An American race car driver (Steve McQueen) returns to competition a year after an accident leaves him badly injured. As he prepares to face his chief rival in the famous Le Mans race, he also begins a new romance with the wife of a driver who died in the same accident that nearly killed him.

Often considered the best racing film ever, Le Mans captures on film the personal intrigue and death-defying sportsmanship of the world's most famous and dangerous racing competition. Steve McQueen did most of his own driving on the 8.5 mile course, often exceeding 200 mph.

Terrific movie with great feel. The tension of the race itself was the focus and McQueen as always was outstanding. Another one of those 'they don't make them like this anymore' films.

Not quite for the petrol head. Some race enthusiasts won't like it - especially those who like over the top stuff like those "dumb" Fast and Furious C grade movies. For its age it is an excellent insight to what Le Mans was. The danger (minimal protection for drivers and spectators alike), the speed, the crowds, the fears, the glory and at the same time it portrays some of the vanity of it all.

Too boring for a person that isn`t interested in racing at all.

For the motorheads who remember this when it was one of the first on the big screen in panoramic view, this is a nostalgia trip. For drama, the story line is quite weak.
