The Best Picture of 1945 has lost none of its bite or power in this uncompromising look at the devastating effects of alcoholism. Ironically, this brilliant Billy Wilder film was almost never released because of poor reaction by preview audiences unaccustomed to such stark realism from Hollywood, but the film has since gone on to be regarded as one of the all-time great dramas in movie history.

Ray Milland's haunting portrayal of a would-be writer's dissatisfaction with his life leads him on a self-destructive three-day binge. Filled with riveting imagery, the multiple Academy Award-winner offers an unforgettable view of life on the edge.

Made in the 40's but still relatable today> Billy Wilder is a genius.

Brilliantly acted by lead - plays it altogether too well. If you ever wanted to know what living around an alcoholic is like - this gets it down to a tee.

A classic dealing with a serious topic, chronic alcoholism. After a few drinks Milland's characters' imagination soars and he his is ready to take on the world. But the downside is as rapid. Great performance by Milland. 4.5 stars

After seeing a snippet in 'Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid' I've always wanted to see this film. If you like Film Noir it's a don't miss. Ray Miland is perfect as the scheming drunk always searching for his next drink. The ending is far from believable after all the gritty realism of his alcohol addiction.

Wow. A great film that is such a powerhouse experience - alcohol and its social dominance. Ray Milland deserved the many awards for acting. See it.
