece of work into the hall of fame. Ladies and gent...

Ladies and gentleman, meet The Loved One’s Lola.

Now Lola (Robin McLeavy) is a girl who really needs a psychiatrist, although I fear it might be too late. It’s the night of the prom and she would like nothing more than to be escorted by the hunky, metal-loving Brent (Xavier Samuel). He politely rebuffs her advances, which is fair enough considering he’s already taking his girlfriend Holly (Victoria Thaine). But Lola is a girl used to getting what she wants, and her daddy (John Brumpton) is sent to kidnap Brent and bring him back to her place for a private prom of their own. Nothing fancy. They’ll share a drink of milk. Flick through some photo albums. She’ll nail his feet to the floor. Awww. Wait, no, the other one. Ewww.

Writer-director Sean Byrne makes one hell (and I mean hell) of a feature film debut with The Loved Ones. It’s slick, confident and wickedly funny. Lola is straight out of Sam Raimi’s nightmares; a terrifying cross between Carrie and Rachel Berry from Glee. However, there is a serious side to proceedings. Brent is dealing with the recent death of his father (for which he blames himself), and his relationship with Holly is the one shining light in his life. And you feel that, thanks to the genuine performances of Samuel and Thaine. There are stakes in this film, which is more than you can say for most thrillers. We’re not simply watching a maddened killer slaughter personality-free teens. We want Brent to find his way back to Holly. And if Lola should pay a horrible price for the physical and emotional torture she bestows upon him in the process, so be it.

Here’s the rub. Lola and her equally unstable father don’t seem to exist in the same universe as the rest of the characters .The picture dances perilously on the border of earnest horror and self-aware satire, and ultimately feels tonally inconsistent. Ultimately, we’re left with two good (but very different) flicks sandwiched together, and the result is less than the sum of its parts. Still, when you have a central performance as hypnotic and - let’s face it – insane as McLeavy’s, it’s hard to care. She. Is. Terrifying. And weird. Decked out in her nauseating pink dress; sculling glasses of milk; cackling disturbingly; dancing too intimately with her father; staring glassy-eyed into her mirror as Kasey Chambers' (now, unnerving) Not Pretty Enough plays on her stereo. That being said, she’s still a more appealing date than the Sex and the City ladies.

3.5/5

Really enjoyed it, was a good concept. Had some good humour in it. I can't stand Aussie films but this one was great. Not sure why people rent horrors then complain that it is disturbing or psychotic... whinge whinge

Hated it. I didn't see the humour at all- just bleak, hopeless and disturbingly psychotic - we turned it off about half way through.

One strange film, this leaves you with a question what is going on in the writer's mind, just odd.

A psychopathic father and daughter seek retribution on those boys who reject her. Aussie violent shocker that doesn’t quite pull it off.

This was done very well. Ignoring whether you like/don't like the genre, it's an awesome Aussie production - well acted and engaging. Kind of Wolf Creek without the stressful "sudden screams" that sometimes come with horror/thriller films. Thinking about the characters (and their history that's NOT shown, just implied) and you will shiver! Great stuff!

I hated Wolf Creek and I hated this. Truly revolting and I really just don't see the point of movies like this. Life's too short and there is already way too much nastiness and cruelty - this is wasted time I will never get back (and I fast forwarded through just about all of it!)

mmm, definitely a horror, thriller film. Great Aussie cast. I struggled watching bits as I found those bits quite gruesome. So consequently I don't know what happened in the end (lol).

A strong Aussie cast, brillant acting and direction that not only crosses Pretty in Pink with Misery but also the theme of the film is loneyless for some of the cast and the airs they put on to find a partner but more often or not the connection simply isnt there. The film wisely aviods overkill on the effects and torture and uses sound effects to a convincing effect. They nearly spilled one plot twist into Lake Dead territory but wisely avioded it at the last minute which helps. An Awesome film and def proves Aussies make awesome horror films when they put in the effort. Best Aussie horror since Wolf creek and Stones of death.

If you love horror you're bound to enjoy this. Nail biting script, creeper characters and imaginative story line with excellent production qualities. Loads of references to other 'classic' horror films. A hard edged black comedy. The director has described his film as a little bit Carrie and a little bit Evil Dead. If you don't like horror you just won't get this excellent Australian film. 5 stars.

being a massive horror genre movie buff, i very much enjoyed watching this humorous, well directed, twisted story of ill-fated teenage love. Xavier Samuel is absolutely fantastic is portraying pain and anger. A true cult classic in the making from a fantastic up and coming Australian director and a solid cast Australian cast.

Imagine Bad Boy Bubby crossed with House of a Thousand Corpses - it might give you some idea - This is a very intense movie. Not for the faint hearted but if you like a bit of good Aussie craziness with some blood thrown in you might like this movie. We loved it. . .

I really enjoyed this film, it's been a while since Australia has brought out a decent horror film so I was really looking forward to this. The Loved Ones wasn't nearly as gory and horrific as reviews had made it out to be. The main actress was excellent, perfectly unhinged. The director did well to create a number of scenes that make the audience feel really uncomfortable.

I was expecting a poor mans Misery at worst or passable black comedy at best and was pleased to find a slick smart high school horror in it's own class. There are genuine moments of sheer horror mixed with a bit of tragedy and just a few laughs, more than enough to suggest Sean Byrne is going to be a film maker to watch out for.

One of the most entertaining Aussie flicks i have ever seen. Congrats on a very very good effort. I'm appreciative of the fact that the Director didnt feel the need to show all the gore at every moment possible, sometimes the sound is more distressing than the act, (youll see what i mean) this only adds to the film, having said that there is some unsettling stuff in there, but if you've sat through Saw & Hostel you will be fine Also the way that the movie keeps its lightheartedness is exceptional and while there are no real laugh out loud moments the "Pretty in Pink" hoamge keeps the movie fresh and compelling. Great acting all round, good soundtrack and a movie defenitely worthy of the hype it has received. Part Pretty in Pink, part Wolf Creek, part wrath of a woman scorned, Party on !!
