Mild fantasy violence

Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Actors: Noah Ringer, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel, Cliff Curtis, Seychelle Gabriel, Shaun Toub, Nicola Peltz

The last airbender takes place in a fantasy world, home to humans, fantastic animals, and supernatural spirits. Human civilisation is divided into three pre-industrialised nations, the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, and the Air Nomads, and one industrialised nation, the Fire Nation, capable of manufacturing various kinds of machines. Within each nation, an order of men and women called "Benders" have the ability to manipulate their native element. These Bending arts combine a certain style of martial arts and elemental mysticism. The Bending types are Waterbending, Earthbending, Firebending, and Airbending. In each generation, one person is capable of Bending all four elements; this is the Avatar, the spirit of the planet manifested in human form. When the Avatar dies, he or she is reincarnated into an unborn baby native in the next nation in the Avatar Cycle, which parallels the seasons: winter for water, spring for earth, summer for fire, and autumn for air. While legend holds that the Avatar must master the elements in order, starting with their native element, this can sometimes be compromised when the situation requires it. Learning to bend the element opposite one's native element is extremely difficult because opposing Bending arts are based on opposing fighting styles and doctrines.

The six stages of grieving Shyamalan
by Simon Miraudo, 17/09/2010 10:27:00 AM

Stage One: Denial. To be an M. Night Shyamalan fan is to be an M. Night Shyamalan apologist. I understand why the blogger generation has turned him into their whipping boy – he has made a series of terrible films. That’s fair enough. But when did it become fashionable to hate his early features? I thought we were all in agreement that The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs were great? It seems the online community has pulled the rug out from under me, making me look like the kid who rocked up to Free Dress Day at school still wearing my uniform. There has been a retroactive dismissal of his cinematic output that puzzles me; many are now scrambling to claim that they always knew M. Night was a hack, as if he were the demon spawn of Brett Ratner and Uwe Boll. I certainly can’t say I predicted the depths Shyamalan would reach later in his career, and I still consider those aforementioned three films to be phenomenal. Even in his worst pictures, I occasionally see a glimpse of his innate directorial talent and think, “Perhaps this is the moment where he will enchant me once again.”

Stage Two: Guilt. The very fact that I am prefacing a review of his new film – The Last Airbender - with an acknowledgment of his public perception is sad. Will I always have to say before discussing his latest, “He’s a good filmmaker; he just makes the occasional bad movie!”? Francis Ford Coppola made Jack, but people aren’t grabbing their pitchforks and storming his winery in the Napa Valley. Let it be said that The Last Airbender is not a good film. Not at all. It betrays its much-loved source material – theNickelodeon show Avatar: The Last Airbender – with (less than) one dimensional characters, an almost incomprehensible dilution of the narrative, and laughably bad action sequences that look like dance routines in which the dancers are one step behind the beat. But I take no joy in tearing into Shyamalan’s failure. Perhaps a little part of me is still desperately clinging on to the filmmaker I once revered. Perhaps I just feel bad for the guy.

Stage Three: Anger. But wait a second; I’m not the one collecting million dollar checks to produce entertainment. He is, and therefore, he needs to claim responsibility for this travesty. It’s all well and good if Shyamalan wants to make misguided vanity projects (Lady in the Water) and hilariously off-the-reservation horror films (The Happening). I can even forgive The Village, which is two-thirds of an impressively made film (I’ll chalk the mind-numbing ending up to poor judgment). But Avatar: The Last Airbender is loved by millions; how can he let all those fans of the show down? How could the creative minds behind the program trust the franchise to a filmmaker who seems to have forgotten how to tell a story? I’m not entirely familiar with the series, but I enjoy big budget action adventures just like anyone else, and Shyamalan has failed to deliver that too. Why should I feel bad, when he is the one that keeps disappointing everyone? He keeps disappointing me, and I keep apologising for him! Well, not any more…

Stage Four: Depression. What really saddens me – apart from the disintegration of a once exciting talent, and the distressing racebending of the cast of characters – is that it seems as if a good film could be made out of The Last Airbender’s tale. But this is not that film. The picture takes place in a universe divided up into the Water, Fire, Earth and Air nations, each of which are being terrorised by Fire Lord Ozai (Cliff Curtis) and his son Zuko (Dev Patel) because [unexplained]. Our hero is Aang (Noah Ringer), a young boy with the power to “bend” all four elements, which means [unexplained]. He is expected to unite the nations by [unexplained][unexplained] with the help of Katara (Nicola Peltz) and Sokka (Jackson Rathbone). Together, they [something] [something] [fish god] [something] until the final battle! Also, the ending alludes to a sequel. Attempting to recount this plot was difficult and disheartening.

Stage Five: The Upward Turn. The Last Airbender is a mess at its very core. Shyamalan does not know what story he is telling, and he fails to convey it either aurally or visually. His characters are empty vessels; they exist to explain what we should instead be shown. No one is funny; no one is smart; no one is interesting; no one is anything. The action sequences are slow, tedious and silly. It’s a children’s film, but I can’t imagine a child not clawing their chairs in boredom. BUT, there is the odd moment that seems to evoke Shyamalan’s finer films. In certain moments of emotional intensity (and only when his actors aren’t speaking), the camera is framed in such a way that it elicits chills. Credit must also go to cinematographer Andrew Leslie and composer James Newton Howard. Well, it’s not much credit and they’ll have to split it three ways, but its credit nonetheless.

Stage Six: Acceptance … and Hope. The Last Airbender is awful, but for what it’s worth, it’s not the worst film of 2010. I personally think The Expendables, Eclipse, Sex and the City 2, Clash of the Titans, The Wolfman and Tooth Fairy are all far greater travesties. The film has been hit with allegations of racisim in its selective casting, and although they’re significant (and not totally unfounded) accusations, the film is not nearly as offensive as The Expendables (which makes men seem like idiots), Eclipse (which makes women seem like idiots) and Sex and the City 2 (which makes men AND women seem like idiots, AND is racist – the trifecta!). While The Last Airbender proves that Shyamalan has forgotten how to tell a story, it offers enough hope to suggest he might one day be able to recapture his talents. He had to hit rock bottom sometime. Onwards and upwards?

Great visual effects. The music production for this film was also decently selected. The story tried to cover too much of the animation series and ended up segmented and confusing. The main characters were poorly acted and an inaccurate portrayal of the original "culture" shown in the animation.

It was pretty great in all areas, except grossly lacking in the acting department. The girls did a decent job but the guys, especially the Aang actor have a lot of brushing up to do, they failed to convince me any of the movie was real. It felt like the really struggling to convince themselves of any of it and as a result it was painful to watch sometimes. However the story and specials effects managed to salvage it somewhat, only 3 stars for me though. The acting was a huge letdown.

Great story line and good effects but just too much crammed into this movie. They try to cover every aspect and detail of the series in such a short period and it feels like it becomes too much. Still enjoyable to watch.

I really loved this movie. I had been an avid watcher of the cartoons & was unsure whether this would compare. The storyline & special effects were excellent. A really fun movie & very child friendly.

I'd never watched the Avatar cartoons or anything, so I was unsure of what to expect, beside what the intro said. I thought the special effects were great. It' is kid friendly and allows them to escape and enter a world of spiritual magic and fantasy. I enjoyed it.

Top movie if you want to escape to another world for a time. Great special FX and action but not bloodthirsty. A treat for all ages that can be watched by the whole family including the grandparents. A couple familiar actors in it like the young Indian/British National guy from "Slum Dog Millionair" & the British show, "Skins". There is also another actor who is possibly a New Zealander and has appeared in movies from NZ, Australia and the USA. In the latter he has played a detective in a Sci-Fi mini series about the world's population losing some minutes of consciousness at the same time.

Really enjoyed this. I read all the comments about it afterwards (while looking for when the next one was called, which hasn't been released because of all the whining I think) ) and it appears going in with any preconceived ideas would have ruined it. Loved the visuals and thought the young actors and actresses were superb. Want to see the next one ! I have never seen the animated series so never had any expectations and from that viewpoint, it was compeltely entertaining. Pity about all the animated purisits being so insulting about it.

Terrible! But then, what do we honestly expect from M. Night Shyamalan? Worst acting I've ever seen - and given my guilty pleasure is C-grade vampire flicks, that's saying something. According to the IMDB page, the kid who played Aang went to acting school before doing this movie - I'm guessing he flunked... Dialogue was stiff, formal and awkward. Spent most of the movie sarcastically repeating the worst lines to my friend, amid tears of laughter. Two stars - but only because the special effects were decent. They really did a great job with the water-bending in particular.

Not as bad as everyone made out. It could have been a lot better if the mysticism was made a bit less confusing and if the actors weren't terrible but on the whole it's ok viewing.

Could have been great but it was BAD. Badly acted, badly directed, badly written. The effects are good but everything else drags it down. Leads straight into a sequel, lets hope another director picks it up.

Fans of the animation series, do not watch this. I expected it to be dissappointing and found that it was even more so. You can see in the out-takes why these actors were all chosen. They all display the characteristics of the role they are to portray. But due to extremely poor directing by Shamalan, they all appear on screen as if they cant act. Yuei (the princess of the northern water tribe) is the only one who shows she can act. And guess what happens to her...! Special effects were great, but the heart from the series could not be found here. I swear the misspronunciations of names and such, really got on my nerves.

Really enjoyed this film which surprised me considering the major negativity I'd read about it beforehand. It was a bit of a struggle to follow the plot at times and not sure they got all the casting right but great idea and some fantastic individual scenes. Good fun but could have been brilliant in the right hands. 3.5
