Deep in the forest of Tyto, nestled into the arms of the fir trees, the Barn Owls dwell. Soren is born into their tranquil kingdom. But evil lurks in the owl world, evil that threatens to shatter Tyto's peace and change the course of Soren's (Jim Sturgess) life forever. First eggs begin to mysteriously disappear from their nests, then Soren himself is captured by a party of strange yellow-eyed owls. He finds himself in a dark and forbidding canyon. It's called an orphanage, the St Aegolius Academy for Orphaned Owls, but Soren knows it's something far worse. Within his gizzard, the hope for escape remains alive, no matter how many rules, punishments, and sleepless days he faces at St Aggie's. He and his best friend, Gylfie, know the only way out of this place is up, so they will need to do something they have never done before - fly.

Apocalypse owl

Any kids’ film that features owl zombies, Hitler Youth-esque adversaries and an opening fifteen minutes that evokes Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Salo deserves credit for being ballsy. So allow me to offer Zack Snyder’s (tongue-twistingly-titled) Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole that credit. But should kids’ films be this … oppressive? There’s nothing wrong with making a spooky kids film (a’la Coraline) or even films for kiddies that deal with adult themes (a’la Up and Toy Story 3). But LOTG: TOOGH is so very dark and depressing, without the essential added ingredient of being overly interesting or exciting. I imagine younger viewers would be fairly weirded out by this movie, provided they weren’t already bored by it. Legend of the Guardians is based upon the first three books of Kat...

Legend of the Guardians is based upon the first three books of Kathryn Lasky’s 15-book Guardians of Ga’Hoole saga. It tells the story of a an idealistic young owl named Soren (Jim Sturgess) and his cynical brother Kludd (Ryan Kwanten), who are kidnapped from their tree and brought to the lair of the Pure Ones – an evil Owl Reich intent on wiping out the rest of the owl population. Although Soren remains intent on calling upon the help of the mythical Guardians of Ga’Hoole, Kludd embraces the dark side and offers to help enslave his own family for the good of the Pure Ones’ cause. In case you haven’t noticed, this ain’t exactly the light-and-fluffy Madagascar – although perhaps we shouldn’t have expected such from the director of 300.

Snyder’s first foray into animation has been handled by the Australian team at Animal Logic, who also produced Happy Feet. The animation is lush and the characterisations are rich. It’s also nice to hear a mostly-Australian voice cast, including Anthony LaPaglia, Geoffrey Rush and David Wenham (although, thanks to a number of unpronounceable/unmemorable character names such as Jutt, Gylfie, Allmoree and Elgantine, it’s difficult to remember who played what). Much like Happy Feet however, the tone of the film is wildly inconsistent. Happy Feet struggled (and eventually failed) to combine musical comedy with environmental point-making. Legend of the Guardians can’t quite figure out if it’s an animated metaphor for fascism intended for adults eyes only, or a Star Wars-esque hero’s journey for kiddies (complete with two comic sidekicks).

We should at least applaud Snyder for maintaining his visual style; there are enough slow-mo flourishes and wildly-epic fight sequences to remind audiences that this is indeed from a director who knows how to handle action. But the kinetic action scenes here are not as gripping as they were in Dawn of the Dead; the rousing speeches not as stirring as they were in 300; the political and pop-cultural allegories not as biting as they were in Watchmen. It’s as if he too feels bored by the material; as if Snyder wishes he could go all out, skip all the schmaltzy owl-on-owl cuddling and lesson-learning and make an animalistic, R-rated war film. But he can’t, so we as an audience are left with an unmemorable film that is too adult for kids, and too childish for adults.

2.5/5

I didn't think I'd enjoy this as much as I did. It's not perfect, some plot elements need tightening but the visuals are stunning and it draws you into the owls' world rapidly.

All I can say is that I hope the book is better than this... and that it wouldn't be difficult for the book to be better, for that matter....

Stunning visually. A great story with great characters. This was an accidental find, we had never heard of this movie prior to spotting it on Quickflix. A real pleasure to watch and experience. I will get this out again one day soon. Completely recommended for kids 4 or so upwards, and for the likes of me who is at least 10 times that age.

I have loved this genre of story since coming across the Ductton Woods book series years ago so always choose anything resembling the genre. Legend of the Gardians - The Owls of Ga'Hoole with an extensive cast of top line stars who voice the Barn Owls who live a life of tranquility in the peaceful Tyto forest until evil threatens to destroy their very existence. I Loved the graphics thoroughly enjoyed plot. 4 stars.

Beautiful scenery and entertaining voice acting (nice to hear some Aussie's in there) with very realistic animation and cute owl characters but it can't make up for the hard to follow plot and bad pacing...the film doesn't bother to explain what's going on. Still it's not too bad :)

Definately NOT a movie for small children as I had thought !! More for teens and adults as there is nothing pure and sweet about its content apart from some of the owls. The movie was good but contained violence and suffering - good vs evil content. In my opinion is a M15 movie not PG.

Want an absolute waste of time. Poor story progression, no heroic moments at all. Great animation quality but seriously lacking a reason to watch beyond the first 15 minutes.

Like some other animations [ Where the Wild things are] this is an attractive film visually, with a story-line that doesn't grip the imagination and labours the old good v. bad in an uninspiring way.

A good movie. Amazing animation (would love to have seen it in 3D) and agree with others it was great to hear those Aussie accents coming through. However I felt there was some draw backs (especially for the kids). Pace was to fast as if it was trying to cram too much in (I wasn't suprised to read afterwards that it was based on 3 novels) - trying to keep up with all the character names was difficult and you just felt like it was skimming over the surface of a deeper plot. Agree with others - a bit dark and confusing for the kids. So it kind of wasn't sophisticated enough for me as an adult and too consuing for the kids. But still worth a watch.

Mixed feelings on this one, great to hear Australian voices, bit weird in parts,at first i thought i wouldn't enjoy it but it got better and then weird again, but overall a very good film, though not recommended for the little kids can be a bit scary. The starwars type masks were a bit much,a bit overdone.
