I wouldnt give a big tick for it but was watchable.
I love foreign films, and this is one of the best I've seen in a while. The young hero and heroine are eerily captivating, and the film was beautiful, even if very strange.
The strength of the book was that it carried many storylines unfortunately that is a task too large for a movie as is the case here. Still, this is an an grossing story that is not really about vampires. It addresses early adolescence and generational separation. And it does that well. I can only pity people who won't 'read' a movie. They are missing the very best of world cinema.
was in a different language
Good refreshing take on the vampire story. I really felt for the kids (ie the blood-thirsty vampire girl!). Love a good bully revenge.
i found this to be an incredibly boring movie, i actually didn't even bother to watch the end of it. It was incredibly slow moving and quite monotonous.
They did a really good job of this one. Loved it.
Really strange but really good.
Loved it! Very original, never dull.
Loved it. Hauntingly beautiful.
Beautiful. Atmosphere is amazing.
It's funny to call a vampire film beautiful, but that's how I found it. Vampire movies aren't my thing usually but this movie transcended the genre and stood alone as something of a moviemaking masterpiece. I didn't read the book, but probably will, however unlike Agnes I thought there was a different relationship between Oskar and Eli than there was between Eli and Hakan. Despite all the gore, it was a delicate and touching movie. Something you couldn't really imagine after watching the first ten minutes.
I liked the kids reaction when he seen her naked, lol.
I'm harsh on book adaptations. Translating the written word into visuals is always guaranteed to let people down when it differs from what they see in their mind's eye. But I think in this case, they did an astounding job.
I had read the book previously but watched the movie with a friend who hadn't. It followed the book very closely, although I believe the relationship between Eli and Hakan was left too vague. For someone who hadn't read the book and wasn't aware of the nature of their relationship, it was too easy to incorrectly infer that Oscar was simply a younger Hakan. I'd have preferred a more explicit separation of the two relationships - the book leaves no room for speculation.
4 stars. Lost one because the movie didn't definitively separate the Eli/Hakan and Eli/Oscar relationships.
A very good movie about a mysterious girl who befriends a bullied boy. Haunting winter scenes and horrific murders. The acting is just right - subtle, believable performances that make it easier to believe such an unrealistic scenario. The ending is unexpected and thought-provoking.
Highly recommended.
I didn't even know this was a Swedish film until I sat down to watch it. It was weird in a good way since I'm from Norway so to have a language spoken that's so close to my own was very nice. I think the plot worked out very well. I like vampires. And the actors did an excellent job. It wasn't quite what I expected but overall I'm pleased with the film.
I'm disappointed that some people flat out refuse to watch movies because they are "foreign" and have subtitles. Just looking at the actors in this movie, you would realise that the names don't sound "English", the characters names aren't "English" and if you place the mouse over "more info" it does say that it is a Swedish movie with English subtitles. Sorry if that all sounds harsh, but I think people who ignore these kinds of movies really are missing out... Anyway... This movie is definitely a different kind of vampire movie. Quite slow moving, no fancy special effects or anything. Nothing like Twilight and it's poor acting (although I do love the Twilight books). This focuses more on the friendship between Oskar and Eli and Oskars relationship with the kids at school. I have heard that Hollywood has made a version of this movie, so that should satisfy some people. Would be interesting to see if they keep the movie true to the original.
Drops off in the last 15 mins but the great childhood scenes make this worth watching
A bullied youngster strikes up a friendship with another marginalised youngster who is a vampire. Interesting if somewhat tepid affair that at least tries to take a different approach to the genre. Needed a bit more bite.
Stunning Swedish film about how monstrous children can be - and a child who *is* a monster. It's slow placed, taught, sombre and punctuated by moments of shocking brutality. Unmissable.
a bit slow but no doubt the premise for it still kept me watching, unexpected ending, finally a good vampire movie that is original.
was dissapointed that no where on the advertising said it was a subtitlled movie not happy :(
Unusual film! A bit slow for my liking but was curious enough to watch until the end.
It was ok,a little boring but watched it all the way through as it was different
A die-hard vampire lover (not the sparkly moody kind), I really liked this movie. Nice to have a different take on the vampire genre.
Didn't watch this one as it was a Foreign movie, I do not watch them.
Fantastic, creepy Swedish vampire movie. No glamorous vampires driving sports cars and dating high school girls in this film, it gives a much grimmer look at vampire life and the humans drawn to them. I loved it.
Didn't realise it was subtitled - so off to a bad start. Thought it was slight strange - but then it was okay. Would like a bit more vamping though
This film is so well handled across the the board. Although a vampire movie, Alfredson turns the genre away from cliche horror into a very human drama which is elevated immensely by the two brilliant child actors who are without fault. The connection of the leads is rare and should override some of the revulsion required of a story about blood-drinking that might put off the more squirmish viewer. The best film I have seen in years.
Not interesting at all a big mistake
A very original take on the vampire genre. I loved it! More unsettling than outright scary the film is wonderfully filmed and acted. A hidden gem. Watch the original before the inevitable American remake which is sure to be a poor imitiation.
I had no idea what this movie was about, very different and it was a strange movie that you want to keep watching to find out what happens. You need to be a little weird like me to enjoy it. 3 and half stars
Enjoyed the movie, but had no idea it was going to be in Swedish.
Vampire movie lovers will like this one - bit slow for anyone else
This film totally creeped me out. It's utterly brilliant and comes close to being film of 2009 for me. There are some truly frightening scenes amongst the angst and bullying. The moral of the story is clear though. Whether they are vampire or human, one must find the person who makes you feel good about yourself. It also helps that Stockholm is in the deep of winter and Oskar's home, a Swedish housing estate, has a million eerie corners.
I found this movie really enjoyable to watch
This was an extraordinary film. Not a great fan of vampire films but this one is so different and so well made. Lots of fascinating visual images. Best film I have seen in a long time.
This movie is best watched without any prior knowledge of it, as suggested by previous reviewers. The use of colour and light or lack of, adds to the haunting fantasy quality of the film. It is definately mesmerising and the acting is brilliant. Especially Oskar. You fall in love with him right away and understand completely his plight. It is somehow believable. I have wanted to see this film for a while, and was not disappointed.
this is one of the best films we have seen in a while. really well made finnish movies and if you can get past the subtitles (which honestly, you dont even notice coz the film is so captivating) you will really enjoy the film. try not to read any reviews or the blub as watching this film without knowing anything about it is what makes it so wonderful. great suspense film - dont watch if you are disturbed by blood and murder.. not that the scenes are very confronting or graffic.
Awful. Couldn't get past 45 minutes
Well crafted Swedish coming-of-age film with a horror-liscious twist !
Oskar is bullied and alone, but is saved by Eli, the girl with big beautiful eyes and more than just 1 dark secret ...
Captivating !
Despite the fact that I had problem with the disc and missed a small section of scene 4, I was totally mesmerised by this film. The mood was intense and eerie and the 2 child performers were very good, especially the girl. I've never cheered for a vampire to come out on top before. Brilliant.
This is a beautiful unusual film and very moving, the two young actors are brilliant, especially the actor who played Eli. I really enjoyed it and have ordered the novel.
Very good. Beautifully filmed and great acting by the two kids. Not much different in the way of the story except that it centred around children rather than adults (which made it quite sad). The end was strange and didn't really make any sense.
The film doesn't alienate the audience by trying to reinvent the vampire mythology, nor does it try to justify itself by boring us with another 2,000 year backstory (let's all give thanks to confident storytelling). Each element of the vampire mythology is introduced contextually, so you're never jarred out of the narrative.
Not one for hack and slash fans - great for lovers of a good story.
This is a film that had a lot of hype and liked it very much, i loved this film it was great to watch a good vampire film. Eli is great character and hre relationship with Oskar is something that made this film awesome i just love the editing of the film so well done in every way.
This was a pretty good film. A great story, excellent acting, a fresh original take on vampires and their struggle to live in the human world. The connection between Oskar and Eli is touching (in a weird way) more so than the characters of Twilight could ever be. Some shocking scenes add to the intensity and darkness of the film.
Fantastic film.Sadly leaves out some real horrific moments from the novel by John Advide Linqvist.
I read the book last year and it scared the hell out of me!!!
A mostly sweet gentle film... yes, even cute... with its short sharp bursts of vampiric violence!
Amazing. After seeing this I understand why it's been so widely raved about.
What a strange and intense movie. Not at all what I expected... Certainly no glamour. Its more about two young children, one with a terrible awful illness (vampirism) who both lead awfully depressing lives!
It was different, but not something I would watch again as it was very slow and broody. And sad!
The best of any of the vampire movies this movie will take you by the throat and shake you. you'll still be thinking about it days later. Sensational perfermances by all the children and the story is told with European class and style.
This film was captivating.
The love story aspect was totally emotional without being spoiled by soppy romance due to the youngsters' ages. Then there was some truly great moments of eerie horror.
The slower pace just adds to the eerie atmosphere and makes the subtitles almost unnoticable.
Eerie, horrific, emotional and beautiful.
Swedish flick with english subtitles. Nice effort from Sweden really. I wasn't sure about that one. I am not a big fan of vampires movies however I found that one quite interesting with a more drama approach. The visual fx are discreet and splendid. The actors are heaps good especially the kids. A nice surprise that I will recommend to foreign movies lovers.
Very interesting movie. Well acted and great storyline. Just a pity that it was subtitled. You miss half the movie cause you are trying to read the captions. Well worth the watch.
One of the films of the year. A bleak, original coming of age horror tale, with some strikingly memorable scenes and images. The relationship between the two young leads is gripping and the performances are excellent. One of the best and most satisfying climaxes in recent memory. Will appeal to fans of horror and the vampire sub genre, but anyone with an interest in high quality independent film should check it out.
See it NOW before the American remake ruins it for all.
Chilly prepubescent Swedish arthouse vampire movie -- not scary, rather gruesome and, for me, somehow sterile and uninvolving.
In my eyes....a perfect film - had no idea about the plot going into it and I can't remember the last time i've been so mesmerized by a film.
Don't want to go into too much detail as I found due to the fact that I knew nothing about it, made everything seem like such a surprise and/or shock.
Some that enjoy a slightly faster paced film have to endure a more steadily paced journey but it is well worth it. I can guarantee you that you have not seen a movie like this.
Better than any film that has been released in the last year.
Highly Recommended!
Great movie, the acting was exemplary.
It breaks my heart that this will be remade for Hollywood.
The bullying scenes might be hard for some people to watch, though. (I actually found them harder to take than the vampire scenes!)
