Strong violence and coarse language

Director: F. Gary Gray
Actors: Gerard Butler, Jamie Foxx, Leslie Bibb, Regina Hall, Viola Davis, Colm Meaney, Gregory Itzin, Roger Bart

Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) is an upstanding family man whose wife and daughter are brutally murdered during a home invasion. When the killers are caught, Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx), a hotshot young Philadelphia prosecutor, is assigned to the case. Over his objections, Nick is forced by his boss to offer one of the suspects a light sentence in exchange for testifying against his accomplice. Fast forward ten years. The man who got away with murder is found dead and Clyde Shelton coolly admits his guilt. Then he issues a warning to Nick: Either fix the flawed justice system that failed his family, or key players in the trial will die. Soon Shelton follows through on his threats, orchestrating from his jail cell a string of spectacularly diabolical assassinations that can be neither predicted nor prevented. Philadelphia is gripped with fear as Shelton's high-profile targets are slain one after another and the authorities are powerless to halt his reign of terror. Only Nick can stop the killing, and to do so he must outwit this brilliant sociopath in a harrowing contest of wills in which even the smallest misstep means death. With his own family now in Shelton's cross-hairs, Nick finds himself in a desperate race against time facing a deadly adversary who seems always to be one step ahead.

The Butler abides

It’s hard not to like a film as ballsy as Law Abiding Citizen; so brazen that it actually revels in its ridiculousness. It’s exactly the kind of film the phrase “by-the-numbers” was invented for, but like the best genre films, it acknowledges its niche and goes all out to top its predecessors. The film is an entertaining throwback to those right-wing revenge films of the 1980s, in which the death sentence is considered just, and anyone screaming about “human rights” is just a dirty, filthy commie. As a human being with values (kinda), I can’t help but reject the film’s primary definition of justice. But, if Inglourious Basterds taught us anything, movies have a habit of turning the most peaceful cinemagoer into a bloodthirsty animal. And that’s part of the reason why we love ‘em. Retellin...

Retelling the mechanics of the plot would be as maddeningly convoluted as attempting to explain the first five seasons of Lost, so I’ll be mercifully brief. Gerard Butler plays Clyde Shelton, an engineer whose family is randomly targeted by two malicious home invaders. Shelton blacks out, and his wife and daughter are subsequently murdered. Although his attackers are eventually arrested, there isn’t enough evidence to see them both sentenced to life in prison. Prosecutor Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx), unwilling to ruin his impressive conviction rate, makes a deal that will see one of the attackers get the chair, and the other go free after 3 years in jail. Unsurprisingly, Shelton feels that justice has not been served.

Anyone who has ever seen a revenge film before (or for that matter, any film at all) can probably guess what happens next. Shelton takes it upon himself to dish out his own brand of justice against not only his freed attacker, but also the members of the legal system who did him wrong - specifically Nick Rice. Where Law Abiding Citizen diverts from other films of this ilk is in the execution. Literally. The way Shelton goes about exacting his justice is, interesting, to say the least. Completely implausible and laughably insane, yes. But still, interesting. Relax; you’ll receive no spoilers from me. After all, seeing Shelton brutally murder people (at one point with a piece of food) is the closest the film comes to being entertaining.

That being said - the film is pretty damn entertaining, no doubt the result of the sheer volume and brutality of the kill scenes. Director F. Gary Gray has made a solid career for himself with energetic, undemanding action films, and Law Abiding Citizen is no different. The action set-pieces are well orchestrated and the script (by Kurt Wimmer) is serviceable. Gray really shines however when given the opportunity to pit two charismatic actors against one another (see: Spacey vs. Jackson in The Negotiator). Now, Butler and Foxx may not exactly be on par with Spacey and Jackson, but they do well enough. Very little is asked of them, and they walk away from the project with their career and dignity intact. For two actors who have starred in cataclysmic clunkers like The Ugly Truth and Stealth, what more could they ask?

On a side note, Law Abiding Citizen features supporting performances from Colm Meaney, Viola Davis, Gregory Itzin, and a personal favourite actor of mine, Roger Bart. Although I have no particular desire to see this film recast with Bart and Itzin in the lead roles, I can’t help but feel that a better (different) picture could have been made with these actors at the head of the cast. But I guess a film doesn’t make money by boasting a shirtless Meaney on the poster.

3/5

Interesting story line but goes hopelessly over the top. Yes, there is a moral at the start of this story but it gets so twisted after not long that you realise it was just an excuse for a bit of violence, murder and general implausible hollywood mayhem. Most reviewers seem to think the murder of 8 innocent people is great payback for the initial injustice. Maybe that just about sums up the sick society we live in today.

There wasn't enough character development of Clyde before you were launched into the first action sequence of the film. Following the home invasion where Clyde's wife and child are killed we then proceed to the district attorney's office where Nick - the young brash lawyer grins while correcting his mentor that he actually has a 96% conviction rate. As a result of Nick's obsession with his conviction rate, one of the killers gets off lightly because he was willing to testify against his accomplice. There is no exploration of motive. Even though Clyde was an eye witness his testimony is considered useless because he blacked out at one stage. Presumably even though they didn't wear any gloves and wrestled with their victims by some magical coincidence no DNA was left behind at the crime scene. This is just the first 20 minutes of the movie. 10 years go by with apparently nothing happening even though Clyde has somehow attained some rather masterful skills in the area of eliminating other people. When the authorities nab Clyde and he is put into a holding cell in the hope of eliciting a confession. Instead of getting a dramatic discourse between Nick and Clyde it's rather boring negotiations around mattresses and steaks. There is a bit of suspense which is largely the only element that carries the film given we don't know enough about Clyde and Nick is just a douche. The end was lack lustre. Overall, the guys may like it. Not sure I'd recommend it.

Very dissapointing. Unevenly paced and boring in some bits, the trailer made it out to look much better than what it was. Coming off the superb performance in Ray, Jamie Foxx falls flat in this one and Gerard Butler reminded me of a watered down Tom Jane Punisher.

Had some promise, but too many holes and weak performances. Since when does the District Attorney do raids and detective work. And why does the helicopter turn up at the same time as the cars every time? Surely it gets there quicker. There are some violent moments and ingenious ways of blowing things up, but overall it's a disappointment.

What do you do when you an expert at killing people and people destroy everything you live for? An ultimate fantasy revenge tale in which you cheer on the "bad" guy. They all deserve to die, but how do you do it, and where do you stop? A good effort at setting the scenario, but I found the storyline only half plausible.

Loved it. I am a Gerard Butler fan since seeing Dracula 2000. After seeing so many horror and action films, it takes a lot to make me jump, and there is one scene involving the judge that certainly did it. Good acting, and chemistry between actors, but the ending seemed a little too convenient.

What can I say? Sheer brilliance! Like a champion chess player, you could neither anticipate his next move nor immediately understand the reasoning behind his current move. A little gruesome in some places, and although the 'bad' guy may have gone a little too far in the end, you can totally emphasize with him (and get REALLY frustrated with the legal system) . This movie definitely belongs among my top 10 all-time favorites (such as Shawshank, Green Mile just to name 2).

The males in the house enjoyed this movie, the females didn't. It's a story of frustration re law verses justice - it doesn't matter what the truth is, you have to be able to prove it in court. Sadly this film takes the road of violence, murder, torture and revenge to make the point. I'm still wondering who Chester is. I'd give it 2 1/2 stars but can't make the half a star.

This isn't my usual type of movie and this was confirmed in the first ten minutes BUT as the story progressed you get caught up in it and don't see the violence (though it is certainly central to the storyline) makes you stop and think about our justice system and if we should have faith in it at all. Our young adult Daughters and partners loved it, as did my Husband and I would recommend it as a good film but not always comfortable and not for the children.

Heard good things and it's nice to have high expectations met. Would have been a perfect score if not for the mainstream American movie idea of having an ending that satisfies the focus groups. Up till then was loving the modern day Guy Fawkes irony aiming to destroy a flawed republic.
