Olive is a little girl with a dream: winning the Little Miss Sunshine contest. Her family wants her dream to come true, but they are so burdened with their own quirks, neuroses, and problems that they can barely make it through a day without some disaster befalling them. Olive's father Richard is a flop as a motivational speaker, and is barely on speaking terms with her mother. Her uncle Frank, a renowned Proust scholar, has attempted suicide following an unsuccessful romance with a male graduate student. Her brother Dwayne, a fanatical follower of Nietzsche, has taken a vow of silence, which allows him to escape somewhat from the family whose very presence torments him. And Olive's grandfather is a ne'er-do-well with a drug habit, but at least he enthusiastically coaches Olive in her contest talent routine. Circumstances conspire to put the entire family on the road together with the goal of getting Olive to the Little Miss Sunshine contest in far off California.

Loved this movie! A very accurate depiction of the family road trip and Alan Arkin is so funny and entertaining to watch. With a lovable cast (except for Greg Kinnear) this is a great story. Unfortunately it wouldn't be suitable for young kids due to excessive bad language but for everyone else - must watch!

This is a goofy but engaging comedy with extreme but human characters who develop during the course of the movie. The 7-yr-old daughter dreams unrealistically big and the rest of the dysfunctional family, with various levels of enthusiasm, try to make it happen for her. Their road trip is a black comedy unlike others. The other contestants in the pageant are dressed and made up as little adults: truly gross. A bit slapstick at times but there are plenty of laughs, and the girl's drug-addled grandpa gets all the good lines.

This is a typical Yank dysfunctional family using drugs, very foul language, being totally disorganized, and displaying all that is negative. Such thrash should never be written, let alone be distributed as 'film'!

This is an off-beat comedy. I enjoyed and the family although disfunctional felt more real than most movie families. Toni Collete as usual was brilliant and Abigail Breslin is fantastic as the little beauty queen wanabe dancing to super-freak.

What family of individuals thrown together going on a life changing tour to L.A. to compete in the Little Miss Sunshine Contest which turns out to be very different to what this contraversial family expected. All are surprised, some even discusted, by the little girls performance. But she steals the show!!!

A decidedly weird family on a road trip. Some of this is hilarious, but at other times the humour fails miserably or is simply cringe-worthy. Toni Collette is believably American, which is a shame!

Comedy was very good. Except I did not like the use of swear words in the movie. The actual script has about 53 four letters word in it. Not really necessary if you have a good script.

Rated M for the language and frequent use of the "f" word but it isn't inappropriate in the context of the story. Enjoyed it but thought that the opportunity was lost to really nail Olive's routine. It was a bit weak and detracted a little from what could have been. Stll, a fun movie.

I loved this. As good as the first time I saw it. The Grandpa cracks me up. Has nothing Disney about it - which is the best part. Steve Carrell is outstanding and the little girl is a real kid. Safe viewing for the family (of older kids/teens if you don't mind the f - bomb now and again.

Ever looked round at your family and thought "how on Earth did I end up with this mob?" Little Miss Sunshine is a road trip movie that brilliantly casts light and shadow on the love that "outshines" any discomfort our family members may cause us. They are, after all, our family and it is them who know and love us best. An Uncle with major depression, a grandpa with a foul mouth (and twisted yet bizarrely clever politics), a Dad who's a wannabe motivational speaker, a brother who has made a vow of silence until he becomes a fighter pilot, and a mum who just wants the best for her daughter. Poor 12 year old Olive, all she wants is the chance to enter a Beauty Pageant half way across America. Will they all make it in time in the VW combi? Darkly humourous, the film's "style" is at times reminiscent of the work of the Cohen brothers; it's quirkiness at times laugh out loud funny. We may not all be Beauty Queens, but the love we have for family Rises above such shallow notions of beauty. In this regard, Little Miss Sunshine positively radiates. Highly recommended.

Fantastic film. Had heard mixed reviews about it but was pleasantly suprised. I love quirky, indie films. Depicts what a real, normal/dysfunctional family goes about their lives. I love the little girl in it Abigail Breslin? She is the star of the show. The grandpa is really funny too. Steve Carrell is great in it. Really funny film. I was crying the whole time I was laughing so much.

2nd. viewing! What a delicious piece of black humour, and superb acting. A better collection of hopeless losers could not be imagined, fed by a story line that milked the maximum from a stressful situation. How does one get humour from the death of a father? This movie did! A srong comment on childrens' beauty contests, so popular in the US. Loved that smarmy contest host, and the erratic car horn kept breaking me up! The conclusion is so funny that-------! A thoroughly enoyable movie, which I could happily view time and time again.

I had high expectations & these were met early with the introduction of each fabulous & quirky character & the hilarious banter between them .. they hit the road & I continued to laugh my head off, then it went kinda off course & I felt let down a bit at the end. But overall it was wonderful & funny & a blast!

The multitude of reviews on this dvd show you the true quality of the film -- I spent most of the movie sobbing as the characters I related to lived through each hysterical situation. Definitely recommended to everyone, makes you think and laugh!

this was ok. Loved the Kombi it reminded us of our old beastie. But the story could have been done better. I really wanted to see this movie but was a little disappointed in it in the end. Found it to be a little boring and the only laugh i got was when they stuff the body in the back of the Kombi. Not one i would like to see again.

What a great movie - all families need to undertake a self discovery tour together - in a combi van. It certainly brought out all kinds of emotions, but most of all smiles. I think the grandfather "went" too soon. He was a real character and was well portrayed by Alan Arkin and put a certain "kick" into the plot. The whole cast worked well together and Toni Collette was outstanding - so natural. Steve Carell was great as the depressed brother and his dry wit and line delivery was superb, as was Paul Dano as the teenage son - those two were definitely connected. Great story line with a dance routine at the end that left me speechless - I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry!!

One of those movies where one minute you are laughing out loud and the next you are crying! A black comedy with some very barbed comments about child beauty pageants. Adorable but entirely kooky characters. The heroin snorting grandad was the most together by a long shot which was refreshing to see in US movie. Great to see Toni Collette show why she is now an internationally acclaimed actress! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
