Disaster sequences, disturbing images and brief coarse language

Director: Alex Proyas
Actors: Ben Mendelsohn, Nicolas Cage, Rose Byrne, Alan Hopgood, Chandler Canterbury, Nadia Townsend

A group of students examines the contents of a time capsule created 50 years earlier, and a mysterious girl's cryptic message ends up in the hands of young Caleb Myles (Chandler Canterbury). But it is Caleb's father, professor Ted Myles (Nicolas Cage), who makes the startling discovery that the encoded message predicts with pinpoint accuracy the dates, death tolls and co-ordinates of every major disaster of the past 50 years. As Ted further unravels the document's secrets, he realises it foretells three additional events - the last of which hints at destruction on a global scale and seems to somehow involve Ted and his son.

Knowing IS better
by Simon Miraudo,

Alex Proyas' Knowing is a far braver and more intelligent film than many will give it credit for. It deals with that eternal, unanswerable question – do we really have free will or is the universe pre-determined? Can our actions alter the events of the future, or have all our decisions already been planned by some higher power? It’s a question that creates implications of gargantuan religious and scientific proportions. And no, the new Nicolas Cage film doesn’t answer it. However, Knowing is one of the most entertaining, and dare I say it, thought provoking sci-fi films of recent years. Cage stars as astrophysicist John Koestler, a widower who has made peace with the seeming randomness of the universe. His son Caleb (Chandler Canterbury) is too young to have any definitive cosmic beliefs,...

His son Caleb (Chandler Canterbury) is too young to have any definitive cosmic beliefs, but is willing to accept that anything is possible. At the 50th anniversary of Caleb’s school, a time capsule is lifted from the ground, and the contents are distributed amongst the students. Caleb is given a sheet of paper filled with numbers, furiously handwritten in no apparent order by a young girl fifty years earlier. John spots a pattern – the date of a specific disaster, followed by the number of people killed, and finally the exact coordinates of the event.

He obsessively checks every number, and every major catastrophe of the past fifty years is accounted for. His scientist friend (Ben Mendelsohn) reminds him that numerological patterns can be found in almost anything. It's a good point, although in this film, it falls on deaf ears. With three disasters supposedly left to occur, Koestler finds himself questioning his ability to change the inevitable, and also his place in the universe. Wait, just three disasters left? Just as the film's tagline asks, what happens when the numbers run out?

While Cage hasn’t been the most reliable actor in recent years, he has always been a likable one. The acting in the film is uniformly bad, but Cage manages to provide a captivating anchor in a story that is much larger than any one man. Rose Byrne is tremendously unbelievable as the granddaughter of the girl who originally wrote the numbers, and the child actors are unfortunately, pretty unconvincing. What keeps Knowing from falling into Wicker Man territory is the phenomenal direction by Alex Proyas. Although he doesn’t quite have a handle on the actors, his visual eye is extraordinary. Knowing features what is possibly the best ever plane crash in film history and Proyas captures it all in one 3-minute take on hand held camera. There are two other major set-pieces that are equally jaw-dropping. A film that only cost $50 million to make should not look this amazing.

The storytelling is also masterful, with breadcrumbs of the shocking finale littered throughout the film. Knowing manages to be intriguing, and constantly surprising – which is probably as ironic a film about predestination can be. Therefore it’s such a shame that the film’s ending will probably send most viewers out of the cinema in either tears of laughter, or furrowed brows of incredulity. Neither are deserved. The film is a puzzle, and not necessarily a solvable one. Why should every movie have to be completely understood by the time the credits roll? Part of the fun is talking it out in the car ride home; attempting to wrap your head around the film’s ideas, and where that sits amongst your own beliefs. I’m three days into my analysis of Knowing, and I’m still figuring it out. And I love that I haven’t quite yet.

Yes, I am fully aware that Knowing has been completely drubbed by critics around the world. It currently holds a depressing 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, and I have a feeling that a lot of that hate is based on the film’s ending. Despite what the trailer may imply, Knowing is a science-fiction film, and easily one of the most provocative made of late. If you’re not one to have an open-mind, any sci-fi can seem ridiculous. A film that can stimulate my mind to the point that I cannot think of anything else is worthy of praise. The acting may be a problem, but some films are so special they deserve a pass here and there. Knowing is about faith; the belief that one day the mysteries of the universe will be explained to us, and the knowledge that anything is possible.

4.5/5

Had forgotten I'd already seen this movie on TV, but I enjoyed watching it again, Nicholas Cage as always portrayed the concerned Dad but he was a bit paranoid towards the end not wanting to let go.

Interesting premise and beginning. Once the aliens enter, it's your usual cliches with round spaceships, lots of light etc. Quite unconvincing acting from both Cage and Byrne and very bad American accent from Mendelsohn. The film seems to go downhill with a very silly ending. Human beings have really stuffed up this planet, and continue to do so knowingly. There is no reason why we won't just repeat the same old patterns somewhere else.

Definitely Scientology propaganda. The beginning was great with the time capsule and the numbers hooking you in. It only goes down hill after that. Fantasticly terrible acting by Nicholas Cage, running around like a robot trying to fix everything himself and in the end all the adults have to die in the disaster whilst the kids are taken by alien (angels) to a new planet to start over. I want 2 hours of my life back. Absolute rubbish.

This is a top quality Sci-fi flick! No sex was thrown in to attract extra non sci-fi viewers. My only qualm is that it toys with biblical interpretations, but that's just me because I have a thorough knowledge of Christian theology and the 9 orders of angels in their 3 rankings plus the Book of Revelation.

Entertaining but silly. Plenty of dramatic special effects (although Cage reaching into an obviously raging CGI fire without reaction was unintentionally funny). It makes little sense if you actually look for a logical plot. Doesn't help that it can't decide between a mystical or a scientific explanation. The ending made me roll my eyes. Still, I'd watch it again if I was stuck at home on a rainy afternoon and it was on free-to-air.

I think you have to be in the mood. It is a heavy, convoluted screenplay, Cage can be a bit over the top, but if you can ignore that, I found it amazing and entertaining . The direction is fantastic, if sometimes frustrating, it may be one of those movies that people need a day or two to sit on and then realize that it was good and they did actually enjoy it. I did !!

What a movie.............interesting and what an ending, definately did not see that coming. This movie was interesting, complicated, enticing, dramatic and sad. Everything you could ever want in a movie this one had. It made you want to keep watching to the end and what a twist, definately something you didn't expect to happen, happened. This movie was great and one that i would watch and most likely buy. It kept me entertained with action, comedy, little scary at times where i didn't want to watch but had to look through my fingers in case i missed something important. Drama and family connection and courage. I loved this movie and people who liked movies like independance day and and ending of the world will love this.

I can't belive anyone was willing to spend money on this movie. Nick Cage rushes around practicing dumb expressions under the worst hair day while whispering voices threaten the world. He demonstrates some really stupid actions by a supposedly responsible college teacher and single father. No one would be that stupid - run towards a crashed and burning plane, head into the city when you expect a disaster to happen there! Did he think he could stop it? And he left his son behind! Really think about this movie - if aliens did want to warn us about impending doom why would they whisper it to two creeped out kids in coded messages? If they were here to abduct the children why not just take them? What do the black stones mean? Just a gimic to encourage mystery and tension by the director - it didn't work, they were not sinister in the slightest. The only scarey part was when one of the 'friendly' aliens roared at Nick - nearly blew his hair off which would have improved the movie, nothing else did.

From looking at the reviews here, you either like this film or hate it. I fall in the latter category. It surprised me to see a reviewer write that this move makes you think... Clearly not a lot else to think about if this bit of garnage gets your brain ticking over. The credits will show you that Nic Cage had a chef, two assistants and a driver. Probably could've replaced the chef and driver with an acting coach, because this is as bad as he gets. The only redeeming feature of this movie was trying to spot Melbourne and Victorian landmarks.

Nic Cage - now sporting John Lithgow's haircut - delivers a performance as electrifying as a wet sponge. Any scene he appears in with the boy, he seems to be honestly wondering when they started making people so small. There is absolutely no chemistry between him and his onscreen son. Then there's the scene in the museum during which he appears to need to use the bathroom for the entire duration. But these are only things I noticed because the plot was so ludicrous as to barely rate any notice.

Up to the halfway point I thought this a decent movie, only to be let down when it became apparent the scriptwriters had attended the same writing courses as M Night Shayamalan and the scribes of Indiana Jones 4 whereby they start well, then go on a crazy acid trip past the two-hour mark. The only 'Knowing' you need is that this is another let down. Nic Cage, what have you done? You need another Raising Arizona.

The starting idea was good and the first hour was alright. Hard to say when Cage is well acting or tries acting without really being capable of doing it seriously. Anyway I felt like a real let down during the 2nd hour. The movie turns to a typical Hollywood garbage full of coincidences. Obviously everything is happening around Cage and the end is a complete disaster. You won't miss much by not watching this.
