Set in Virginia during the depression, and based on the true story of the Bondurants brothers - three rural bootleggers who defied the crooked authorities that wanted a piece of their profits. Jack (LaBeouf), the youngest, aspires to live in the suited-up ranks of Al Capone, Howard (Jason Clarke), the middle, is a reckless brute, and Forrest (Hardy), the eldest, heads the family operation against the changing times. As the brothers’ legacy grows, so do the risks.

John Hillcoat's Lawless is so low-key it's practically infrasonic. Utterly untroubled by any expectation to entertain - or even mildly engage - the audience, Hillcoat and screenwriter Nick Cave take a stroll through 1930s Virginia with the enthusiasm of beleaguered berry-pickers rather than raucous bootleggers. That is, until the remarkably silly conclusion in which Guy Pearce's villainous mobster Charley Rakes goes full-Cagney and takes the feature out in a too-late and out-of-place blaze of glory. His antagonist is about as imposing as Rob Sitch's King Javier from Kath and Kimderella, with a worse haircut to boot. The film concerns the legendary Bondurant brothers, who defied death at every turn while peddling booze during the Prohibition. Few true tales are of such a high-grade, and Hi...

Few true tales are of such a high-grade, and Hillcoat and Cave use it as the framework for what is ostensibly a pulpy gangster flick. Still, there's an ongoing sense of airs throughout. They fused existentialism and old-west thrills fantastically in The Proposition, yet here their balancing act has produced a largely dull final product. With Boardwalk Empire similarly inspiring yawns, you have to wonder why moonshiners are a mostly uninteresting bunch on screen. Alcohol: fun to drink, not so fun to watch.

The flat cinematography (by DOP Benoit Delhomme) and empty-vessel character work in the script is certainly responsible for the tedium too, though the actors that populate the frame mostly do their best. Tom Hardy is a comic delight as big brother Bondurant, Forrest; he speaks softly and beats-up brutally. However, if the authentic parlance of the times weren't already keeping avid listeners on their toes, Hardy's garbled dialogue will certainly leave most scratching their heads in confusion. For much of the movie, I wondered which nation would be submitting Lawless as their entry in the Best Foreign Language category at the Oscars.

Shia LaBeouf gives a career best turn as Jack, the youngest Bondurant and eventual grandfather of Mark, author of source book The Wettest County in the World. Desperate to emulate big bros Forrest and the perpetually drunk Howard (Jason Clarke), he strives to refine their production process, sell to big-time gangster Floyd Banner (Gary Oldman), and court the preacher's daughter, Bertha (Mia Wasikowska). All the while, the preening Charley Rakes - with the police under his thumb - viciously takes out anyone refusing to pay him for the pleasure of letting them carry on their illegal activities. The seemingly unkillable Forrest, who does not take kindly to these kinds of threats, and Jack, newly decked out in fine threads and with confidence up the wazoo, pledge to stand their ground.

Jessica Chastain plays a former Chicago dancer turned Bondurant barmaid, following up a phenomenal 2011 with perhaps the most underwritten role in her brief oeuvre. It's not her fault, of course, but the number of emotional cart-wheels her character is expected to make in so few scenes  is laughable. Maybe not as laughable as Pearce's eyebrow-less, hair-parted, glove-wearing Charley Rakes; a collection of affectations seemingly culled from Anton Chigurh, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Nosferatu. When you're performance makes Gary Oldman seem restrained by comparison, it's time to turn it down a notch.

2.5/5

Based on a true story. Enjoyed this cross between a western/gangster movie, 3 brothers against the world. Realistic filming of the 1920's prohibition hillbilly "moonshine" era, fascinating time in American history. Great cast quality acting especially by stellar Tom Hardy and the violent/evil Guy Pearce, quality direction. Sub plot of 2 romances involving a young love and two damaged older couples enhanced the storyline. Excellent screenplay and soundtrack by Nick Cave. Brutality & violence extreme sometimes but necessary to explain the era obviously R rated, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

thoroughly enjoyed this movie. the violent parts are pretty violent. there are 2 love stories happening that aren't over the top & are actually quite sweet, considering the roughness of the men. definitely worth a watch.

What a great look at this time in history. Very violent but we often research good movies and we found this was how it was and that the real life Forest suffered all we see in the movie and more! I agree with a comment below that the characters could have been developed more, but it stands up as a good story with interesting characters just the way it is. I felt that the lack of back story etc gave it a semi documentary feel and it was really Jack telling the story, from his memory, and when you do that you don't develop characters or go into great detail. A good story but definitely the MA 15

the period virginnia late 1920's is perfecly captured , the bad guy is played with panache by Guy peirce the acting and plot plausabile with nick cave understones the only criticism is that the whole story revolves around two sets so it hjas a sit com back drop feel about it but its a gritty drama with the grit captured by thee characters so authentically that you can almost feel thee grit grinding between your teeth .

This is one of those movies with enough development in the script and the characters it would have been something. It isn't a bad movie but it had potential to be even better. The movie just seemed to lack some depth in some areas, it had a decent direction though. And it was engaging to see the three brothers who are bootleggers during the prohibition work together.

Set in the prohibition era, corrupt cops and members of the mob from Chicago get wind of the 'moon shine' operations of some enterprising (and very tough) Virginians. Soon enough they arrive to muscle in on the spoils. Guy Pearce as the evil and cruel 'special' deputy puts in a stellar performance here. I am liking Shia LeBouf more and more. He plays the childlike and painfully bumbling little brother to a tee - trying to eke out a love life with a forbidden Amish girl amid the chaos. Tom Hardy is probably one of the most intense actors around today - very physically imposing in everything he does, but ominously quiet as he regards the goings on around him. I liked the slow burn of his relationship with Jessica Chastain.

Well-made with some nice characters, but ultimately it doesn't seem to add up to much.

A good movie, always good to see a tough guy vs tough guy clash. But the moral of the story is.....Don't get pissed, fall into a frozen lake and develop pneumonia

Good story set in prohibition USA with hillbillies making and selling moonshine liquor and fairly corrupt cops trying to catch them. Loved Guy Peace's overacting character.

I got this because of the NIck Cave connection (he wrote the screenplay). If you saw the Proposition or listened to his earlier music you'll know what to expect. Not for the squeemish. Tom Hardy was very good. Unlike some reviewers, I thought the usually excellent Guy Pearce was over the top.

What I like about this movie is how fine acting you've got in it. Tom Hardy and Guy Pearce are excellent. Overall a good movie with a few bits that I know were going to happen.

I really liked this movie. A lot of good performances particularly Hardy and Pearce; LaBouef's character is infuriating and childish almost to the point of ruining the movie but they definitely make up for it. Serious violence but well done instead of fake and kitschy.

Good but not great, mainly because it's hard to side with the brothers when most of their problems are due to La Boeuf's character's immaturity and delusional self-aggrandisement. Tom Hardy's performance is exceptional, he controls every scene he's in with hardly a spoken word. Gory & often graphically violent, the script is sexually coy. While based on "true" events, if you delete the mythologising, it's really just about a bunch of hillbillies making moonshine and the usual (although overly violent) corrupt on-the-take law enforcers. Music by Cave/Ellis excellent & atmospheric as always. Would give 3 1/2 stars if I could, but not 4.

This took ages to get going, almost to the point that I nearly turned it off, but stuck with it & glad I did. Very violent in parts but all in all a very watchable movie. Good to see quite a number of us Aussies in it as well.

Interesting film based on actual characters ,Tom Hardy's accent was ,for me ,a bit hard to understand initially. The film became more engaging as it progressed ,Guy Pearce was exceptional amongst a top class group of actors, good to see so many Australian actors in the one film . recommended

An impressive movie, visually interesting and with good music coming in at unexpected but appropriate times. The story is well told, but it took a good hour into it to be clear on what was going on, mainly because many of the characters spoke so unclearly. The exception was the Australians in the cast, despite their situation-appropriate American accents. Guy Pearce would never be picked for an Australian, yet in the Extras feature his natural speech is pure Aussie. Pity that Australian director John Hillcoat didn't use more Australians in the cast.

Really good actors - I enjoyed this one. Some of the scenes with Shia LaBeouf and Mia Wasikowska dragged on a bit and I could have done without them, but enjoyable nevertheless.
