A strung-out sociopath sentenced to death for shooting a cop is instead turned into an assassin by the French government in this exciting, yet thoughtful slant on the Pygmalion story. Trained in martial arts and coached by her mentor, she is slowly transformed into a cultured, sophisticated feminine killer. But when she re-enters the real world and falls in love, she finds it impossible to reconcile her new feelings with her profession.

Another example of the French "cinema du look". An action thriller but of interest to other types of audiences too. Music on synthesizers by E. Serra complements very well the visuals/moods and anticipates the action scenes to come... Story line slightly hard to believe, but maintains one's interest till the very end. The ending is unsuspected. Overall at least 3 stars, perhaps even four!...My only complaint is perhaps too much shooting and valiance, car chases/escapes, etc. But other scenes are nice and memorable, like for instance "a lesson in smiling", almost philosophical in it's meaning...Whether it will appeal to feminists, I do not know, but definitely it shows a very different type of a female heroin of an action thriller! Contains an extra feature "the making of Nikita", including very interesting interviews with actors and the composer. I recommend this movie overall.
