Oscar winners Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts reunite for a dramatic comedy about how the hard knocks from today's recession inspire one everyday guy to undergo a personal reinvention: Larry Crowne. Until he was downsized, affable, amiable Larry Crowne (Hanks) was a superstar team leader at the big-box company where he's worked since his time in the Navy. Underwater on his mortgage and unclear on what to do with his suddenly free days, Larry heads to his local college to start over. There he becomes part of a colorful community of outcasts, also-rans and the overlooked all trying to find a better future for themselves, often moving around town in a herd of scooters. In his public-speaking class, Larry develops an unexpected crush on his teacher Mercedes Tainot (Roberts), who has lost as much passion for teaching as she has for her husband. The simple guy who has every reason to think his life has stalled will come to learn an unexpected lesson: when you think everything worth having has passed you by, you just might discover your reason to live.

As an actor, Tom Hanks has often been compared with Jimmy Stewart. As a director, he seems to take his cues from frequent Stewart collaborator, Frank Capra. Larry Crowne, Hanks’ second effort behind the camera, makes It’s a Wonderful Life look like Enter the Void. It’s a cute movie that never meant to hurt no one, and that’s the best thing I can say about it. Spending time with Larry Crowne, both the film and the title character, is like spending time with an elderly relative who is intent on spinning yarns that are only mildly amusing and intermittently funny: not exactly a horrible way to pass 99 minutes, but still a bit of a chore. Such is the likability of Hanks and the adorable naiveté of his and Nia Vardalos’ script that I practically feel evil for not falling head over heels in love...

Such is the likability of Hanks and the adorable naiveté of his and Nia Vardalos’ script that I practically feel evil for not falling head over heels in love with the super-sweet, Norman Rockwell-esque universe depicted here. In fact, even if you are evil – kitten-stomping, baby-eating, Kardashian-abiding evil – you’d still probably feel a bit guilty for not enjoying it all that much. The film is perfectly pleasant, and all the characters seem like really nice human beings, but ultimately I found myself humouring it rather than it humouring me.

The film begins with former Navy-lifer and recent divorcee Larry Crowne (Hanks) loving life as a valued employee at the U-Mart superstore. Well, he thinks he’s valued, until they fire him for not having a college education (times are tough, and they have to cull their staff from the bottom up). After taking the advice of his wacky neighbours Lamar (Cedric the Entertainer) and B’Ella (Taraji P. Henson), Larry decides to head back to school, enrolling in community college to study Public Speaking, Economics and … Fitting In (awww). He ditches his SUV for a scooter, and is invited to join the local scooter-gang by his effervescent classmate Talia (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), because this is a world where there are such things as scooter gangs and gorgeous 25-year-old women who latch onto 50-something guys they meet in parking lots. Larry’s public speaking teacher, Mercedes Tainot (Julia Roberts), is unimpressed by his friendship with the young lady. But frankly, she’s just annoyed that her career is going nowhere, her students don’t care about her classes and that her blogger husband (Bryan Cranston) spends his day looking up erotica from the 1980s. Perhaps the puppy-dog charm of a mature-aged student will pull her out of her doldrums?

The similarities between Larry Crowne and the television show Community should be apparent. The differences, however, are equally obvious. Although both take place in a community college and feature classrooms of lovable misfits, Community is bold, experimental, and blisteringly funny. Larry Crowne is none of those things. It does feel like a TV show though, so feel free to add a third tick to the comparison tally. Larry Crowne is just a bit lame; it coasts on the charm of its stars in lieu of plot, jokes, emotion and narrative thrust. The laughs are few and far between, often courtesy of George Takei as economics professor Dr. Matsutani. I’ve been waiting years for Hanks to return to the world of comedy, particularly following his overlong stay in the interminable realm of Dan Brown adaptations. Larry Crowne proves he’s still a charming comic lead, but that’s just not enough to excuse everything else the film is lacking.

A nice little movie written by and starring Tom Hanks. Probably more for over 40s I would think. All the cast do a great job. Watch out for 'Fez' from That 70's Show. The writer of My Bit Fat Greek Wedding is co-writer and provides a voice to the sat-nav in the movie. Julia Roberts plays a cranky, disappointed teacher in an unsatisfied relationship.

What is the point of this sugary, twee, banal waste of time. Big names not performing, lacking storyline....some characters go no where. Harmless but pointless. Avoid.

Tom Hanks = greatness! excellent acting. good story. very on trend topic of bad economy / redundancy etc. Julia Roberts look a bit tired. she remind me of all the other roles she's done already. nothing too surprising from her. overall pretty good though.

Quite enjoyable - I got quite a few laughs out of it. George Takei was great as the economics professor. The beginning where Larry looses his job is not an uncommon thing in the States I believe which is very sad. Just wouldn't happen in Australia.

This is a C grade chick flick. So slow, so predictable, almost boring. Extremely basic characters that did not develop, minimal romance and story interest. Man get fired, goes back to school, he & teacher fall in love.Such a waste of talent on a very poor script & direction by Hanks. He should stick to acting. Not recommended by this baby boomer.

Very enjoyable, feel-good film that's well worth seeing. I liked it very much. I kind of think there's a message in there too - that people in middle age (like moi!) can work on getting some of that pragmatic optimism for themselves. I had some laugh-out-loud moments too, so this romantic comedy is better than many others I've seen in quite a while.

For some reason I was expecting a bit more substance from this film - maybe because of the lead actors - not sure but overall was just a 'nice', 'fluffy' movie - not bad but certainly not brilliant.

This was a very disappointing movie. I expected so much more from a movie with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. This movie lacked interest, and just came across as bland. The romance was virtually non-existent, the ending seemed rushed with no closure, and in general is was just a totally lacklustre movie. A shame really as I'd been looking forward to seeing it.

I was suprised how much I enjoyed this movie. For me, it was an old fashioned "feel good" movie, that seems to be lacking these days. Loved the cast, they seemed to bounce off each other, which made for an easy flow with the cast. DVD stopped half way thru, but other then that, it was a great movie.

Much better than I expected. There was good chemistry amongst the cast. I was surprise to read one professional critics comments that the movie “doesn't have is a reason for existing”. I would have thought, given that it reflects the economic experiences of many in America today, it has an obvious reason to exist. Albeit, it is a rosier depiction would normally occur. Worth a watch.

Had a lot of bad apprehensions about it and I was surprised to realize how old Tom Hanks looks in this. Anyway the big surprise was that I was actually enjoying it. Not a big fan of Julia Roberts and frankly she always acts the same type of roles however the other actors and especially Tom Hanks are doing a real good job to make us forget how far this story is from the reality of life. A nice feeling good comedy with agreeable characters.

Larry crowne is a breath of fresh air to the comedy genre. Just when you thought it was about to recycle some trite theme from movies past (example the reluctant students) the story turned to introduce a delightful new twist. Enjoy!

I heard a story that a guy met Tom Hanks at a petro station and the guy told him he didnt like the movie so Tom refunded him the money. I think Tom Hanks should pay anyone who sat through to the end of the movie. It was weak, lame and cringeworthy to watch. I cannot believe two great actors - Tom Hanks & Julia Roberts who probably dont even need to work, even considered doing this movie - it was terrible.

We are huge Tom Hanks fans so knew this was going to be good regardless. . . certainly not one of his 'classic' or 'memorable' films (like Forrest Gump or Da Vinci Code) but still worthy of a high recommendation for good all round feel good enjoyment. An easy film to watch, at the end we felt we had spent a couple of hours of good movie viewing. Reading this back it sounds a little bland but that really isn't the case, it was a great movie, so please give it a go.
