MATURE THEMES, SOME SCENES MAY FRIGHTEN YOUNG CHILDREN

Director: Brad Silberling
Actors: Meryl Streep, Billy Connolly, Jim Carrey, Jude Law, Catherine O'Hara, Luis Guzman, Timothy Spall, Jane Adams, Cedric The Entertainer, Jennifer Coolidge, Craig Ferguson, Jamie Harris, Liam Aiken, Deborah Theaker, Emily Browning, Hannah Lochner, Kara Hoffman, Shelby Hoffman, Rosemary Garris, Alan Heitz, Michael Earl Lane

The Baudelaire children are clever and resourceful but since their parents died in a fire, they are also the target of nefarious deeds because when 14 year-old Violet Baudelaire comes of age, she and her 12-year-old brother Klaus and infant, Sunny, will come into an inheritance.

But not if their guardian, the demented Count Olaf (Jim Carrey) can get his hands on it first.

Employing outrageous schemes and clever disguises, Olaf will try anything, including an attempt to have the Baudelaire kids runs over by a train. This unfortunate event lead to the children going to live with snake expert, Uncle Monty (Billy Connolly) but this also ends badly when a suspicious lab assistant named Stephano (Olaf in disguise) arrives.

Next stop for the kids is the fearful Aunt Josephine (Meryl Streep) but a pegged-leg sailor (guess who) puts an end to this and Olaf then hatches his most dastardly plot.

Based on the series of best-selling children’s books the first to knock the Harry Potter series out of The New York Times children’s best-seller list - Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events uses the first three books of the series The Bad Beginning, The Reptile Room and The Wide Window as its source material.

It promises to be miserably entertaining.

A likable, but somewhat irritating film. The gothic imagery is quite nice, but the plot holes and over the top acting by Jim Carrey really hurt it. A nice flick to watch, but certainly nothing I'd ever recommend buying.

Jim Carey can play any role well. He has a way of making you believe that he is evil and would do anything for money, even kill for it.

I really wanted to love this movie but unfortunately there is just not enough there to love. Jim Carey provides some good laughs. The set designs are beautiful and somewhat "Burton-esque" The children actors are solid and likeable. There is just a lack of cohesive compelling story. Essentially comprised of a handful of very distinct chapters. The movie suffers from these individual mini-stories lacking tension and drama and no real compelling overall story arc to tie it all together and hold the viewers interest. This is a shame as there is lot of potential and fertile ground to be explored here.

Not bad, but it misses a lot of the fun and spirit of the books. I think that combining the first 3 books into the one movie contributed to this, but the cast is fantastic and it's worth watching for their performances alone.

Adults be careful ordering this one, fine kids movie ( not under 8 years I suggest bit scary ) that has some appeal for adults. Different /clever film, great cinamatography, wonderful use of imagination & dark humour BUT most adults will be disappointed especially with the poor ending. I went by the high ratings which was a mistake for my taste.

This is quite a quirky movie. It seems to be targeted at young teenagers I'd say, but we (young at heart adults) quite enjoyed it. Its kind of like "Penelope Pitstop" meets "Rocky Horror Show" in some ways. There are quite a few good well known actors in it. Meryl Streep does a great job with her role as the paranoid ex-adventurer. Movie wraps up with a fairly simplistic resolution typical of some kids movies or cartoons. For younger children, this movie may cause nightmares. Be warned.

This brilliantly acted movie was enjoyable to watch and follow the well directed flick. Not having read the reviews I was amazed to find Jim Carrey's name in the credits and went back into the add-ons to view his excellent performance as the Count, just brilliant, and the other actors did a great job as well.Regards.

It really is more suitable for children, at least those familiar with the books. With an unsatisfying story it seems to rely on visual effect.

I read some mixed reviews before renting this, but having just watched it I logged straight back on to say "rubbish" to the nay-sayers. This is a great yarn, full of imagination, great scenery to help the story along, and strong performances from every single actor. People normally love or hate Jim Carrey, but to those who find him offensive, you really won't mind him as the bad guy. Billy Connolly plays a good minor role, but the kids are possibly the best of the lot (and that's saying something). Thoroughly recommended for kids 8 years and up, and there's plenty for parents to enjoy too.
