I haven't seem the original so i can't compare with the director's cut, but despite it's exorbitant length (3 and a half hours long) it's incredibly engrossing throughout. such a fascinating story with great direction and beautiful cinematography.

having just visited China for a holiday, we loved watching this movie and re-visiting the Forbidden Palace. What an amazing, powerful story. great acting.
