Love this film, the script is razor sharp with some of the funniest lines of any film and Downey Jr and Val Kilmer are brilliant in it.

Without a doubt 5 stars. This film DELIBERATELY goes out of its way to break nearly all the 'rules' of film making. I think anyone who rated this movie down really failed to grasp that notion. The super quick interplay of ideas and theatre-sport style of the dialogue was refreshing. This is a great fresh fun clever with RDJ and VK overacting beautifully. "American Indian Joe Pesci" is still a game I play years after seeing this film! :D It's funny as hell. It has some solid dramatic moments, but essentially it’s a rollercoaster of 'play'. '.

I watched this movie and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. There are references to all the old pulp crime fiction and the the sleazy LA partly portrayed in Entourage. There is an in and out pause and rewind storytelling format to the movie that I didn't mind but it could have been better integrated. The film is confusing throughout rushes here and there but Robert Downey Jr plays Robert Downey Jr (Sherlock) and pulls it together in the final quarter in a great sequence. Sadly Val Kilmer and the woman could have been better. I went looking for a making of bonus to try and understand it better but there wasn't one although there is a narration soundtrack by major actors...but I couldn't watch it again.

Only the ridiculously convoluted plot spoiled this one. Otherwise this is a very enjoyable, very cleverly written and very funny thriller. Downey Jnr. Val Kilmer and, the underrated Michele Monaghan are all superb. The scene with Abraham Lincoln and Elvis cracked me up!!!Could watch this one again.

Expected so much more. Especially from Robert Downey Jr. I put it in the "everybody lost the plot" category because the film certainly didn't have one! Such a contrived piece of work from all, masquerading as art, genre this and genre that. The most interesting aspect of this film is to read the all the member reviews and see how many people really loved it, and how many people thought it was rubbish and a waste of time!

Really enjoyed this movie. Downey is great as the lead and Val Kilmer is excellent in his role. The story line is good and the movie pacing is perfect. You never know quite what to expect as the story progresses. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie even though I had my reservations before I watched it.

What a shocker! I can't believe that so many people have given this a good review!? Me and my partner both throught it lacked any substance. It was a complete drag and just down right ridiculous. Honestly, how could anyone possibly have enjoyed this rubbish - and I'm generally not that fussy when it comes to watching movies but two thumbs down when it comes to this one for sure!

Took awhile to get into this movie-as the style is different. Didn't care about any of the characters, and found the movie style irritating and disruptive. Good that it was trying to be different- Just didn't work for me.

I thought this movie was witty and entertaining - could have been formulaic but managed some funny twists and unexpected turns, usually at the expense of Robert Downey Jnrs. character.

What a fabulous movie! It rips up all the conventions of film making and turns them on their head. Robert Downey Jr narrates the tale in a hyper speedy stream of conscious vomit of dialogue that has you constantly rewinding the movie to hear what he said. Slightly annoying but this is Downey's style. Val Kilmer makes a wicked gay detective and Michelle Monahan once again surprises with her quirky slightly daffy turn as a wannabe actress. Love it!

This send-up comedy detective story is the flip(pant) side to “more clever than words”. Here the machine gun speed dialogue is too street smart and cocky for its own good. The result was extreme difficulty in trying to make sense of a confusing plot, though an inkling of it emerges by the end. Sometime story narrator Robert Downey Jr. as nice-small-time-thief-guy Harry Lockhart turned would-be actor and inadvertent efficient killer does work his way into potentially funny situations with gay private-eye Perry van Shrike (Val Kilmer). However, their silly smartass banter became tedious and self indulgent despite the perfectly timed deliveries; outlandish action sequences were often more humourous. It might have more appeal to a hip-hop crowd.

While it took a while to draw me in, by the end I didn't want it to finish. Downey Jr. was excellent, and his wit and humour far outweighed that of Kilmer. Some excellent plot twists and turns created the enthralment to keep me pinned to the couch until the end. Proves that Robert Downey Jr. is just getting better with age, and makes him compulsory viewing, especially with Ironman sequels in the works...

I love a good black comedy, and this is very black and very funny. R.D.Jr. and the rest of the cast are great, plenty of plot twists, and laugh-out-loud funny. A little noir and a little odd couple buddy the film never takes itself too seriously. Really enjoyed it.

I am a big fan of Robert Downey and he doesn't disappoint in this quirky film. A pleasant surprise, as I am not a fan , is Val kilmer. His character was brilliant in this. It isn't your normal run of the mill movie and for that reason I really enjoyed it, loved it actually. It has a typical who done it story line but it is the way it is told that makes this movie great!

A different spin on the buddy movie and it works pretty well. Robert Downey Jr and Val Kimer complement each other well and their by-play (no pun intended) helps move the complicated story line along. Michelle Monaghan is gorgeous.

An irreverent modern take on the whole Hollywood detective genre, particularly the old 1940's movies, complete with voiceover narration. Funny, and quirky, this movie doesn't take itself seriously, using cheeky rollbacks and direct narration to the viewer - including "Well, okay, are you getting it now? Do you know who the killer is?" Both Downey and Kilmer obviously have fun with their roles as well. A laugh-aloud experience, reminiscent of Pulp Fiction.

This a new take of a 1940's style decetive who done it but with a very modern outtake on it. If you love this style of movie then you are in for a real treat. Val Kilmer puts in a fantastic performance as the private decetive who takes on the task of teaching Robert Downing Jr's character. While the material at times can be strong, it still very humourous. Well acted, great plot and definately worthy of a sequel.

This film was a lot better than I thought it would be, given the title. From the brilliant opening credits to the "happy" ending, it was a classy piece of film noir -- albeit in colour. While it was a nicely realised hard-edged thriller (with the usual twists and turns), it was somewhat softened by some quirky humour and a romance that ultimately ensured good entertainment value.

An interesting movie in that it's weird! The narration skips bits, goes back forwards. More like someone thinking out alloud. The whole scenario is 6 derees of seperation type stuff, coincidence after coincidence, or is it? MY wife saw it at the pictures but said it was great a second time as she picked up heaps she had missed on the first go

Really good. Twisting and turning plot is possible because Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jnr are in such good form - it is actually a shame the Downey has suffered so many drug problems and the like so we don't see him in many films, he is great in this.
