There will no doubt come a day when audiences tire of mockumentaries, fakeumentaries, docufantasias and perhaps even mockufaketasias. There are surely people in the world who are already sick of them. The author of this review is not one of these people. Daniel Stamm’s The Last Exorcism is another of those “found footage” films; one that claims to contain a true document of real-life events. Much like Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project before it, the film suggests that we are witnessing horrifying, supernatural events for reals. Of course, we know it’s all a fabrication, but suspending belief and buying into the illusion is half the fun (as is watching the filmmakers cheekily use recognisable documentary tropes to send shivers down our spines). The Last Exorcism may not offer much new to the recently-saturated genre (and it may be remembered as the film that squeezed the final drops of juice from the orange), but it’s one hell of a good time. The viewer is placed squarely in the position of anonymous documentarian in this charmingly comic, ably performed, surprisingly sincere and often chilling first-person funhouse of a film.

You would think Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) is a religious man (what with him being a Reverend and all), but you’d be wrong. Trained in the art of “exorcisms”, the Louisiana native is tired of flimflamming vulnerable folks into thinking that he was excising demons from their person. After hearing of an autistic child accidentally killed during an exorcism-gone-wrong (when do they go right?), Marcus recruits a documentary crew to help him expose the traditional rite as a scam. Producer/director Iris (Iris Bahr) and cameraman Daniel (Adam Grimes) join Marcus on his final mission: he has been summoned to the Sweetzer family farmhouse, where the devout Louis (Louis Herthum) believes his 16-year-old daughter Nell (Ashley Bell) is possessed by a demon. Marcus pulls out all the smoke and mirrors to trick the Sweetzers into thinking he is actually drawing an evil being from the naïve, terrified Nell (hidden iPod speakers play demonic howls – crafty!). Nell seems cured (at least of her belief that she’s possessed), and Marcus and crew leave the Sweetzers to live their lives happily ever after. But Nell isn’t cured, and The Not-Quite-An-Exorcist is drawn back to the farmhouse to save Nell and her family from … well, let’s not jump to any conclusions.

Although the cameraman is ostensibly called ‘Daniel’, he’s really a personality-free placeholder for us, the viewer. As the lights go out in the Sweetzers’ farmhouse, and the cameraman cautiously stalks the hallways in the dark, it feels as if we are strapped into a carnival ghost train, or perhaps in a first-person video game shooter (without the luxury of having a weapon). I suppose this novelty only adds to the film’s disposability, but it’s hard to think of a movie’s legacy and longevity when you’re busy giggling and jumping-in-your-seat and just generally enjoying yourself more than any adult man should in a cinema.

Although directed by German Stamm (who has previously worked on “found footage” movies), the real creative force behind the film seems to be screenwriting team Huck Botko and Andrew Hurland. The duo has spent much of the last decade working on comic documentaries, short films, and most recently, the sex-comedy/mockumentary The Virginity Hit. Although they would seem an odd fit for a project titled The Last Exorcism, they imbue the screenplay with honesty and honest laughs. The movie’s first forty-five minutes acts as a legitimately witty satire of religious fundamentalists and the now-totally-lame concept of exorcisms (“the spirit of Christ compels you … yawn”). When the stakes are raised in the final act, the audience has been utterly disarmed. And instead of winking at us and promising that it will be all right, they trust that we want to feel terror. If your “found footage” quotient was exhausted by last month’s Paranormal Activity 2, then I can’t say that The Lost Exorcism will offer much more than you haven’t already seen. But it’s hard not to appreciate a $1.8 million thriller that exemplifies more humour, heart, and - most importantly – horror, than Hollywood’s biggest of blockbusters. No lie.

4/5

A great movie that has a hard time finding its audience; it's not gore and violence are probably to subtle to satisfy most of the current batch of horror fans, but the over the top promotional campaign focusing exclusively on the supernatural and violent parts would convince most people looking for a thoughtful adult horror movie that it was the next cab off the rank in throw away scare flicks. While it is a genuine horror movie it does take its time to get to the scares, making you first get to know and like the charlatan exorcist with a rapidly growing conscious and the doco team who are recording his final job to expose the tricks of the trade. Once we meet the possessed girl and her family everything that happens gives you a growing sense of dread and unease, so when one of the big scares start you have been wound up to such an extent that (for me at least) you do jump out of your chair. Every one of the actors in this is superb, but Ashlee bell as Nell and Caleb Jones are out of this world as Nell and her creepy intelligent and possibly insane brother, and I'll probably see everything Patrick Fabian has ever been in now too.

It's alright. The actors are good, but needs a few more scares rather than have one big shock ending. Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity are spookier.

A horrible Blair witch rip off crossed with the exorcism. Whereas The excorism and the exorcism of Emily Rose had a story of trumpet over evil this film is basicly made by blair witch fanboys that didnt understand the lure and the acting is dreaful, the direction slow and boring and nearly nothing exciting happens apart from a few bone breaks. The ending is as stupid as they come and comes across as a rip off of rosemary's baby without the class. Def one to aviod didnt like it sorry.

Blair witch style movie and some of the 'possessed' scenes are chilling. Not really harmed by the odd ending.

I really like the faux documentary format. It pulled you in and almost made you forget you were watching a horror movie. The end was a tad far fetched, but still somehow satisfying. I didn't expect it, and that's saying a lot in these days of formula movies.

Terrible, the trailer shows the 'best' parts of the film and the rest of it lacks tension.

Not what I expected. The wikipedia story synopsis is more scary. The only probably creepy bit is in the special features with the feature about 'real life' possession on tape and the warning that listening to the voices may 'open you to demonic forces'. Otherwise not worth it really.

Awesome movie, very cleverly done, not your usual horror flick, done similar to how Blair Witch was done (doco style) - I really enjoyed it.

Not scary at all. The Excorcist was scarier than this and that's an old movie. Plus, I dislike movies that don't keep you informed of the plot. I put some of the pieces together and I'm an avid movie buff, but it was just a bumbling mess. If that was scary then I must just be really tough (and I'm not).

This is actually a really interesting and inspired movie.... that is, until the last ten minutes. Watch and see what you think - you'll be left scratching your head and scouring the internet for answers.

Wow! This was not what I expected, although I wasn't surprised by the ending. This is a much more sinister Blair Witch Project X The Exorcist style of movie. It has plenty of twists and turns, I really enjoyed the storyline and even was scared in a few parts. It's a bit slow to start, but keep watching because it soons starts to get awful creepy and you know that something bigger is just around the corner. Highly recommend, I think if you have seen the exorcist the beginning, and enjoyed it, you'll love this movie.

The set up and the first 40 minutes of this movie are excellent and really got me hooked. But it was downhill from there, quite confusing with lots of handheld camera and running through corridors and woods. The acting was exceptional and the documentary style was quite convicing. Excellent device to not show the cameraman. Pretty good but could have been a classic. Watch the extras especially the audition piences for the leading girl. Extraordinary.

Quite disappointing in the end. Doesn't seem to make sense a lot of the time such as the point for why he does what he does in the first exorcism. The ending was just too easy and reminded me of something out of Days of Our Lives when Marlena got possessed by the devil!
