When aspiring magazine writer Sophie Marcus (Amanda Seyfried) and would-be restaurateur Victor (Gael García Bernal) fly from New York to Italy for a vacation, the stage seems set for some much needed romance in their relationship - especially since their destination is the city of Verona, home of the star crossed lover Juliet Capulet of Romeo and Juliet fame. Sophia joins a group of volunteers who respond to letters that pour into Verona from around the world - letters to Juliet seeking advice about love. One such letter that Sophia responds to dates back to 1951 and came from Claire Smith (Vanessa Redgrave), an Englishwoman who fell in love with a young Italian man in her youth but let the opportunity slip away.

Such a chick flick, which is not my scene at all....I only got it as I wanted to see what Franco Nero looked like these days......a bit over sweetened (no, a lot), and highly predictable. Disappointing

2 stars is all I can manage. Most rom coms are a bit predictable, but this one was only just watchable.

Erk! Estroegen overdose! Alright, Vanessa Redgrave is okay, but she doesn't have to do much. I've read the other reviews, and if you have to rely on the scenery to get you through this, then get a Lonely Planet guide to Italy instead. What does Amanda Seyfried's character even see in Chris Egan's arrogant, pompus English (I think that's what he was trying to do) charmer? Predictable as hell - of course the correct older Italian gent has to arrive on horseback - and sappy. I needed to look at a power tools catalogue after this.

Loved this movie as it was a great '?hick-flick'. Lots of sentimentality and great scenery of Verona, which brought back memories. Vanessa Redgrave was just brilliant, and the supporting cast was believable

Found this a bit overacted although liked the story. A romance for the girls and not one that my husband would have enjoyed. Predictable story line and ending but ok for a rainy day when there is only sport on tv !!

Pretty rubbish, teenage girls might enjoy it or oldies for the scenery. Shame Amanda is such a blank actress, she just doesn't have much in the way of facial expressions!!!

2+ from the wife 2 stars from me and we love Rom/Coms. Cannot believe so many positive reviews. We thought this movie was very very corny (especially the balcony scene) and not a touch on the wonderful NOTEBOOK. There was very limited chemistry between the main actors. Chris EGAN's acting was appalling, and his attempt at an English accent made you cringe. Vanessa Redgrave tried hard but due to her age I think, paused over her lines to much which detracted from her performance. What saved the movie was the wonderful Italian scenery, overall an ordinary night entertainment and not recommended.

THere was so much potential for the movie but they made it very cliche.
Plus that main guy actor looked american but had a really bad british accent.

THE WORST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN!! I usually like romances or romantic comedies but this was truly dreadful. It was so unbelievable and unlikable. The cliches were stupid. Even the Director says in the comentary that the audience at the Preview screening laughed long and loud at a ridiculous scene so they added one line.......l.it didn't help.

I don't normally do chick flicks (give me Star Trek, Jason Bourne any day) but unexpectedly loved this. The scenery is stunning- get me on the next plane to Italy. Get past the improbability of the storyline and you'll enjoy it. My 10year old daughter really liked it too (she likes Amanda from the Mama Mia movie). A lovely change from many of the violent, fast paced and foul-mouthed movies out there.

A nice movie with a good performance by lead actress Amanda Seyfried. The movie had an interesting plot, although the storyline was fairly predictable. The male character, played by Chris Egan was unlikeable and there was definately no chemistry between the 2 young lead actors. The setting of the movie was a nice surprise.

Delightful. For anyone who has visited Italy or wishes to. The film has wonderful sweeps over Tuscan fields, down cobbled streets, very evocative scenery, snippets of Italian language and paced like a holiday's day of exploring. A predictable plot but very pleasant.

I can't remember the last time I was so embarrased for the director of a film......absolute rubbish! The acting from everyone was apalling with Amanda Seyfried looking embarrassed by just being in it. The actor who played the British prat was unlikeable, unskilled and loathsome. It had the potential to be such a wonderful film as the scenery was beautiful and it made me want to go back to Tuscany again......the talent was there, but I suggest a lack of direction was the problem.

Fun light romance set in beautiful Italian countryside.. The main romance with the young couple was a bit bland, but I really enjoyed Vanessa Redgrave's character and her search for her destiny. It's not a great classic but certainly an enjoyable night's viewing.

Awful! The lead, Amanda Seyfried, is okay but that awful blond man is just so unconvincing as a snooty English toff. The characters were wafer thin and there's no development, there's no indication of why she suddenly falls for the cranky Brit. Italy just does not look like that - it's a Disney cartoon version of Italy, there are no cobwebs, no dirt. I swear, the Italy in this film would smell like air freshener. And everyone, EVERYONE wears beige or greige or taupe. I only rented this because I like Gael Garcia Bernal but really, I'd have been better off watching Y Tu Mama Tambien again. This is a waste of his talents. (Okay, I have to admit I knew it would be before I watched it...)

Just brilliant. . . .I have really been looking forward to this movie as I'm becoming a great fan of Amanda Seyfried. This movie surpassed everything I had been expecting, so much more than the usual romance, unique storyline, wonderful acting by the main characters just love the Grandmother Claire, magnificent scenery in the Italian countryside, you can't go wrong in choosing this movie it ticks all the boxes for a great evenings viewing. . . in fact I will keep it another day and watch it again or even buy a copy to keep. Very highly recommended!
