An American race car driver (Steve McQueen) returns to competition a year after an accident leaves him badly injured. As he prepares to face his chief rival in the famous Le Mans race, he also begins a new romance with the wife of a driver who died in the same accident that nearly killed him.

Often considered the best racing film ever, Le Mans captures on film the personal intrigue and death-defying sportsmanship of the world's most famous and dangerous racing competition. Steve McQueen did most of his own driving on the 8.5 mile course, often exceeding 200 mph.

Semi-documentary starring Steve McQueen that manages to avoid the sensationalism of these types of things. Apparently shot without a proper script the film is like a Antonioni movie with the angst turned down a notch. One of the more curious sport movies.

There is no point making another movie about motor racing. Le Mans nails it so well that everyone else would be wasting their time. Minimal story and dialogue - in fact for the first half hour there's almost no dialogue at all. It's all about the cars and the racing. In fact, apart from McQueen, I didn't know any other actor in the film, so it's not built on "star power". Le Mans and the Senna documentary are all you need if you're into cars.
