Vastly underrated, clever and challenging film that encapsulates a period. The frustrated teacher, the predatory mod, the childlike artist and the Northern girl just of the bus come together to create a unique slice of mid-sixties London. Some of Lester's best work, the images and phrases remain with the viewer.
Inspired by the French new wave???s turning upside down traditional narrative and camera technique, the English soon got in on the act. Mixed with swinging sixties sensibilities and class critique, the English came up with its own trendy but often vacuous films, such as this one. Very much of its time, it now comes across rather shambolic and tedious.
Like the previous reviewer, I didn't finish it either. Best bits were the women's clothes.
i shall date myself and reveal that i saw this movie at the cinema when it first came out, which is why i wanted to see it again. it is an evocative portrayal which sure reminded me of those days, and what it was like to share digs in london in b
